Parameter Design and Power Flow Control of Energy Recovery Power Accumulator Battery Pack Testing System

  • This paper proposes a special power circuit topology and its corresponding control strategy for an energy recovery power accumulator battery pack testing system (PABPTS), which is particularly used in electric vehicles. Firstly, operation principle and related parameter design for the system are illustrated. Secondly, control strategy of the composite power converter for PABPTS is analyzed in detail. The improved scheme includes a high accuracy charge and discharge current closed loop. active power reference for the grid-side inverter is provided by the result of multiplication between battery pack terminal voltage and test current. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme could not only satisfy the requirements for PABPTS with wide-range current test, but also could recover the discharging energy to the power grid with high efficiency.

  • Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) are developed to be operated with two kinds of power source (Diesel Engine and Electric Motor with Rechargeable High Voltage Battery Pack). HEVs for military vehicle require high reliability to provide stable powers under serious environment such as vibration and shock. To ensure normal operation of battery pack under serious environment such as vibration and shock, the high voltage battery pack needs to have appropriate dynamic characteristics. This paper presents a design procedure for high voltage battery pack with such characteristics. An isolator design is proposed to reduce vibration and shock. Associated random vibration and shock response of the high voltage battery pack are simulated under conditions suggested by MIL specifications. Its dynamic characteristics and vibration and shock responses are validated with experiments.

전기자동차 레인지익스텐더를 위한 초소형 가스터빈 파워팩의 전기 부하 및 동력전달 기어비에 따른 성능 실험 (Measurement of Micro Gas Turbine Power Pack Performance for Electric Vehicle Range Extenders Under Various Electrical Loads and Gear Ratios)

  • 전기자동차 레인지 익스텐더는 소형 엔진으로 구동되는 발전기 시스템(초소형 파워팩)으로서 자동차 운행 중 지속 충전을 통하여 운전 거리 및 시간을 연장한다. 기존 가솔린 엔진 파워팩은 복잡한 구조와 낮은 에너지 밀도로 인하여 고출력 소형 시스템 구현에 한계가 있다. 반면, 가스터빈 파워팩은 출력밀도가 매우 높고 고속화를 통해 시스템의 소형화가 가능하다. 본 연구에서는 전기자동차 레인지 익스텐더로 활용하기 위하여 초소형 가스터빈, 자동차용 알터네이터, 배터리를 사용한 초소형 가스터빈 파워팩 실험장치를 개발하고, 무부하 및 부하 조건에서 동력전달 기어비 및 알터네이터 전기부하에 따른 운전 특성 및 발전 성능을 측정하였다. 실험 결과, 부하 변화에 따른 발전 성능의 변화는 없었으며, 코어터빈 속도가 150 krpm 일 때 최대 전기적 출력은 0.8 kW 로 측정되었다. 또한, 동력축의 3:1 감속을 통해 전기적 출력은 1.5 kW 로 88% 증가하였다. 따라서, 본 연구의 초소형 가스터빈 파워팩은 배터리 부하변동에 대해 안정적인 전력생산이 가능하며, 전기자동차용 레인지 익스텐더로 적용가능함을 확인하였다.

  • Given that lithium-ion batteries are expected to be used as power sources for electric and hybrid vehicles, thermodynamics experimentation and prediction based on experimental data were performed. Thermal, electrochemical, and electrochemical/electrical-thermal models were used for accurate battery modeling. Various applications of different battery packs were demonstrated, and thermal analysis was performed using the same experimental conditions for square and rectangular battery packs. Accurate thermal analysis for a single cell should be prioritized to determine the thermal behavior of the battery pack. The energy balance equation, which contains heat generation and heat transfer factors, defines the thermal behavior of the battery pack. By comparing battery packs of different shapes tested under the same condition, this study revealed that the rectangular battery pack is superior to the square battery pack in terms of the maximum temperature of inner cells and temperature variation between cells.

  • A large number of lithium-ion batteries are arranged in series and parallel in battery packs, such as those in electric vehicles or energy storage systems. As battery packs age, their output power and energy density drop because of voltage deviation, constant and non-uniform exposure to abnormal environments, and increased contact resistance between batteries; this reduces application system efficiency. Despite the balancing circuit and logic of the battery management system, the output of the battery pack is concentrated in the most severely aged unit cell and the output is frequently limited by power derating. In this study, we implemented a cell imbalance detection algorithm and selected parameters to detect a sudden decrease in battery pack output. In addition, we propose a method to increase efficiency by applying the measured testing values considering the operating conditions and abnormal conditions of the battery pack.

다중선형회귀모델 기반 고출력 직렬 배터리 팩의 전압 불균형 추정 (Multiple linear regression model-based voltage imbalance estimation for high-power series battery pack)

  • 본 논문에서는 18650 원통형 NCA 리튬이온 배터리로 구성된 고출력 직렬 배터리로 다양한 C-rate의 전기적 특성을 테스트한다. 테스트를 통해 추출한 14S1P 배터리 팩의 방전 용량 데이터와 4S1P 배터리 팩의 EV cycle 데이터를 통해 C-rate의 변화에 따른 전기적 특성을 분석한다. 분석을 통해 얻은 데이터를 기반으로 C-rate에 따른 방전용량 실험의 셀 간 전압 편차와 EV cycle 실험의 셀 간 전압 편차를 다중선형회귀 모델로 추정하여 선형적인 특징을 가진 데이터와 비선형적인 특징을 가진 데이터에 대한 각각의 추정성능을 검증한다. 모델의 추정성능을 검증하기 위해 추정 데이터와 실제 데이터의 RMSE를 구해 알고리즘의 정확성을 평가한다. 논문의 결과는 14S1P 배터리 팩의 방전 용량의 셀 간 전압 불균형과 4S1P 배터리 팩의 EV cycle의 셀 간 전압 불균형 중 선형적인 데이터인 방전 용량의 셀 간 불균형 데이터의 추정 성능이 더 뛰어난 것을 검증하는데 기여한다.

재사용 ESS를 위한 리튬 배터리 덴드라이트 보호 알고리즘 제안 (Proposal Protection Algorithm of Dendritic Lithium for Battery Second Use ESS)

  • The lithium-ion battery pack of an electric vehicle (EV) deserves to be considered for an alternative use within smart-grid infrastructure. Despite the long automotive service life, EV batteries retain over 70~80% of their initial capacity. These battery packs must be managed for their reliability and safety. Therefore, a battery management system (BMS) should use specific algorithms to measure and estimate the status of the battery. Most importantly, the BMS of a grid-connected energy storage system (ESS) must ensure that the lithium-ion battery does not catch fire or explode due to an internal short from uncontrolled dendrite growth. In other words, the BMS of a lithium-ion battery pack should be capable of detecting the battery's status based on the electrochemical reaction continuously until the end of the battery's lifespan. In this paper, we propose a new protection algorithm for a dendritic lithium battery. The proposed algorithm has applied a parameter from battery pack aging results and has control power managing.

Utility AC Frequency to High Frequency ACPower Conversion Circuit with Soft Switching PWM Strategy

  • In this paper, a DC smoothing filterless soft switching pulse modulated high frequency AC power conversion circuit connected to utility. frequency AC power source is proposed for consumer induction heating hot water producer, steamer and super heated steamer. The operating principle of DC link filterless utility frequency AC-high frequency AC (HF AC) power conversion circuit defined as high frequency cycloinverter is described, which can operate under a principle of ZVS/AVT and power regulation based on alternate asymmetrical PWM in synchronization with the utility frequency single phase AC positive or negative half wave voltage. The dual mode modulation control scheme based on high frequency PWM and commercial frequency AC voltage PDM for the proposed high frequency cycloinverter are discussed to enlarge its soft switching commutation operating range for wide HF AC power regulation. This high frequency cycloinverter is developed for high frequency IH Dual Packs Heater (DPH) type boiler used in consumer and industrial fluid pipeline systems. Based on the experiment and simulation results, this high frequency cycloinverter is proved to be suitable for the consumer use IH-DPH boiler and hot water producers. The cycloinverter power regulation and power conversion efficiency characteristics are evaluated and discussed.
