Tumor-treating fields therapy involves placing pads onto the patient's skin to create a low- intensity (1 - 3 V/cm), intermediate frequency (100 - 300 kHz), alternating electric field to treat cancerous tumors. This new treatment modality has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the USA to treat patients with both newly diagnosed and recurrent glioblastoma. To deliver the prescribed electric field intensity to the tumor while minimizing exposure of organs at risk, we developed an optimization method for the electric field distribution in the body and compared the electric field distribution in the body before and after application of this optimization algorithm. To determine the electric field distribution in the body before optimization, we applied the same electric potential to all pairs of electric pads located on opposite sides of models. We subsequently adjusted the intensity of the electric field to each pair of pads to optimize the electric field distribution in the body, resulting in the prescribed electric field intensity to the tumor while minimizing electric fields at organs at risk. A comparison of the electric field distribution within the body before and after optimization showed that application of the optimization algorithm delivered a therapeutically effective electric field to the tumor while minimizing the average and the maximum field strength applied to organs at risk. Use of this optimization algorithm when planning tumor-treating fields therapy should maintain or increase the intensity of the electric field applied to the tumor while minimizing the intensity of the electric field applied to organs at risk. This would enhance the effectiveness of tumor-treating fields therapy while reducing dangerous side effects.

Corona discharges form at the surface of a transmission line conductor when the electric-field intensity on the conductor surface exceeds the breakdown strength of air. In order to decrease the electric-field intensity on the conductor surface, a new 6 conductor bundle has been studied. This bundle, hybrid conductor bundle, consists of using a larger subconductor at the bottom two conductor positions in the 6-conductor bundles of each phase of the line. The electric field on these two larger subconductors is reduced which in turn reduces the corona noise. It is shown that this is a better solution for decreasing the electric-field intensity than ether the conventional bundle or the asymmetric bundle proposed by EPRI.
The effect of electric fields on flame speed has been investigated experimentally by observing propagating premixed flames in a tube for methane/air mixtures. The flame speeds were measured in both the normal and micro gravity conditions to substantiate the measurements. The results show that the flame speeds were enhanced by both the AC and DC electric fields, as the flame approached to the high voltage electrode located on the one end of the tube. The enhancement of flame speed was proportional to the square root of the electric field intensity, defined as the voltage applied divided by the distance of flame from the high voltage electrode, when the electric field intensity is sufficiently large. When the electric field intensity was low, there existed critical intensities, below which the electric fields did not influence the flame speed. This critical electric field intensity correlated well with the flame speed.

The crystallization behavior of amorphous silicon is affected by direction and intensity of electric field in FALC(Field-Aided Lateral Crystallization). Electric field was calculated in a simplified model using conductivity data of Mo, a-Si, $SiO_2$and boundary conditions for electric potential at the electrodes. The magnitude of electric field intensity in each corner of cathode was much larger than that in the center of patterns, and the electric field direction was 50~60 degree outside to cathode. And electric field intensity at a relatively small pattern was larger than that of a large pattern.

The effect of DC electric fields on the flame extinction was investigated experimentally in counterflow configurations for the methane/oxygen/nitrogen diffusion flame. The electric fields was applied by connecting the high voltage and ground terminals to the upper and lower burners, respectively. In case of having electric fields, several modes of flame extinction was observed according to the electric field intensity and strain rate defined by the exit velocity. To visualize and characterize the flame structure and intensity, planar LIF technique was adopted for OH radicals. Consequently, several length scales, including the flame width, thickness, and height from the burner tip, were introduced to explain the various flame behaviors and to characterize the flame extinctions. It was found that the variation of flame width and the chemical reaction are strongly related to a critical electric field intensity, thus the various modes of diffusion flame extinction could be observed due to the electric fields.

a crack with electrically impermeable surfaces in an electrostrictive material subjected to uniform electric loading is analysed. A strip yield zone model is employed to investigate the effect of electric yielding on stress intensity factor. complete forms of electric fields and elastic fields for the crack are derived by using complex function theory. /the stress intensity factors are obtained based on the strip yield zone model.

The problem of electromagnetic field through apertures in cavity has been theoretically and experimentally investigated. The electric field intensity has been theoretically evaluated by the method of moments. Experiment results are some different from numerical simulation about the magnitude of electric field intensity, But The form of electric field intensity distributions In cavity is similar to numerical simulation. Reactance-loaded method for reducing electric field penetration In cavity by external sources is used In this paper.
I performed a semi-analytical numerical analysis of the effects of core size and electric field intensity on the light emission wavelength of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs). The analysis used a quantum mechanical approach; I solved the Schrödinger equation describing the electron-hole pairs of QDs. The numerical solutions are described using a basis set composed of the eigenstates of the Schrödinger equation; they are thus equivalent to analytical solutions. This semi-analytical numerical method made it simple and reliable to evaluate the dependency of QD characteristics on the QD core size and electric field intensity. As the QD core diameter changed from 9.9 to 2.5 nm, the light emission wavelength of CdSe core-only QDs varied from 262.9 to 643.8 nm, and that of CdSe/ZnS core/shell QDs from 279.9 to 697.2 nm. On application of an electric field of 8 × 105 V/cm, the emission wavelengths of green-emitting CdSe and CdSe/ZnS QDs increased by 7.7 and 3.8 nm, respectively. This semi-analytical numerical analysis will aid the choice of QD size and material, and promote the development of improved QD light-emitting devices.

Sound pressure and particle velocity are the most essential quantities prescribing a sound field; they correspond to voltage and electric current respectively, in electric system. As electric power is the product of voltage and electric current, sound intensity is the product of sound pressure and particle velocity and it means the acoustic power passing through a unit area in a sound field. Although the definition of sound intensity is very simple as mentioned above, the method of measuring this quantity has not been realized for a long time, because it has been very difficult to measure the particle velocity simultaneously with the sound pressure. Owing to the recent development of such technologies as transducer production and digital signal processing, it has finally been realized. According to the sound intensity(SI) method, the sound power flow in an arbitrary sound field can be directly measured as a vector quantify. In this paper, the principle of the SI method is briefly explained at first and some examples of its application made in the author's laboratory are introduced.
Effect of transverse electric field on crack kinking in ferroelectric ceramics subjected to purely electric loading is investigated. It is shown that the shape and size of the domain switching zone depends strongly on the direction of the applied electric field as well as the ratio of the transverse electric field to the coercive electric field. Under small-scale conditions, mode I and II stress intensity factors induced by ferroelectric domain switching are numerically obtained. The crack kinking in ferroelectrics is also discussed.
