  • The bipolar plate is a major component of the PEM fuel cell stack, which takes a large portion of stack cost. In this study, as alternative materials for bipolar plate of PEM fuel cells, graphite composites were fabricated by compression molding. Graphite particles mixed with epoxy resin were used as the main substance to provide electric conductivity. To achieve desired electric properties, specimens made with different mixing ratio, processing pressure and temperature were tested. To increase mechanical strength, one or two layer of woven carbon fabric were added to the original graphite and resin composite. Thus, the composite material is consisted of the three phases: graphite particles, epoxy resin, and carbon fabric. By increasing mixing ratio, fabricated pressure and process temperature, electric conductivity was improved. The results of tensile test showed that the tensile strength of two-phase graphite composite was about 5MPa, and that of three-phase composite was increased to 54MPa.

  • We consider the problem of determining conductivity of the medium from the measurements of the electric potential on the boundary and the corresponding current flux across the boundary. We give a formula for reconstructing the conductivity and its normal derivative at the point of the boundary simultaneously from the localized Diichlet to Neumann map around that point.

  • The optogalvanic signals were measured using hollow cathode discharge tube with argon as buffer gas at change of discharge currents. A change of ionization rate due to electron collision causes an increase or decrease of the electric conductivity. This change in electric conductivity generates the optogalvanic signal. We conclude that optogalvanic signal has close relation with the lowest metastable atoms density at low current.

  • The objectives of this paper are to measure the concentration of $H_2$O/LiBr solution by measuring the electrical conductivity and to study the effect of the solution temperature and the concentration on the electrical conductivity of the solution. The solution temperature ranges $20^{\circ},\;40^{\circ},\;and\; 60^{\circ}$ for a fixed concentration during the experiment. The valid ranges of the concentration are two regions, low concentration region (1~20% of LiBr) and high concentration region (55~66% of LiBr). The results show that the conductivity of the solution increases linearly with increasing the solution temperature while it increases without creasing the concentration lower than about 35% of LiBr and decreases with increasing the concentration higher than 35%. This paper proposes experimental correlations for the concentration as functions of the solution temperature and the concentration with error band of $\pm7$% for the low concentration region and $\pm1$% for the high concentration region, respectively. The experimental correlation can be practically used in the on-line measurement without any sampling of solution from the closed system.

  • In this study, the volume resistivity of XLPE materials with various voltage ratings was discussed. The volume resistivity of the developed XPLE nanocomposite was measured, and the conductivity mechanism of the material was also examined. The ASTM D 257 and IEC 60093 measurement methods were used for these tests. The equipment was designed to measure up to a temperature of $200^{\circ}C$, and the electrode structure was designed to maintain the thickness and temperature uniformity of the sample. The conductivity of the sample decreased with temperature, and the samples reached saturation within 500s, after which the conductivity leveled off. By analyzing the current density and the electric field, we can well explain the electric conductivity behavior of our sample with the Schottky mechanism.

  • This study attempts to show how the geomagnetic indices, AU, AL and Dst, respond to the interplanetary parameters, more specifically, the solar wind electric field VBz during southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) period. The AU index does not seem to respond linearly to the variation of southward IMF. Only a noticeable correlation between the AU and VBz is shown during summer, when the ionospheric conductivity associated with the solar EUV radiation is high. It is highly likely that the effect of electric field on the eastward electrojet intensification is only noticeable whenever the ionospheric conductivity is significantly enhanced during summer. Thus, one should be very cautious in employing the AU as a convection index during other seasons. The AL index shows a significantly high correlation with VBz regardless of season. Considering that the auroral electrojet is the combined result of electric field and ionospheric conductivity, the intensification of these two quantities seems to occur concurrently during southward IMF period. This suggests that the AL index behaves more like a convection index rather than a substorm index as far as hourly mean AL index is concerned. Contrary to the AU index, the AL index does not register the maximum value during summer for a given level of VBz. It has something to do with the findings that discrete auroras are suppressed in sunlight hemisphere (Newell et al. 1996), thus reducing the ionospheric conductivity during summer. As expected, the Dst index tends to become more negative as VBz gets intensified. However, the Dst index (nT) is less than or equal to 15VBz(mV/m) + 50(Bz < 0). It indicates that VBz determines the lower limit of the storm size, while another factor(s), possibly substorm, seems to get further involved in intensifying storms. Although it has not been examined in this study, the duration of southward IMF would also be a factor to be considered in determining the size of a storm.

  • Micro-stereolithography is a newly proposed technology as a means that can fabricate a 3D micro structure of free form. It makes a 3D micro-structure by dividing the shape into many slices of relevant thickness along horizontal surfaces, hardening each layer of slice with a focused laser beam, and stacking them up to a desired shape. However, we do not anticipate the electric conductivity of the final product at the existing micro-stereolithography. The reason is that this technology uses polymer to make the product. Thus the new suspension which was mixed conventional photopolymer with metal powder was developed in this study. The developed suspensions were based on SL5180 which is commercialized resin and IMS03 that is made in our laboratory. And Triton X-100 was added at the suspension for getting the scattering effect and stabilizing effect. The layer recoating device was developed to be flat the mixed high viscosity suspension. A 3D micro structure was manufactured by using recoating system and micro-stereolithography system. The fabricated product was sintered to get the electric conductivity. After sintering, a pure copper product was made. In this study, new process was developed by making metal micro structure having an electric conductivity. This technology broadened the realm of the micro-stereolithography technology. And it will be applied to make the 3D micro structure of free form which has a high hardness and an electric conductivity in the near future.

  • We examined temporal variations in and relationships among groundwater level, groundwater temperature, and electric conductivity, and estimated groundwater recharge at Jeju Island. The time lag and regulation time of groundwater level data revealed that monitoring well in Ansung (JM-AS) has the highest auto-correlation. The cross-correlations for electric conductivity-water level, precipitation-water level, and air temperature-water temperature revealed that monitoring well in Seogwi-2 (JR-SG2) (electric conductivity-water level), monitoring well in Hamo (JD-HM) (precipitation-water level), and monitoring well in Wonjongjang-2 (JT-WJJ2) (air temperature-water temperature) had the highest cross-correlations. The average groundwater recharge ratio was 39.61%, and the average groundwater recharge amount was 1,153,490,407 $m^3/yr$, which is consistent with the results of previous studies.

  • In this paper, we have numerically investigated two-dimensional dielectrophoretic (DEP) motions of a single particle suspended freely in a viscous fluid, interacting with a nearby nonconducting planar wall, under an externally applied uniform direct-current electric field. Particularly, we solve the Maxwell equation with a large sharp jump in the electric conductivity at the particle-fluid interface and then integrate the Maxwell stress tensor to compute the DEP force on the particle. Results show that, under an electric field parallel to the wall, one particle is always repelled to move far away from the wall and the motion depends strongly on the particle-wall spacing and the particle conductivity. The motion strength vanishes when the particle is as conductive as the fluid and increases as the conductivity deviates further from that of the fluid.
