  • The purpose of this study was to make a pants pattern suitable for women 70 to 85 years of age, then analyze that- pattern's shape, size, appearance, fit, allowance and air gap. Participants made the pattern using 3D simulation program DC Suite version 5.1. The results suggest a design method suitable for the lower-body shapes of elderly women. In external appearance, the A-type earned the highest evaluation in all items except the allowance of the back waist and back hip. The L type earned the highest evaluation in the allowance of back waist and hips. The A-type's, back waist appeared set at an angle that did not match the body shape of an old-old aged woman in the center-back-line setting. Therefore, the pattern method of A-type combined with L-type's method of center back, produces an excellent pants pattern. Evaluation of the air gaps among patterns revealed that; the A-type showed the largest air gap in waist and hip circumference and the smallest air gap in thigh circumference. The waists, abdomen, and hip circumferences of older women often become larger while their legs become slimmer. This study accounted for those factors in determining a pattern suitable for the lower-body shape of old-old aged women. However, participants only analyzed four patterns and compared them with women 70 to 85, years of age. Therefore, it is necessary to develop industrial patterns applicable to a wide age group.

  • Recently, we found and analyzed vitamin $B_{12}$ in some Korean traditional plant foods which had not reported, yet. This study was to investigate vitamin $B_{12}$ intake and its dietary sources and the vitamin $B_{12}$ status in the very old elderly Koreans. We measured serum vitamin $B_{12}$ level and estimated the amounts of vitamin $B_{12}$ intake from different dietary sources in female elderly Koreans aged 85 and over who had consumed a relatively low animal traditional diet for the whole life. The average age of the subjects (n = 127) was 98.0 years (85-108 years). The assessment on energy and nutrient intake involved a one-day 24-hour recall, and serum vitamin $B_{12}$ concentration was measured by radioimmunoassay. Overall diet pattern was not different between the 85-99 yr-old group and centenarians, except centenarians were taking more dairy product. The average ratio of plant food to animal food consumption was 87.5:12.5 in weight. The average vitamin $B_{12}$ intake of our subjects was 3.2 ${\mu}g$, and 52.7% of subjects consumed under estimated average requirement, 2.0 ${\mu}g$/day. On dietary source, 67.3% of dietary vitamin $B_{12}$ was from meat, eggs and fishes and 30.6% was from plant foods, such as soybean-fermented foods, seaweeds, and kimchi. The average serum vitamin $B_{12}$ concentration was 450.5 pg/mL, and low serum vitamin $B_{12}$ (< 200 pg/mL) was found in 9.6% of subjects. Dietary vitamin $B_{12}$ intake was significantly lower in subjects with low serum vitamin $B_{12}$ (0.79 ${\mu}g$/day) than those with normal serum vitamin $B_{12}$ (3.47 ${\mu}g$/day). There were no significant difference in vitamin $B_{12}$ intake and its dietary sources and serum vitamin $B_{12}$ level between the 85-99 yr- old group and centenarians. In conclusion, several plant-origin foods including seaweed, soybean-fermented foods, and kimchi, may contribute significantly to good vitamin $B_{12}$ status in very old elderly Koreans.

  • Housing selections of the elderly depends on various changing factors as they get old. Among those factors, housing satisfaction might be one of the most predictable and crucial factor. This study is focused on the casual effect of housing satisfaction on the elderly's likelihood of selection among three alternatives of housing type. The sample was selected from 349 elderly aged above 65 who were living in Jeonju area, and was analyzed from multiple regressions and casual analysis. The results could be summarized as follows; First, the elderly preferred 'their own house living at present (aging in place)' among three housing type. Second, factors that influenced on housing satisfaction of the elderly were condition of health, economic status, living with spouse or not, level of social activities, and family supports. Third, the elderly who were male, without spouse living in single-family houses, in better health condition and with lower educational level were having more likelihood of selection of present housing. The elderly who were having more likelihood to select reverse mortgage payment were male, with spouse, living in apartment houses, the older, in worse health conditions and economic status. And the elderly who were male, with spouse, living in apartment houses, and in worse health conditions were having more likelihood to select national rental housing.

  • The purpose of this study is to assess the residential satisfaction of no-charge welfare facility for the elderly, and to examine the effect of the integration with pay-training institute on residential satisfaction. The data were collected from staffs and fifty one residents of welfare facility by interview and questionnaire. The statistical analysis was conducted to identify the residential satisfaction. A half of the elderly were aged over seventy five years old, eighty four percents of them were female, and seventy seven percents of them were non-educated. Forty two percents of the elderly considered themselves to be unhealthy, but the ADL data reveals that they are relatively healthy. The most of residents are highly satisfied with whole welfare facility. But, the level of satisfaction on the bathroom, the storing space, the cooking table and the benches were relatively low. These dissatisfactions can be solved by the expanding of the storing space, setting up of a common washing room and electric cooking stove, and the increasing of the number of benches. Also, it was recommended for the elderly to set up the Ondol-style rest room with the western style rest room. The level of satisfaction on the attached training institute with no-charge welfare facility for the elderly were high. This has positive effect on residential satisfaction of the elderly. Therefore, the community integrated welfare facility can be the alternative plan for the enhancement of residential satisfaction and quality of elderly life.

  • Nowadays, Korean society is quickly transforming into an aging society. There are lots of problems resulting from old aged society. First of all, in the case of medical service, it is an urgent task to find out what is the most proper care for the elderly in order to reduce medical expenses. It can be said that the geriatric hospital has to be designed to give adequate medical service to the elderly. However, it is hard to find out what the differences is between the general hospital and the geriatric hospital. Especially, the plan of the patient room has to reflect thoughtful consideration relating to characteristics of the elderly due to the fact that there is a close connection between the patient room and residence. Therefore this study aims to suggest the guideline and the plan of the patient room for the elderly.

  • The purpose of this study was to classify the somatotype of elderly women and to extract discriminant factors of the classification. The subjects were 218 elderly women aged 60-85 years old. Data were collected from 46 anthropometric and photographic measurements of each subject and analyzed by frequencies, crosstabs, analysis of variance and discriminant analysis. The somatotype was classified into 5 types according to the lateral view. The normal type was defined as the type which the plumb line passes through the cervicale and the lateral malleolus. The lean-back type positioned the plumb line more posteriorly than normal type. The swayback type positioned the plumb line at about the same line as the lean-back type, but curvature of lateral view was prominent. The lean-forward type I and II positioned the plumb line more anteriorly than normal, but the spinal curvature of the type II disappeared. As the result of discriminant analysis, significant discriminant factors of anthropometric measurement were cervicale height, anterior waist height, neck point to posterior waist length, anterior waist length. Photographic measurement were C valve, D value, ∠${\alpha}$ and ∠${\beta}$.

  • Purpose: There have been several comparative studies that have focused on elderly groups of patients with gastric cancer. However, new criteria are needed for this elderly group because of the longer life span of Korean people. The diagnosis of gastric cancer has sometimes been missed in the young age group. The perioperative risk is high in the elderly age group because of their combined diseases. This study was designed to determine the differences of the clinicopathologic features and the prognosis between young and elderly patients with gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: Eighty patients were divided in two groups and these patients were selected for making comparison between young and elderly groups of patients with gastric cancer. The young age group consisted of 31 patients who were aged 35 years old or less. The elderly age group was made up of 49 patients who were aged 75 years old or above. Results: For the clinicopathologic features, the young age group was characterized by a high incidence of the poorly differentiated type of adenocarcinoma and the diffuse type too, according to the Lauren classification. On the other hand, the elderly group was characterized by a high incidence of poorly to moderate differentiated adenocarcinoma and also the intestinal type according to the Lauren classification. The other clinical differences were unremarkable. Additionally, there was no survival advantage in the young age group compared to the elderly group. Conclusion: There were no clinicopathologic and prognostic differences between both extreme age groups. So, active surgical treatment is recommended even for the elderly patients group.

  • Korea is undergoing a change in its population structure, due to economic development, falling birth rates and the development of health care. As the population ages, the number of elderly people who have difficulty in daily life such as dementia and paralysis increases every day. The growth of nuclear families and the increased participation of women in society make it difficult to take care of elderly people who need long-term care at home. As the social problems resulting from this have emerged as serious problems, the government enacted and implemented the Long Term Care Insurance Act to improve the quality of life for the elderly subject to long-term care and to ease the burden of family support in order to solve such problems. Therefore, the present study explores ways to improve legal and institutional aspects, and seek mental and psychological measures for the stability of old life as well as the physical health of welfare.
