  • To find out why elderly drivers have more frequent traffic accidents on intersection than any other one, this study was conducted to examine the characteristics of elderly drivers' driving behavior on intersection using a multifaceted driving behavior indicator. To do that, the driving behavior of both young adult drivers and elderly drivers were compared and analyzed, using a graphic driving simulator. As a result, compared with young adult drivers, elderly drivers showed a poor driving performance, and a high ratio of visual scanning time on the specific direction regardless of driving situation. Also, compared with young adult drivers, elderly drivers had a high overall level of arousal, and the phasic arousal activity on the specific stimulus was low. These results imply that through the intervention which induces the change in multifaceted indicators mentioned earlier, they could be helped to drive more safely on intersection.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine elderly drivers' driving performances at the intersections, suggested by Bao and Boyle(2009), according to visual information processing skills. Visual information processing skills of elderly drivers were measured by using the visual working memory task, developed by Min et al.(2006). Seven elderly drivers were divided into two groups(good/poor) depending on the level of visual information processing skills and eleven younger drivers were a contrast group. This study examined the differences of driving performance(i.e., intersection passing times, approach velocities, speed variation and handling variations) among three groups. The results showed that elderly drivers having the poor visual information processing skills passed more slowly through the intersection than the contrast group, and passing times between elderly drivers having the good visual information processing skills and the contrast group was not significantly different. It is suggested that elderly drivers having the poor visual information processing skills use more times when they pass through the intersection, because they don't process a lot of hazardous and latent hazardous factors quickly.

  • This study was to examine to the CNS(Central Nervous System) responses of elderly drivers at the green, yellow, and red signal types. To examine this result, the older adults over age 65 who has more than 5 years of driving experience participated this experiment. In addition, we used audio-visual film clips as the stimulus than driving simulator, because the CNS reponses are sensitive to movement such as steering wheel. While subjects were watching one car's driving among green, yellow, or red signal types at the intersection, we measured their EEG(electroencephalogram) using monopolar electrodes from Fz, Cz and Pz sites. As a result, relative sizes of beta waves were changed due to the signal type conditions, and pre- and post-time of entering the intersection at the measured sites, separately. It suggests that the elderly drivers' CNS responses were different by the signal types.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of a positive psychology improvement program on elders' depression and death anxiety. Methods: This was conducted as a quasi-experimental study with non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The participants were community elders aged over 65 recruited by convenient sampling. A total of 94 elders (32 in the individual experimental group, 32 in the collective experimental group, and 30 in the control group) participated. Data were collected between April and September, 2012 and analyzed by using SPSS/WIN 21. Results: The individual and group approach experimental groups had significantly lower scores of depression than the control group after the treatment (F=7.50, p=.001). For death anxiety, however, only the individual experimental group had a significantly lower score compared to the control group (F=4.56, p=.013). Conclusion: These results indicate that the positive psychology improvement program was effective in decreasing depression and death anxiety in the elderly. Therefore, the program needs to be applied in a customized way fittingly to the characteristics of the elderly in community, and individually and/or collectively according to its purposes.

  • As the aging of our society gradually deepens, the quality of the elderly care environment based on the elderly care model of the Silver Town space is gradually becoming the focus of everyone's attention. This study mainly studies and discusses the visual and behavioral characteristics of the elderly. In order to pay more attention to the special needs of the elderly in order to optimize the spatial environment, the design of visual experience design in the living environment of the elderly in Silver Town is designed. explore in depth Through this, the environment of the space is optimized so that the elderly can enjoy their old age in a comfortable environment. This study is based on visual psychology, environmental psychology, gerontology and other theories. Through the collection of related literature and field research on the elderly, the function and overall combination of the living environment of the elderly in Silver Town is studied, and the environment is organized. Based on the behavioral and visual needs of middle-aged and older people, a design method was proposed to strengthen the visual connection in space. In terms of visual experience, the lighting, colors, and materials of the environment are studied. Through a combination of theory and research and experiments, it is concluded that the elderly prefer plants with warm colors, high brightness colors, and geometric patterns. The design principle and design method of the visual experience in the Silver Town space are summarized.

  • This study focused on driver's carefulness and researched the relationship between driving confidence and driving behaviour in elderly and young drivers. In order to evaluate the driving confidence level, 'Driving Confidence Scale' was developed. 175 of young drivers(younger than 25) and 150 of elderly drivers(older than 65) conducted Driving Confidence Scale. They answered their driving patterns; driving history, annual mileage, the frequency of committing traffic violation, and experience of accident within 5 years. Elderly driver's data was collected by face to face interview. The factors of driving confidence were analyzed and the driving confidence level of young and elderly drivers was compared. Driving Confidence was consisted of 4 factors; environment of traffic condition, safe driving, driving ability, attention. Elderly driver's confidence was lower than young driver's. Elderly drivers in high driving confidence group, showed longer driving history and they were tend to commit violations more frequently than elerly drivers in low driving confidence group. Young drivers, whose driving confidence level was high answered more driving history, annual mileage, the frequency of committing traffic violation and experience of accident within 5 years.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study is to review the significance of managing "Mibyeong" in geriatric health in Korean medicine and psychology. Methods: We performed a literature search using OASIS, Koreantk, RISS, DBpia, and PubMed databases. We retrieved research articles using the keywords related to mibyeong (未病), sub-health (亞健康), Korean-medicine, psychology and geriatric health. Results: Both Korean medicine and psychology emphasize biological, psychological, and social balance and well-being. In addition, both value individual personality and constitution. Mibyeong is a Korean medical concept suggesting sub-health. Elderly individuals who are in a state of Mibyeong are frail and vulnerable to disorders and illness. Since depression, chronic diseases, low physical and mental activity have fatal outcomes in frail and elderly subjects, positive psychological support and active management of Mibyeong are very important. Conclusions: Geriatric health conditions are associated with chronic disease and multiple risk factors, including physiological, psychological, social, and economic conditions. A preventive and integrative approach is essential for geriatric health as prevention is better than cure for most geriatric diseases and illnesses.

  • Background: Although Korea ranks first in the suicide rate of elderly individuals, there is limited research on those who attempt suicide, with preventive measures largely based on population-based studies. We compared the demographic and clinical characteristics of elderly individuals who attempted suicide with those of younger adults who visited the emergency department after suicide attempts and identified the factors associated with lethality in the former group. Methods: Individuals who visited the emergency department after a suicide attempt from April 1, 2017, to January 31, 2020, were included. Participants were classified into two groups according to age (elderly, ≥65 years; adult, 18-64 years). Among the 779 adult patients, 123 were elderly. We conducted a chi-square test to compare the demographic and clinical features between these groups and a logistic regression analysis to identify the risk factors for lethality in the elderly group. Results: Most elderly participants were men, with no prior psychiatric history or suicide attempts, and had a higher prevalence of underlying medical conditions and attributed their attempts to physical illnesses. Being sober and planning suicide occurred more frequently in this group. In the elderly group, factors that increased the mortality rate were biological male sex (p<0.05), being accompanied by family members (p<0.05), and poisoning as a suicide method (p<0.01). Conclusion: Suicide attempts in elderly individuals have different characteristics from those in younger adults and are associated with physical illness. Suicides in the former group are unpredictable, deliberate, and fatal. Therefore, tailored prevention and intervention strategies addressing the characteristics of those who are elderly and attempt suicide are required.

  • This research measured a concept of mobility which is included objective travel behavior as well as psychological and physical mechanism that influenced travel behavior. And then, this research examined the relation between mobility and the quality of life in elderly drivers. In research 1, to evaluate the reliability and validity of "Mobility Questionnaire(MQ)", we tested "MQ" to 207 drivers aged 20 years and older. In research 2, we examined the mobility level of elderly drivers. Also we investigated the influence that mobility of elderly drivers impacts on their quaility of life. we used "MQ", "Psychological Well-Being Questionnaire(PWBQ)" to 91 drivers aged 65 years and older. To factor analysis, MQ consisted of 'Safe Driving Ability(ADA)', 'Travel Increase(TI)', 'Travel Decrease(TD)', 'Social Activity(SA)', and 'Driving Situational Adaptability(DSA)'. The amount and speed of driving of elderly drivers reduced driving behavior than other drivers. Also, elderly drivers negatively assessed their physical abilities for safe driving and felt a low confidence in specific driving situation. On the other hand, elderly drivers take parts in social activity constructively. A review of the relation of mobility and quality of life showed that mobility of elderly drivers had positive correlation with PWB. Specially, 'ADA', 'SA', and 'DSA' had significant correlations with PWB of elderly drivers. The mobility of elderly drivers had an effect on 'Autonomy', 'Environmental mastery', 'Self-acceptance', and 'Positive relations with others'.
