Data were collected from May to June 2019 using Interpersonal Reactivity Index-Korean version, Semantic Differential Scaling for evaluating attitudes toward elders, Scale of Ageism, and Questionnaire for care willingness toward older adults. Data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression using SPSS 21.0 Program. The factors with the most significant influence on the elderly care willingness was prejudice toward the elderly (β=-.30, p=.001), followed by attitude toward the elderly (β=-.25, p=.004), third year (β=-.23, p=.016), satisfaction with volunteer experience with the elderly (β=-.21, p=.008), satisfaction with nursing major (β=-.17, p=.032), and empathy (β=.16, p=.046). These factors explained 46% of the elderly care willingness. In conclusion, it is necessary to reduce prejudice against the elderly and develop positive attitudes toward the elderly to increase the willingness of nursing students to care for older adults. In particular, further study is required to increase the willingness of nursing students to care for the elderly through developing programs such as curriculums for positive contact experiences with the elderly and volunteer activities for the elderly.

  • Objectives: While there have been many quantitative studies on the public's attitude towards mental illnesses, it is hard to find quantitative study which focused on the contextual effect on the public's attitude. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that affect the public's beliefs and attitudes including contextual effects. Methods: We analyzed survey on the public's beliefs and attitudes towards mental illness in Korea with multi-level analysis. We analyzed the public's beliefs and attitudes in terms of prejudice as an intermediate outcome and social distance as a final outcome. Then, we focused on the associations of factors, which were individual and regional socioeconomic factors, familiarity, and knowledge based on the comparison of the intermediate and final outcomes. Results: Prejudice was not explained by regional variables but was only correlated with individual factors. Prejudice increased with age and decreased by high education level. However, social distance controlling for prejudice increased in females, in people with a high education level, and in regions with a high education level and a high proportion of the old. Therefore, social distance without controlling for prejudice increased in females, in the elderly, in highly educated people, and in regions with a high education and aged community. Conclusions: The result of the multi-level analysis for the regional variables suggests that social distance for mental illness are not only determined by individual factors but also influenced by the surroundings so that it could be tackled sufficiently with appropriate considering of the relevant regional context with individual characteristics.

  • This study uses [the instrument of ageing anxiety] in order to find if a negative prejudice against the old affects the attitude toward sex of the aged. The result shows no significant relation between ageing anxiety and the knowledge of and attitude toward sex of the aged. However, it does show that the higher the ageing anxiety is, the lower the knowledge of sex and the more restrictive the attitude toward it. The knowledge of and attitude toward sex of the aged shows meaninggul changes after education. Nursing students who were educated come to have more knowledge about and are more open to it. This result supports the preposition of this study. As society grows older the endeavour to guarantee a high-quality life for the old is necessary and the old should be regarded as an entity which has its own characteristic desires. Especially for the old to enjoy a good life as a sexual being, the mystical barriers about sex and old age ought to be removed. In the future the old themselves may maintain sexual desires regardless of age and society will be required to correct its prejudice against the old having sex. Particularly nursing students, as an effort to provide the old with overall care, should examine the elderly's sexual desires in a physical, psychological, and social context and consider the normal sexual changes occuring during the aging process and finally integrate this information into their nursing plans. In order to fulfill this role successfully they should overcome their own prejudice and educate themselves about this particular problem. As the proportion of the old becomes bigger and the concern about the quality of their life grows, sex among the old will become more important in the nursing field. By putting an educational mediation programme into operation with nursing students and estimating the effect, this study supplies the foundation to activate new educational programmes. In short it tells us that education can be a practical method to confront the myth and conventions concerning sex among the aged.

To do this, we selected 10 S-eup sites as a sample and conducted a life satisfaction survey of 100 smokers and 100 nonsmokers among the elderly aged 65 years and over, and compared the differences in psychological life satisfaction among these groups. The results showed that smokers were significantly more satisfied with mental life satisfaction, enjoyment of life, participation in social activities and loneliness than non - smokers. These results suggest that elderly people aged 65 and over in rural areas are exposed to smoking habits for at least 3,40 years. The results of this study are expected to help the elderly living in aging society to understand the cigarette smokes correctly. In the future study, Research is expected to be active.

  • The purpose of this study was to describe physical health and depression status, as well as to assessing factors that influence the physical health status. Method: The data was collected from July to August 2000. Study participants were 252 community-dwelling elderly who were recruited from 10 senior centers located in Seoul, Korea. Their physical health status was measured using the Physical Health Status Measurement Scale developed by Choi and Jung (1991), and depression was measured using BDI-II developed by Beck et al. (1996). Results: 1) The physical health status score was 4.00 $\pm$0.68 (range :1- 5). The sub-dimension that showed the highest score was personal hygiene ability at 4.62$\pm$0.95, and the lowest score was sexual function at 2.20$\pm$1.38. 2. The depression score was 17.99+9.79 (range : 0-63). Regarding the sub-dimensions, the depression scores were higher in the domain of interest with sexuality, general weakness, difficulty in concentration, and fatigue. 3. Deeper levels of depression were correlated with a declining physical health status. 4. The most influential factor on physical health was depression, and the explaining variance was 31.68%. Conclusion: It is concluded that elder subjects in senior centers had fairly good physical health and self-care ability. Also, they did not have significantly high levels of depression. Therefor, health promotion of elderly, it is recommended that elder individuals should be regarded as a respectful and useful segment of our society. Along with this basic concept, there should be a social milieu that does not snow prejudice. Moreover, health care professionals should give more attention to helping the elderly achieve a minimal level of ALD, and, particularly, to raise sexuality and help energize the lives of elder individuals.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of contact with the elderly in a daily life on children's ageist attitude. Acknowledging the people's tendency to report in socially appropriate ways to the explicit attitude measurement, implicit measurement is introduced, and relation with the daily contact with elderly(DCE) is analyzed. The research question are as follows: 1) Are these two attitudes explained by different factors? 2) Can DCE alleviate both children's implicit and explicit ageist attitude? 3) How do the contact with grandparent and neighboring elderly affect the children's explicit and implicit ageist attitude? Data was collected from 503 fourth to sixth grade elementary school children. Child-Age Implict Association Test is used to measure implicit ageist attitude. Multinominal logistic analysis and ordered logistic analysis was applied. Followings are the main results: First, explicit and implicit ageist attitudes are found to be related with different predictors. Second, Elderly contact seems to lighten children's ageist attitude overall. Third, the effects of grandparental contact and the neighboring elderly contact on two different ageism were different. While the effect of elderly neighbor contact is limited to the expression of ageism, grandparental contact has a influence not only on the explicit but also on the implicit ageism, even though the effect on implicit attitude is limited in extent. Forth, not the quality of contact but the quantity of it was related to implicit ageist attitude. This result contradicts conventional idea of Intergroup Contact Theory. In the further research, the predictor of implicit ageist attitude need to be throughly examined.
