  • Korea is now entering into aging society next to Japan in Asia, which is considered as unusual in the semi-developed countries. More than 50 year-old consumer market is anticipated to grow to 28.7% of the total in 2010 from 20.4% in 2000. In particular, the silver market is estimated to be formed in full range in 2010 when the generation born in 50s and 60s after the Korean War start to retire. In this study, body shapes are classified as standard, obese, and tiny according to the previous studies based on the body shape characteristics and the body measurement of the Elderly Women. Based on the classification, we developed pattern of the panty for the obese Elderly Women to provide basic materials for the quality enhancement of the clothing of the increasing Elderly Women. The followings are the result of the study 1. To categorize the body shapes of the Elderly Women focusing on the lower half, we grouped the target subjects using the nested approach by the average standard deviation and the factor analysis minimal diffusion method. Accordingly, type 1 and 2 had 36 members respectively and type 3 had 43 members. In this study, two Elderly Women subjects with standard body shape falling under the type 1 were selected as the subjects. 2. In the second trial evaluation for the panty pattern for the Elderly Women 32 items for appearance test and 3 items for functional test were evaluated. The scores in leg, sideline and hip were shown high and the balance between the parts was maintained very well. In the functional test, the panty used to be too tight for the leg curve but in the second trial it was improved, too. In each item, the second trial test showed better score than the first trial test. Conclusively, the most optimal panty prototype for the Elderly Women was proposed according to the trial test result.

  • Purpose: With particular focus on the analysis of elderly community space in local communities, this study aims to propose policies and points to consider in the planning and management of community space that can encourage the elderly to actively participate in community activities. Methods: The study explores five different Japanese community spaces that have been utilized as platforms for intergenerational interactions; the research was carried out by literature review, field work and interviews. Results: The results are as follows. First, the planning of the community space for the elderly must be combined with the space that the locals often use. Community space should not be seen as a place for a specific generation, but for everyone to interact with each other at any time; hence it must be fostered to be accessible for anyone regardless of age. Second, community space for the elderly requires to be planned as an accessible place for everyone such as cafes and restaurants. The adjacent areas require social infrastructure like libraries and public baths which are frequently used by people from various age groups. Third, in order to spark off the intergenerational community space as the stronghold of local communities, it needs to be a place where the elderly is given sufficient role and meaning as a member of the community. To achieve this, it is essential to support the locals to take active measures in creating job opportunities for the elderly and the disabled, and to develop voluntary self-sufficiency and volunteering programs.

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest a silver blouse design by applying modularization. The precedent study of the researcher was used to analyze the design characteristics that were displayed in domestic and foreign silver blouses. This study was taken as the follow-up research as the module components and range of the silver blouse were set up and it was based on to suggest a silver blouse design with application of modularization. The intention was to base on the module system used in various fields to apply the modularization method on the module design research of silver blouse and as a result, it was derived into 6 types. The traditional design reflected on the characteristic of how the silver generation prioritizes practicality and in order to emphasize this, it will be more effective to apply the fastener and folding method for the development of the design. The contemporary design reflected on the characteristic of how the silver generation prioritizes aesthetics and in order to emphasize this, it will be more effective to apply the module composition method where integration can be made according to the desire of the wearer for the development of the design. The trendy design reflected on how the characteristic of the silver generation wants to look younger and the derived modularization method can be applied freely for expression. Since the range, structure, and formation where modularization can be applied are general, it is implied that there is a need to take sustainable development has to be conducted as the tool that can create different types of design.

  • The survey was conducted by using questionnaires in order to investigate the expectation of over middle aged people on dietary living during their elderly life. Many persons(41.9%) anticipate that some kind of change will happen in dietary living during their elderly life. They are willing to prepare their own meals by themselves (73.5% of male and 86.6% of female). It is expected that they prefer various kinds of foods, korean traditional foods, home-made foods, natural food to processed food, and nutritionally balanced foods. The balance of nutrition and easiness of digestion should be primarily considered as a base of food choice, and then taste or convenience. The result of this study indicates that korean traditional food culture can not be easily changed. If food industries had a plan to produce some items for future silver generation, they should make efforts to develop processed foods considered the nutrition and digestibility, natural foods packed conveniently for home-cooking, and food preparation equipment used easily by elderly people.

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate the prevalence of depressive symptoms and risk factors in elderly people (old vs oldest-old) with arthritis. Methods: The Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) was used with a sample of 1,084 elderly people with arthritis aged 65 or above. Results: We found that the prevalence of depressive symptom was greater for oldest-old people (66.7%) compared to old people (56%). Significant differences between old people and oldest-old people were found for education, living with spouse, number of generation, regular exercise, body mass index (BMI), ADL limitation, self-rated health, and depression. Significant differences existed between depression and non-depression in terms of all variables except region and BMI among old people. But, among the oldest people, ADL limitation and self-rated health showed differences. The Logistic regression analysis revealed that religion, medical comorbidity, ADL limitation, self-rated health were significantly associated with depressive symptoms in old people. But, in oldest-old people, none of the variables were associated with depressive symptoms. Conclusion: The findings show that there are age differences in depression and related factors in elderly people with arthritis. Longitudinal studies, which covered depressive symptom severity and which are controlled for a large number of potential confounders, will need to complement the results of this study in the future.
