  • In this paper, the thick-walled laminated, orthotropic as well as bimaterial, composite hollow spheres under impact pressure are analyzed in detail by using the semi-discrete finite element method with the Houbolt time-integration scheme which results in unconditionally stable transient numerical results. Numerical results are obtained by using the self-constructed spherically symmetric (one-dimensional) and axially symmetric (two-dimensional) finite element programs, and compared with the previous solutions by other researchers, being shown some of which are incorrect. The finite element package Nastran is also adopted for numerical comparison.

  • In this study, a new algorithm analyzing dynamic crack propagation problem by the coupling technique of Meshfree Method and Finite Element Method is proposed. The coupling procedure of two methods is presented with a short description of Meshfree Method especially, Element-free Galerkin (EFG) method. The elastodynamic fracture theory is presented, and a numerical implementation procedure for dynamic fracture analysis by Meshfree Method is also discussed. A couple of dynamic crack propagation problems illustrate the performance of the propsed technique. The accuracy of numerical solutions by the developed algorithm are compared with those of analytical solutions and experimental ones.

  • Dynamic behaviour of a slider-crank mechanism associated with a smart flexible connecting rod is investigated. Effect of various mechanisms' parameters including crank length, flexibility of the connecting rod and the slider's mass on the dynamic behaviour is studied. Two control schemes are proposed for elastodynamic vibration suppression of the flexible connecting rod and also obtaining a constant angular velocity for the crank. The first scheme is based on feedback linearization approach and the second one is based on a sliding mode controller. The input signals are applied by an electric motor located at the crank ground joint, and two layers of piezoelectric film bonded to the top and bottom surfaces of the connecting rod. Both of the controllers successfully suppress the vibrations of the elastic linkage.

  • The paper deals with the interaction between three Griffith cracks propagating under antiplane shear stress at the interface of two dissimilar infinite elastic half-spaces. The Fourier transform technique is used to reduce the elastodynamic problem to the solution of a set of integral equations which has been solved by using the finite Hilbert transform technique and Cooke’s result. The analytical expressions for the stress intensity factors at the crack tips are obtained. Numerical values of the interaction efect have been computed for and results show that interaction effects are either shielding or amplification depending on the location of each crack with respect to other and crack tip spacing. • This paper presents a proof-concept investigation on the active vibration control of two hybrid smart structures (HSSs). The first one is consisting of a piezoelectric film (PF) actuator and an electro-rheological fluid(ERF) actuator, and the other is featured by a piezoceramic (PZT) actuator and a shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator. For the PF/ERF hybrid smart structure, both the increment of the damping ratios and the suppression of the tip deflections are evaluated in order to demonstrate control effectiveness of the PF actuator and ERF actuator and the hybrid actuation. For the PZT/SMA hybrid smart structure, the PZT actuator takes account of the high frequency excitation, while the SMA actuator exerts large vibration control force. The experimental results exhibit superior abilities of the hybrid actuation systems to tailor elastodynamic responses of the HSS rather than a single class of actuation system alone.

  • This paper proposes a real-time simulation technique for thin shells undergoing large deformation. Thin shells are almost two-dimensional structures visually well approximated as surfaces, such as leaves, paper sheets, hats, aluminum cans. Unfortunately accurate simulation of these structures requires one of the most complex formulations in continuum mechanics, shell theory [4]. Moreover, there has not yet been any work reported to produce visually convincing animation of them while achieving real-time performance. Motivated by discrete shells [5] and modal warping [3], we formulate dynamics of thin shells using mass-spring models instead of finite element models, and then apply the modal warping technique to cope with large rotational deformation of thin shells. Experiments show that the proposed technique runs in real-time, and that it can simulate large bending and/or twisting deformations with acceptable realism.

  • A Mixed Volume and Boundary Integral Equation Method is applied for the effective analysis of plane elastostatic problems in unbounded solids containing general anisotropic inclusions and voids or isotropic inclusions. It should be noted that this newly developed numerical method does not require the Green's function for anisotropic inclusions to solve this class of problems since only Green's function for the unbounded isotropic matrix is involved in their formulation for the analysis. This new method can also be applied to general two-dimensional elastodynamic and elastostatic problems with arbitrary shapes and number of anisotropic inclusions and voids or isotropic inclusions. Through the analysis of plane elastostatic problems in unbounded isotropic matrix with orthotropic inclusions and voids or isotropic inclusions, it will be established that this new method is very accurate and effective for solving plane elastic problems in unbounded solids containing general anisotropic inclusions and voids or isotropic inclusions.

  • Transient linear elastodynamic problems are numerically analyzed in a time-domain by the Finite Element Method, for which the variational formulation based upon the equations of motion in convolution integral is newly derived. This formulation is implicit and does not include the time derivative terms so that the computation procedure is simple and less assumptions are required comparing to the conventional time-domain dynamic numerical algorithms, being able to get the improved numerical accuracy and stability. That formulation is expanded using the semi-discrete approximation to obtain the finite element equations. In the temporal approximation, the time axis is divided equally and constant and linear time variations are assumed in those intervals. It is found that unconditionally stable numerical results are obtained in case of the constant time variation. Some numerical examples are given to show the versatility of the presented formulation.

  • A 2D finite-element numerical simulation has been developed to investigate the generation of ultrasonic waves in a homogeneous isotropic elastic slab under a line-focused laser irradiation. Discussing the physical processes involved in the thermoelastic phenomena, we describe a model for the pulsed laser generation of ultrasound in a metal slab. Addressing an analytic method, on the basis of an integral transform technique, for obtaining the solutions of the elastodynamic equation, we outline a finite element method for a numerical simulation of an ultrasonic wave propagation. We present the numerical results for the displacements and the stresses generated by a line-focused laser pulse on the surface of a stainless steel slab.

  • In this paper, theoretical approach with applications of the periodic wave solutions in an elastic material is applied by study the effect of initial stress, and rotation, on the radial displacement and the corresponding stresses in non-homogeneous orthotropic material. An Analytical solution for the elastodynamic equation has obtained concerning the component of displacement. The variations of stresses and displacements have shown graphically. Comparisons with previously published results in the absence of initial stress, rotation and non-homogeneity have made. Finally, numerical results have given and illustrated graphically for each case considered.
