This study is performed to examine the physical and mechanical properties of concrete using recycled aggregate and industrial by-products. The test results show that the unit weight, compressive and flexural strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity and dynamic modulus of elasticity are decreased with increasing the content of recycled aggregate. But, the absorption ratio is increased with increasing the content of recycled aggregate. The unit weight is 2,237∼2,307 kg/$\textrm{m}^3$, the absorption ratio is 2.96∼4.12%, the compressive strength is 415∼532 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the flexural strength is 75∼96 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the ultrasonic pulse velocity is 4,350∼4,949 m/s and the dynamic modulus of elasticity is $390\times10^3\;∼\;465\times10^3$ kg f/$\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively These recycled aggregate concrete can be used for high strength concrete.
The objective of this study is to estimate the mechanical behavior in bending and the anatomical changes of wood under several deflection rates. Sample specimens of water-saturated Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) were stressed to rupture under several deflection rates. Mechanical properties of wood such as modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture and stress at proportional limit, and anatomical changes affected by deflection rates were estimated. Microscopic observations on compression side of the test specimens when the specimen was loaded to rupture were carried out by the SEM (scanning electron microscopy). The results are summarized as follows: 1. The mechanical properties of wood were affected by variations of the deflection rates. The modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR) and stress at proportional limit were in proportion to the logarithm of deflection rates. 2. The deflection of wood at rupture in bending increased as deflection rates decreased. 3. The variations of the microscopic deformations of sample specimens were closely related to the deflection of wood at rupture. In case of largely deflected wood by maximum bending load, severe and abundant microscopic deformations were observed.

In this paper, we implement the volume pulse detection system which can quantitatively represent an artery elasticity. The system consists of transducer which has IRLED-photodiode detecter, temperature sensor, filters, preprocessing circuits, A/D converter, serial communication part and computer system. In order to presume the artery elasticity information we measure the volume pulse at four points and then evaluate the transition time, distance and the correlation coefficient of the pulse wave between the points. We test the system with 10 subjects during the week for basic experiment and obtain the data at four points. As the result of experiment, we can detect normalized volume pulse wave and evaluated parameter with effectively.

Exact solution on the anti-symmetric response of ships having uniform sectional properties in waves is derived. Boundary value problem consisted of Timoshenko beam equation and free-free end condition is solved analytically. The responses are assumed as linear and wave loads are calculated by using strip method. Horizontal bending moment, shear force and torsional moment are calculated. The developed analysis model is used for the benchmark test of the numerical codes in this problem. Also the application on the preliminary design of barge-like ships and VLFS (Very Large Floating Structure) is expected

This paper deals with the damage assessment of the concrete beam using Damage-area concept and the modulus of elasticity reduction of the beam was evaluated. Simply supported concrete beams were loaded at the mid-span. When the displacements from the tests were increased more than $10\%$ of the initial values, flexural cracks occured. Judging from the observed cracks, damaged area of the beams were assumed and the modulus of elasticity reduction using the smeared-cracking concept was estimated to minimize the error between the test results and analytical results. Main parameters for the assessment were height of the crack area, length of the crack area, position of the crack area and the modulus of elastic reduction ratio. In each stage, damaged elements and their stiffness reduction were estimated to minimized the error.
The essential idea of the element-free Galerkin method (EFG) is that moving least-squares (MLS) approximation are used for the trial and test functions with the variational principle (weak form). By using the weighted orthogonal basis function to construct the MLS interpolants, we derive the formulae for an improved element-free Galerkin (IEFG) method for solving three-dimensional problems in linear elasticity. There are fewer coefficients in improved moving least-squares (IMLS) approximation than in MLS approximation. Also fewer nodes are selected in the entire domain with the IEFG method than is the case with the conventional EFG method. In this paper, we selected a few example problems to demonstrate the applicability of the method.
Modulus of deformation of soil is an essential parameter used for design analysis of foundations, despite its importance; little attention is paid to developing empirical models for predicting the sensitivity of deformation moduli to other parameters that obtained from the pressuremeter tests. Various methods of analysis used to predict the horizontal at rest pressure from pressuremeter testing ($P_o$), these values showed distinctive variations, five methods used to evaluate the values of horizontal at rest pressure, these values been used to evaluate the modulus of elasticity using three methods of analysis. The values of modulus showed distinctive increase when the values of horizontal at rest pressure increase for the same pressuremeter test, these increases may reach to 65%. This sensitivity of the moduli to values of horizontal lead the author to propose some reliable methods of analysis for both the horizontal at rest pressure and the modulus of deformation from pressuremeter testing.

This paper investigates the artificial neural network (ANN) to predict the dimensionless parameters for contact pressures and contact lengths under the rigid punch, the initial separation loads, and the initial separation distances of a contact problem. The problem consisted of two elastic infinitely layers (EL) loaded by means of a rigid cylindrical punch and resting on a half-infinite plane (HP). Firstly, the problem was formulated and solved theoretically using the Theory of Elasticity (ET). Secondly, the contact problem was extended based on the ANN. External load, the radius of punch, layer heights, and material properties were created by giving examples of different values used at the training and test stages of ANN. Finally, the accuracy of the trained neural networks for the case was tested using 134 new data, generated via ET solutions to determine the best network model. ANN results were compared with ET results, and well agreements were achieved.
Background: The function of a bioprosthetic heart valve is determined largely by the material properties of the valve cusps. The uniaxial tensile test has been studied extensively. This type of testing, however, does not replicate the natural biaxial loading condition. The objective of the present study was to investigate the regional variability of the biaxial strain versus pressure relationship based on the types of fixation liquid models. Material and Method: Porcine aortic valves and pulmonary valves were assigned to three groups: the untreated fresh group, the fixed with glutaraldehyde (GA) group, and the glutaraldehyde with solvent (e.g., ethanol) group. For each group we measured the radial and circumferential stretch characteristics of the valve as a function of pressure change. Result: Radial direction elasticity of porcine aortic and pulmonary valves were better than circumferential direction elasticity in fresh, GA fixed and GA+solvent fixed groups (p=0.00). Radial and circumferential direction elasticity of pulmonary valves were better than aortic valves in GA fixed, and GA+solvent fixed groups (p=0.00). Radial and circumferential direction elasticity of aortic valves were decreased after GA and GA+solvent fixation(p=0.00), except for circumferential elasticity of GA+solvent fixed valves (p=0.785). The radial (p=0.137) and circumferential (p=0.785) direction of elasticity of aortic valves were not significantly different between GA fixed. and GA+solvent fixed groups. Radial (p=0.910) and circumferential (p=0.718) direction of elasticity of pulmonary valve also showed no significant difference between GA fixed and GA+solvent fixed groups. Conclusion: When fixing porcine valves with GA, adding a solvent does not cause a loss of mechanical properties, but, does not improve elasticity either. Radial direction elasticity of porcine aortic and pulmonary valves was better than circumferential direction elasticity.

This study is focused to predict the behavior of Al foam with closed-cell structure during the 3 point bending test and the upsetting test according to aspect ratio. We calculated characters of aluminum foams with closed-cell structure and took the simulation. The effects on the aspect ratio of the cell was investigated parametrically. The analysis was carried out on two models, First, the bending test in elasticity of the rectangular beam, and Second, the upsetting test in plasticity of the circular cylinder. In the analysis, the deformation of the beam and the cylinder was influenced by the aspect ratio of the cell. Further, We assumed that the geometry of feared aluminum cell change the stress and strain in the test.
