  • This paper were performed to evaluate the elastic-plastic fracture toughness $J_IC$ by the unloading compliance method for 1/2 CT specimen of A5083-H112 aluminum alloy. A modified offset method for negative crack growth effect is presented and compared with Voss offset method. We found that the modified offset method presented can be used efficiently for a determination of the stable crack onset. The $J_IC$ by Voss offset method can be overestimated, but the suggested offset method showed a high reliability within 5% of tolerence from the results by the multi-specimen method.

  • Five Al2O3/SiC/metal composites with four different particle sizes of green SiC abrasive grains are grown by the directed oxidation of an commercially available Al-alloy. Oxidation was conducted in air at 100$0^{\circ}C$, 96 hours long. Slip casted SiC-fillers were placed on the alloy or SiC powder deposited up to the required layer thickness. Their microstructures are described and measurements of density, elastic constants, frexural strength, fracture toughness and work of fracture are reported. The results are compared with those of commercial dense sintered Al2O3. The properties of produced materials have a strong relationship to not only the properties of Al2O3, SiC, Al and Si but also to the phase share and phase distribution. The composite materials are dense (0.5% porosity), tough (KIC = 3.4~6.4 MPa{{{{ SQRT { m} }}), strong ({{{{ sigma }}B = 170~345 MPa) and reasonably shrinkage free producible. The reinforcements is attained mainly through the plastic deformation of ductile metal phase.

  • Safety and integrity are required for reactor pressure vessels because they are operated in high temperature. There are single specimen method multiple specimen method and load ratio analysis method which used as evaluation of safety and integrity for reactor pressure vessels. In this study the fracture resistance curve(J-R curve) elastic-plastic fracture toughness($J_{IC}$) and material tearing modulus ($T_{mat}$) of SA 508 class 3 alloy steel used as reactor pressure vessel steel are measured and evaluated at room temperature 20$0^{\circ}C$ and 30$0^{\circ}C$ according to unloading compliance method and load ration analysis method. And then the comparison with experimental $J_{IC}$ and theoretical$J_{IC}$ by local fracture strain is managed.

  • The hydrogen embrittlement of metallic materials is an important issue from the viewpoint of structural integrity. In this regard, the estimation of mechanical properties and fracture toughness under hydrogen conditions provides very important data. This study provides an experimental validation of the approach for simulating the small punch of Inconel 617 using finite element damage analysis, as recently proposed by the authors, and applies an inverse method for the determination of the constitutive tensile behavior of materials. The mechanical properties obtained from the inverse method are compared with those obtained from the tensile test and validated. The mechanical properties and fracture toughness are predicted by using the inverse method and finite element damage analysis.

  • Reliability in tunnel analysis is necessary to accomplish technically sound design and economical construction. For this, a thorough understanding of the construction procedure including the ground-support interaction has to be obtained. This paper describes a proper modelling technique to simulate the behavior of the steel fiber reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) which maintain the supporting capability in post-failure regime. The additional supporting effect of the steel support was also verified by 3-D analyses and a new load distribution factor were proposed. The use of the plastic moment limit (PML) alone can eliminate the occurrence of the awkwardly high tensile stress in the shotcrete and can successfully model the post-peak ductile behavior of the SFRS. But with this method, moment is limited whenever the stress caused by moment reaches tensile strength of the shotcrete irrespective of the stress by axial force. Therefore, it was necessary to find a more comprehensive method which can reflect the influence of the moment and axial force. This can be accomplished by the proper use of "liner element" which is the built-in model in FLAC. In this model, the peak and residual strength as well as the uniaxial compressive strength of the SFRS can be specified. Analyses were conducted with these two models on the 2-lane road tunnels excavated in class IV and V rock mass and results were compared with the conventional elastic beam model. Results showed that both models can reflect the fracture toughness of the SFRS which could not be accomplished by the elastic beam model.

  • The yield shear strength of bolt connection in glass fiber reinforced glulam was predicted using a design-based equation, and was compared to the empirical yield shear strength. For the predicted equation, the mechanical properties of member (the elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, shear modulus) was tested. The fracture toughness factor ($K_{ft}$) of glass fiber reinforced glulam was reflected to the revision of the design equation of bolted connection. The compressive strength properties to grain direction was influenced by annual ring angle and width of lamina. Compared with the revised yield shear strength of reinforced glulam, it was tended to be similar to the empirical yield shear strength on the diameter of bolt and the reinforcements. The revised yield shear strength from proposed formula of KBC was most appropriately matched in the bolt connection of the glass fiber reinforced glulam.

  • The elastic-plastic fracture toughness J_{Ic}$ of submerged arc welded structural steel $SB_{41}$ which has the properties of low strength and high ductility was discussed, especially paying attention to a comparison between two methods recommended by ASTM and JSME. $J_{IC}$ tests were carried out with compact specimens by means of R-curve, SZW, ultrasonic and electric potential methods. Based on the investigations in this study, the results obtained are as follows; (1) The JSME R-curve method gave the smallest $J_{IC}$ values which were physically closest to the crack initiation and seemed to be more practical and stable procedure between the two R-curve methods. (2) The JSME SZW method tended to slightly overestimate the $J_{IC}$ values at initiation of ductile tearing. (3) The ultrasonic and electric potential methods which also had a tendency to overestimate these $J_{IC}$ values were confirmed to be applicable and useful in determining these values. (4) The $J_{IC}$ values by the JSME R-curve method were 18.06 kgf/mm and 17.25kgf/ mm for the smooths and the side grooved CT specimen respectively.

  • A J$_{IC}$ test procedure by ultrasonic method performed to observe the crack opening behavior of fatigue precrack and detect the initiation of crack propagation of compact tension specimen in this paper. Pulse-echo method with 5 MHz transducer was used on the Cr-Mo steel quenched and tempered at 593.deg. C. We obtained the following results in the elastic-plastic fracture toughness test by ultrasonic method. Echo height is a little increased linearly and rapidly at the early stage of loading . Then it is decreased considerably, finally at the unstable crack growth stage, it is rapidly increased at an unpredictable rae. The initiation of crack propagation is supposed to be at the stage deviated from linearly decreased region and then blunted. J$_{IC}$ value(10.15-12.15 Kgf/mm) by ultrasonic method is lower than that(12.2 Kgf/mm) by R-curve method. But, it is required that the research for the more exact evaluation about correlation between echo height and the crack opening behavior of precrack tip will be continued. continued.ued.

  • Elastic-plastic fracture mechanics is popularly used for integrity evaluation of major components, however, it is not easy to extract standard specimens from operating facility. This paper examines how ductile fracture toughness is characterized by a small punch testing technique in conjunction with finite element analyses incorporating a damage model. At first, micro-mechanical parameters constituting Rousselier model are calibrated for typical nuclear materials using both estimated and experimental load-displacement (P-$\delta$) curves of miniaturized specimens. Then, fracture resistance (J-R) curves of relatively larger standard CT specimens are predicted by finite element analyses employing the calibrated parameters and compared with corresponding experimental ones. It was proven that estimated results by the proposed method using small punch specimen is promising and might be used as a useful tool for ductile crack growth evaluation.

  • Bridges constructed recently are preferred to have long spans and simple structure details considering not only the function as bridge but scenic beauty, maintenance, construction term and life cycle cost, etc. Therefore, they require high performance steels like extra-thick plate steels and TMCP steels. A TMCP steel produced by themo-mechanical control process is now spot lighted due to the weldability for less carbon equivalent. It improved at strength and toughness in microstructure. Recently, the SM570-TMC steel which is a high strength TMCP steel whose tensile strength is 600MPa has been developed and applied to steel structures. But, for the application of this steel to steel structures, it is necessary to elucidate not only the material characteristics but also the mechanical characteristic of welded joints. In this study, the characteristics of residual stresses in welded joints of SM570-TMC steel were studied through the three-dimensional thermal elastic-plastic analyses on the basis of mechanical properties at high temperatures obtained from the elevated temperature tensile test.
