The mechanical behavior of granular soils is affected by particle bonding including natural cementation. This study addresses a simple model of small strain stiffness and salt concentration based on wave measurements of salt-cemented particulate media. Published models of artificially cemented soils with different curing methods and several types of cementation agents are reviewed. Glass beads with the median diameter of D50 = 0.5mm are prepared in rectangular cells using the water-pluviated method in salt water with different concentrations. Piezo disk elements and bender elements embedded in the cell are used for the measurements of compressional and shear waves. The relationships between elastic wave velocities and salt concentration show an exponential function. The measured small strain stiffness matches well the predicted small strain stiffness based on micromechanics for simple cubic monosized sphere particles. This study demonstrates that the salt concentration in salt-cemented specimen may be evaluated by using elastic wave velocities.
The following composition establishes a nonlocal strain gradient plate model that is essentially related to mass sensors laying on Winkler-Pasternak medium for the vibrational analysis from graphene sheets. To achieve a seemingly accurate study of graphene sheets, the posited theorem actually accommodates two parameters of scale in relation to the gradient of the strain as well as non-local results. Model graphene sheets are known to have double variant shear deformation plate theory without factors from shear correction. By using the principle of Hamilton, to acquire the governing equations of a non-local strain gradient graphene layer on an elastic substrate, Galerkin's method is therefore used to explicate the equations that govern various partition conditions. The influence of diverse factors like the magnetic field as well as the elastic foundation on graphene sheet's vibration characteristics, the number of nanoparticles, nonlocal parameter, nanoparticle mass as well as the length scale parameter had been evaluated.

This work is devoted to the study of fresh and hardened properties of concrete containing recycled gravel. Four formulations were studied, the concrete of reference and three concretes containing recycled gravel with 30, 65 and 100 % replacement ratios. All materials were formulated on the basis of S4 class of flowability and a target C35 class of compressive strength according to the standard EN 206-1. The paper first presents the mix design method which was based on the optimization of cementitious paste and granular skeleton, then discusses experimental results. The results show that the elastic modulus and the tensile strength decrease while the peak strain in compression increases. Correlation with the water porosity is also established. The validity of analytical expressions proposed by Eurocode 2 is also discussed. The obtained results, together with results from the literature, show that these relationships do not predict adequately the mechanical properties as well as the stress-strain curve of tested materials. New expressions were established to predict the elastic modulus and the peak strain from the compressive strength of natural concrete. It was found that the proposed relationship E-$f_c$ is applicable for any type of concrete while the effect of substitution has to be introduced into the stress-strain (${\varepsilon}_{c1}-f_c$) relationship for recycled aggregate concrete. For the full stress-strain curve, the model of Carreira and Chu seems more adequate.

Overlay model had several advantages to describe hysteretic behavior of material and showed good capability for many engineering materials. However, this model is only applicable to material obeying Masing postulate. Some materials such as 316L stainless steel do not follow Masing postulate and show cyclic hardening(or softening) and strain range dependence. Low cycle fatigue tests of 316L stainless steel at 600$^{\circ}C$ were performed to investigate the characteristics of cyclic behavior of non-Masing material. From all tests cyclic softening was observed. There were differences in elastic limit of hysteresis loop according to applied strain range. To consider these features, modified overlay model was developed. Yield stresses of subelements were divided into isotropic and anisotropic part to describe the non-Masing behavior. The plastic strain range memorization was introduced to consider the strain range dependence. The prediction using modified overlay model showed a good accordance to actual hysteresis loops.
With an active structural involvement in spiral case structure (SCS) that is always the design and research focus of hydroelectric power plant (HPP), the compressible membrane sandwiched between steel spiral case and surrounding reinforced concrete was often assumed to be linear elastic material in conventional design analysis of SCS. Unfortunately considerable previous studies have proved that the foam material serving as membrane exhibits essentially nonlinear mechanical behavior. In order to clarify the effect of membrane (foam) material's nonlinear stress-strain behavior on SCS, this work performed a case study on SCS with a compressible membrane using the ABAQUS code after a sound calibration of the employed constitutive model describing foam material. In view of the successful capture of fitted stress-strain curve of test by the FEM program, we recommend an application and dissemination of the simulation technique employed in this work for membrane material description to structural designers of SCS. Even more important, the case study argues that taking into account the nonlinear stress-strain response of membrane material in loading process is definitely essential. However, we hold it unnecessary to consider the membrane material's hysteresis and additionally, employment of nonlinear elastic model for membrane material description is adequate to the structural design of SCS. Understanding and accepting these concepts will help to analyze and predict the structural performance of SCS more accurately in design effort.

The distribution of stress and strain in elastic stages is investigated by the experiments of two dimensional photoelastic coating and Moire fringe method. Center block type and cover plate type of fillet welds are used as specimens in the test. The results are as follows. 1) Center block type gets less uniform stress distribution than cover plate type. And its stress concentration factor, especially at root, is larger than that at toe. 2) When main plate and cover plate closely contact and it cause friction, stress concentration decreases more than that in case of slit. That is because stress can be transmitted on the contact surface. 3) When slit is made, the outside of fillet gets more stress than the inside of it. 4) While the plastic strain distribution of center block type reaches the maximum at root and differs very slightly from that under lower loading, the plastic strain distribution of cover plate type is inclined to get the maximum at the outside of fillet rather than at root. 5) When the plastic strain value of cover plate type is compared with that of center block type at toe and root, the relations between the former and the latter shows root<toe and root>toe. 6) Because stress distribution becomes changed according to loading, fracture angle cannot be estimated by the peaks of elastic stress distribution. 7) The strain distribution just before fracture can be found by Moire fringe method.
In the present work, the evolution rules for the internal variables including continuum damage factors are obtained using the thermodynamic framework, which are in turn facilitated to derive the elastic-plastic constitutive relation for the particulate composites. Using the Mori-Tanaka scheme, the homogenization on state and internal variables such as back-stress and damage factors is carried out to procure the rate independent plasticity relations. Moreover, the degradation of mechanical properties of constituents is depicted by the distinctive damages such that the phase and interfacial damages are treated individually accordingly, whereas the kinematic hardening is depicted by combining the Armstrong-Frederick and Phillips' back-stress evolutions. On the other hand, the present constitutive relation for each phase is expressed in terms of the respective damage-free effective quantities, then, followed by transformation into the damage affected overall nominal relations using the aforementioned homogenization concentration factors. An emphasis is placed on the qualitative analyses for strain localization by observing the perturbation growth instead of the conventional bifurcation analyses. It turns out that the proposed constitutive model offers a wide range of strain localization behavior depending on the evolution of various internal variable descriptions.
The compression creep behavior of grains when loaded depends not only on load but also on duration of load application. The most common methods of studying the load-time characteristics of agricultural products is by employing rheological models such as Burger's model. However it is sometimes not sufficient to describe the viscoelastic behavior of grains to be Burger's model. For this reason, this study was conducted to develop the rheological model which represented the creep compliance response of the rough rice kernel and was a function of initial stress applied and time. The effects of the initial stress applied and the moisture content on the compression creep behavior of the rough rice kernel were analyzed. The results were obtained from the study as follows: 1. Since the viscoelastic behavior of the rough rice kernel was nonlinear, the transient and steady state creep compliance was satisfactorily modelled as follows: $$J({\sigma},t)=A{\sigma}^B[C+Dt-exp(-Ft)]$$ But, for the every stress applied, the compression creep behavior of the samples tested can be well described by Burger's model respectively. 2. The creep compliance, the instantaneous elastic strain, the retarded elastic strain and the viscous strain of the sample tested generally increased in magnitude with increasing the applied initial stress and the moisture content used in the tests. At low moisture content, the creep compliance for the Japonica-type rough rice kernel Was a little higher than those for Indica-type and at high moisture content, vice versa at high moisture content. 3. The retardation times of the samples had not an uniform tendency by the initial stress and the moisture content. The retardation times ranged from 0.66 to 6.76 seconds, and the creep progressed from transient to steady state at a relatively high rate. 4. The less viscous strain than the instantaneous elastic strain for the samples tested indicated that rough rice kernel behaved as a viscoelastic body characterized by elasticity than viscosity.
As the springback of sheet metal during unloading may cause deviation from a desired shape, accurate prediction of springback is essential for the design of sheet stamping operations. When considering the case of a sheet metal being bent to radius $\rho$ that is such that the maximum stress induced exceed the elastic limit of the material, plastic strain in the outer surface will occur and the material will take a permanent set: but since, on removing the bending moment, the recovery of the material is not uniform across the thickness, springback will occur and the radius $\rho$ will not be maintained. Furthermore, when a tensile load being applied to each end of specimen, the tensile stress due to bending is increased and the compressive stress is decreased or cancelled and eventually the whole specimen may be in varying degree of tension. On the removal of the applied load the specimen loses its elastic strain by contracting around the contour of the block, the radius $\rho$ will be determined by the residual differential strain. Therefore in this study the springback is analytically estimated by the residual differential strains between upper and lower surfaces of greatest radius after elastic recovery, and a springback model based on the bending moment is also analytically derived for comparison purpose.
In this study, the strength and failure mechanism of red sandstones with combined defects were investigated by uniaxial compression tests on red sandstones with different crack angles using two-dimensional particle flow code numerical software, and their mechanical parameters and failure process were studied and analyzed. The results showed that the mechanical characteristics such as peak strength, peak strain, and elastic modulus of the samples with prefabricated combined defects were significantly inferior than those of the intact samples. With increasing crack angle from 15° to 60°, the weakening area of cracks increased, elastic modulus, peak strength, and peak strain gradually reduced, the total number of cracks increased, and more strain energy was released. In addition, the samples underwent initial brittle failure to plastic failure stage, and the failure form was more significant, leading to peeling phenomenon. However, with increasing crack angle from 75° to 90°, the crack-hole combination shared the stress concentration at the tip of the crack-crack combination, resulted in a gradual increase in elastic modulus, peak strain and peak strength, but a decrease in the number of total cracks, the release of strain energy reduced, the plastic failure state weakened, and the spalling phenomenon slowed down. On this basis, the samples with 30° and 45° crack-crack combination were selected for further experimental investigation. Through comparative analysis between the experimental and simulation results, the failure strength and final failure mode with cracks propagation of samples were found to be relatively similar.
