  • The J-integral used as a ductile crack initiation criterion has been discussed for the impact loaded elastic-plastic 3PB specimens. The experimental method to measure or estimate the J-integral history has been investigated and its result has been compared to the obtained elastic-plastic values by the finite element model of this study. These numerical results and the experimental curves are found to agree closely. J-integral can be calculated by only numerical analysis with the finite element model. It is proved that simple calculation can be made in order to find the possible value of J-integral by crack mouth opening displacement(CMOD) in the dynamic nonlinear fracture experiment of 3-point bend(3PB) specimen. The property of elastic-plastic material is considered at different impact velocities. The J-integral may be estimated from the crack mouth opening displacement which can be measured directly kom photographs taken during impact experiments.

  • In the case of a crack propagation, a portion of the work of inelastic deformation near the crack tip is dissipated as heat. In order to understand the thermal effect on fracture toughness, tensile test was carried out using thermocouples to monitor the variation of temperature with SA516 Gr70. The experimental results show that the temperature of specimen was increased $3.6^{\circ}C$ at static load condition. And the thermal effect was investigated connected with the steady-state stress in the vicinity of a crack propagation in the elastic-plastic C-T specimen theoretically. And fracture toughness, the energy to make crack surfaces, presented correctively. The fracture toughness with considering heat at the blunting of the crack tip ws lower about 19.3% than that of ignoring heat. So, it is resonable to apply the fracture toughness with considering thermal energy and it would be good explanation for constraint effect depending on the configuration in the presence of excessive plasticity.

In order to understand the thermal effect on fracture toughness, tensile tests were carried out using thermocouples to monitor the variation of temperature. The experimental results show that the temperature of specimen was increased $5.4^{\circ}C$ at static load condition. And fracture toughness, the energy to make crack surfaces, presented correctively. The fracture toughness with considering heat at the blunting of the crack tip is lower about 16.9% than that of ignoring heat. • For the assessment of fracture behaviors of structural components, various fracture mechanics parameters have been applied to date. New approaches to analyze structural fracture performance under elastic-plastic condition have been proposed by the development of testing methods for characterization of material behavior which is defying to the analysis by conventional fracture parameters. In this study, on the assumption that, initiation of crack propagation of a piping materials occurs when the crack tip strain field reaches "the local fracture strain", following two major issues are discussed ; 1) The relationship between the critical value of J-integral($J_{IC}$) and the local fracture strain (${\varepsilon}_c$) in uniaxial tensile test in the region of maximum reduction area was described. 2) To proved the validity of above relations a series of tests were performed under various temperature and on the different piping materials.materials.

  • This paper investigates the effects of T-stress and plastic hardening mismatch on the interfacial crack-tip stress field via finite element analyses. Plane strain elastic-plastic crack-tip fields are modeled with both MBL formulation and a full SEC specimen under pure bending. Modified Prandtl slip line fields illustrate the effects of T-stress on crack-tip constraint in homogeneous material. Compressive T-stress substantially reduces the interfacial crack-tip constraint, but increases the J-contribution by lower hardening material, J$\_$L/. For bimaterials with two elastic-plastic materials, increasing plastic hardening mismatch increases both crack-tip stress constraint in the lower hardening material and J$\_$L/. The fracture toughness for bimaterial joints would consequently be much lower than that of lower hardening homogeneous material. The implication of unbalanced J-integral in bimaterials is also discussed.

  • This paper provides the fully plastic J solutions for circumferential cracked pipes with inner, semi- elliptical surface cracks, subject to internal pressure and global bending. Solutions are given in the form of two different approaches, the GEF/EPRl approach and the reference stress approach. For the GE/EPRl approach, the plastic influence functions for fully plastic J are tabulated based on extensive 3-D FE calculations using the Ramberg-Osgood (R-O) materials, covering a wide range of pipe and crack geometries. The developed GEf/EPRl-type fully plastic J estimation equations are then re-formulated using the concept of the reference stress approach for wider applications. Based on the FE results, optimized reference load solutions for the definition of the reference stress are found for internal pressure and for global bending. Advantages of the reference stress based approach over the GE/EPRl-type approach are fully discussed. Validation of the proposed reference stress based J estimation equations will be given in Part II, based on 3-D elastic-plastic or elastic creep FE results using typical tensile properties of stainless steels and generalized creep- deformation behaviours.

  • Several nuclear power plants reported that they often found the combination cracks, which consist of longitudinal and circumferential cracks in the tubes. For the burst pressure of a tube with a single longitudinal or circumferential crack several experimental equations have been proposed in published literatures. But for the combination crack appropriate fracture criterion has not been proposed yet. In this study the burst pressures of a tube with a longitudinal crack or a T-type combination crack consisting of longitudinal and circumferential cracks were obtained experimentally and analytically. Fracture parameters such as crack opening angle (COA) were investigated by using elastic plastic analysis. Also the burst pressure far a T-type combination crack located near a tubesheet was considered to develop a length-based criterion. Because most of the axial, circumferential or combination cracks initiate in roll transition zone near the tubesheet.

  • This paper deals with the three-dimensional finite element analysis of failure behavior of UHPFRC I-beam under monotonic load. Different from the constitutive law of normal and high strength concrete, an elastic-plastic fracture model that considers the tensile strain hardening is proposed to describe the material properties of UHPFRC. A multi-directional fixed crack criterion with tensile strain hardening is defined in the tensile region, and Drucker-Prager criterion with an associated flow rule is adopted in the compressive region. The influence of span, prestressing force and section on the behavior of UHPFRC I-beam are investigated. The comparison of the numerical results with the test results indicates a good agreement.

  • The method of JSME S001-83 and ASTM E813-87 have been adapted for evaluation of the elastic-plastic fracture toughness J sub(IC) of SB41 steel. This SB41 steel have the characteristics of low-stength CT specimens. The test results obtained have been considered and compared on the basis of resulted data from two kinds of methods(JSME S001-83, ASTM E813-87) and two kinds of specimen configurations(smooth, side-grooved). On the basis of results from consideration and comparison, the difficulties for its application were presented in case when the standard ASTM E813-87 method was employed for the measurement of J sub(IC) in SB41 steel. A modified method was applied for measuring J sub(IC) in SB41 steel that it used the blunting line real-measured by experiment instead of the standard blunting line theoretically determined, and the result from that procedure was analyzed and the usefulness of that method was examined and considered.

  • Fracture resistance (J-R) curves, which are used for elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analyses, decreased under tension-compression loading condition. This phenomenon was proved by several former researches, but the causes have not been clear yet. The objective of this paper is to investigate the cause of this phenomenon. On the basis of fracture resistance curve test results, strain hardening hypothesis, stress redistribution hypothesis and crack opening hypothesis were built. In this study, hardness tests, Automated Ball Indentation(ABI) tests, theoretical stress field analyses, and crack opening analyses were performed to prove the hypotheses. From this study, strain-hardening of material, generation of tensile residual stress at crack tip, and crack opening effects are proved as the causes of the decrease hypothesis.
