The objective of this study is to evaluate elastic modulus of bridge-axis direction for optimum structure system in the cable-stayed bridge design. In numerical example of this study, a slight change in axis direction elastic modulus causes major modifications of the bridge characteristics when it is $1\times10^4$ tonf/m/bearing or less. Therefore, the elastic modulus was set at this lower limit of $1\times10^4$ tonf/m/bearing where the strength of the entire bridge system is still determined by girder strength and the entire system is insensitive to variations in elastic modulus. Besides, cable-stayed bridge with freely supported girders have slightly longer vibration periods in the horizontal direction for earthquake forces.
The aim of this paper is to present the modulus of elasticity of $E_L$, $E_R$, $E_T$ along three principal axis of softwood dimension lumber by nondestructive method. Ultrasonic measurement was carried out on defect free wood samples taken by the Japanese Larch, SPF (spruce-pine-fir) and Hem-fir $2{\times}4s$. The ultrasound velocities were measured to calculate young's moduli and it was derived elastic constants for each wood samples using the ultrasound velocities and densities of wood. From the test, $E_L$ was much greater than $E_R$ and $E_T$. $E_R/E_T$ ratios were about 1.3. The high density wood had high young's moduli in three principal axis and the difference in young's moduli between species was greater in transverse direction than longitudinal direction. The anisotropy of the lumber was presented through the calculated elastic moduli and compliances matrix in diagonal term were determined by inverting the stiffness matrix.

The failure mechanism of a hollow bridge deck which is made of glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) is investigated using both experiments and analysis. While the load-displacement behavior of the deck in the transverse direction shows a strong nonlinearity even in its initial response with relatively small magnitude of loads. In order to imporve the structural behavior of the deck in the transverse direction, we suggested that the empty space of the bridge deck is filled with a foam and investigated experimentally the static behavior of the orthotropic bridge deck which is made from GFRP and polyurethane foam. It is found that although the elastic modulus of the foam compared to that of the GFRP is about the order of $10^{-3}$, the structural behaviors in the weak axis such as nominal strength, stiffness, etc. are greatly improved. Owing to the low mass density of the foam used in this study, the bridge deck is still light enough with the improved structural properties.

A numerical analysis of cable-stayed bridge is conducted to determine optimum longitudinal modulus of elasticity which represents the boundary condition between the tower and main girder. The effect of longitudinal modulus of elasticity is investigated for different loading condition (live load, wind load, seismic load), respectively. There are significant changes in the member forces as variations of longitudinal modulus of elasticity, such as, $k_h$=e=100tonf/m/bearing (live load), $k_h$=e=1000tonf/m/bearing (seismic load), However, the wind loads do not affect member forces. The optimum longitudinal modulus of elasticity is determined from considering minimum member forces in the numerical analysis results.
The bi-material elastic system consisting of the circular hollow cylinder and the infinite elastic medium surrounding this cylinder is considered and it is assumed that on the inner free face of the cylinder a point-located axisymmetric time harmonic force, with respect to the cylinder's axis and which is uniformly distributed in the circumferential direction, acts. The shear-spring type imperfect contact conditions on the interface between the constituents are satisfied. The mathematical formulation of the problem is made within the scope of the exact equations of linear elastodynamics. The focus is on the frequency-response of the interface normal and shear stresses and the influence of the problem parameters, such as the ratio of modulus of elasticity, the ratio of the cylinder thickness to the cylinder radius, and the shear-spring type parameter which characterizes the degree of the contact imperfectness, on these responses. Corresponding numerical results are presented and discussed. In particular, it is established that the character of the influence of the contact imperfection on the frequency response of the interface stresses depends on the values of the vibration frequency of the external forces.
This paper studies the forced vibration of the hydro-elastic system consisting of the anisotropic (orthotropic) plate, compressible viscous fluid and rigid wall within the scope of the exact equations and relations of elastodynamics for anisotropic bodies for describing of the plate motion, and with utilizing the linearized exact Navier-Stokes equations for describing of the fluid flow. For solution of the corresponding boundary value problem it is employed time-harmonic presentation of the sought values with respect to time and the Fourier transform with respect to the space coordinate on the coordinate axis directed along the plate length. Numerical results on the pressure acting on the interface plane between the plate and fluid are presented and discussed. The main aim in this discussion is focused on the study of the influence of the plate material anisotropy on the frequency response of the mentioned pressure. In particular, it is established that under fixed values of the shear modulus of the plate material a decrease in the values of the modulus of elasticity of the plate material in the direction of plate length causes to increase of the absolute values of the interface pressure. The numerical results are presented not only for the viscous fluid case but also for the inviscid fluid case.

In this paper, a scheme to evaluate the response variability for functionally graded material (FGM) beam with varying sectional area is presented. The randomness is assumed to appear in a spatial domain along the beam axis in the elastic modulus. The functionally graded material categorized as composite materials, however without the drawbacks of delamination and occurrence of cracks due to abrupt change in material properties between layers in the conventional composite materials. The functionally graded material is produced by the gradual solidification through thickness direction, which endows continuous variation of material properties, which makes this material performs in a smooth way. However, due to difficulties in tailoring the gradients, to have uncertainty in material properties is unavoidable. The elastic modulus at the center section is assumed to be random in the spatial domain along the beam axis. Introducing random variables, defined in terms of stochastic integration, the first and second moments of responses are evaluated. The proposed scheme is verified by using the Monte Carlo simulation based on the random samples generated employing the spectral representation scheme. The response variability as a function of correlation distance, the effects of material and geometrical parameters on the response variability are investigated in detail. The efficiency of the proposed scheme is also addressed by comparing the analysis time of the proposed scheme and MCS.

The deformation mechanism of hexagonal close-packed materials is quite complicate including slips and twins. A deformation mechanism, which accounts for both slip and twinning, was investigated for polycrystalline hop materials. The model was developed in a finite element polycrystal model formulated with initial strain method where the stiffness matrix in FEM is based on the elastic modulus. We predicted numerically the texture of Mg alloy(AZ31B) sheet by using FEM based on crystal plasticity theory. Also, we introduced the recrystallized texture employed the maximum energy release theory after rolling. From the numerical study, it was clarified that the shrink twin could not be the main mechanism for shortening of c-axis, because the lattice rotation due to twin rejects fur c-axis to become parallel to ND(normal direction of plate). It was showed that the deformation texture with the pyramidal slip gives the ring type pole figure having hole in the center.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of various occlusal loading sites and directions on the stress distribution of the cervical composite resin restorations of maxillary second premolar, using 3 dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) analysis. Extracted maxillary second premolar was scanned serially with Micro-CT (SkyScan1072; SkyScan, Aartselaar, Belgium). The 3D images were processed by 3D-DOCTOR (Able Software Co., Lexington, MA, USA). HyperMesh (Altair Engineering. Inc., Troy, USA) and ANSYS (Swanson Analysis Systems. Inc., Houston, USA) was used to mesh and analyze 3D FE model. Notch shaped cavity was filled with hybrid (Z100, 3M Dental Products, St. Paul, MN, USA) or flowable resin (Tetric Flow, Viva dent Ets., FL-9494-Schaan, Liechtenstein) and each restoration was simulated with adhesive layer thickness ($40{\mu}m$). A static load of 200 N was applied on the three points of the buccal incline of the palatal cusp and oriented in $20^{\circ}$ increments, from vertical (long axis of the tooth) to oblique $40^{\circ}$ direction towards the buccal. The maximum principal stresses in the occlusal and cervical cavosurface margin and vertical section of buccal surfaces of notch-shaped class V cavity were analyzed using ANSYS. As the angle of loading direction increased, tensile stress increased. Loading site had little effect on it. Under same loading condition. Tetric Flow showed relatively lower stress than Z100 overall, except both point angles. Loading direction and the elastic modulus of restorative material seem to be important factor on the cervical restoration.
