  • Using the ultrasonic interferometry on the single crystal MgO-periclase, adiabatic bulk moduli were determined to be 163.2 GPa and 162.6 GPa from (100) and (110) lattice plane measurements, respectively. Density was measured on polycrystalline MgO by the X-ray diffraction technique. Results from this study were compared with the previously reported values. Further, the present results were converted to the isothermal bulk moduli and, then compared with the published data available including the energy dispersive X-ray diffraction result which was performed on the same single crystal MgO. The principle and techniques ultrasonic interferometry were introduced too.

  • An inverse self-iterative procedure is developed to estimate layer moduli and stresses in cement concrete pavement systems from the falling weight deflectometer deflection basins. The existing concrete pavement highways are analyzed using coupled analysis procedure of finite element and layer elastic theory for models obtained through factorial design, from which the characteristics of deflection basins are studied and the empirical equations are proposed for the estimation of layer moduli. The empirical equations are used to assume initial moduli, and the relations between the rate of change of moduli and deflections are used in the self-iterative procedure to ensure accuracy of moduli. The developed computer program of this procedure is verified through various numerical model tests.

  • The propagation of coherent time-harmonic elastic L-and SV-waves is studied in a medium with random distribution of cylindrical inclusions. The purpose of the research is to characterize the dynamic elastic moduli and the attenuation properties of fiber-reinforced composite materials. The cylindes representing the fibers are assumed to be distributed in parallel with each other and the direction of incident waves are normal to the cylinder axes. A multiple scattering formula using the single scattering coefficients in conjunction with the Lax's quasicrystalline approximation is derived from which the dispersion relation for such medium is obtained. In order to formulate the multiple scattering interaction between cylinders, the pair correlation functions are generated by the Monte Carlo simulation technique. From the numerically evaluated complex wavenumbers, the propagation speed of the average wave, the coherent attenuation and the effective elastic moduli are presented as functions of frequency and fiber volume fraction.

  • The elastic moduli or fracture strengths of multi-layered film (SiO$_2$/po1y-Si/SiN/SiO$_2$, 2.77 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thick), CVD diamond film (1.6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thick), SiO$_2$ film (1.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thick) and SiN film (0.43 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thick) made for the membrane of ink-jet printer head were measured with cantilever beam bending method using nanoindenter after fabricating in the form of micro cantilever beam (${\mu}$-CLB). And the elastic moduli of ${\mu}$-CLB of SiO$_2$ film and SiN film were compared with the value of each film on silicon substrate determined with nanoindentation method. The results showed that the modulus and strength of multi-layered film decrease from 68.08 ㎬ and 2.495 ㎬ to 56.53 ㎬ and 1.834 ㎬, respectively as the width of CLB increases from 18.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ to 58.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$. And the elastic moduli of SiO$_2$ and SiN films measured with ${\mu}$-CLB bending method are 68.16 ㎬ and 215.45 ㎬, respectively and the elastic moduli of these films on silicon substrate measured with nanoindentation method are 98.78 ㎬ and 219.38 ㎬, respectively. These results show that with ${\mu}$-CLB bending technique, moduli can be measured to within 2%.

  • A multiscale modeling scheme that addresses the influence of the nanoparticle size in nanocomposites consisting of nano-sized spherical particles embedded in a polymer matrix is presented. A micromechanics-based constitutive model for nanoparticle-reinforced polymer composites is derived by incorporating the Eshelby tensor considering the interface effects (Duan et al. 2005a) into the ensemble-volume average method (Ju and Chen 1994). A numerical investigation is carried out to validate the proposed micromechanics-based constitutive model, and a parametric study on the interface moduli is conducted to investigate the effect of interface moduli on the overall behavior of the composites. In addition, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed to determine the mechanical properties of the nanoparticles and polymer. Finally, the overall elastic moduli of the nanoparticle-reinforced polymer composites are estimated using the proposed multiscale approach combining the ensemble-volume average method and the MD simulation. The predictive capability of the proposed multiscale approach has been demonstrated through the multiscale numerical simulations.

  • Fault breccia, produced by fracturing and comminution of host rock during fault activity, is a common component within fault cores. Fault breccia may display a preferred orientationin accordance with the sense of motion on the fault. Here we use a numerical analysis technique to study the effects of the distribution and content of breccia in fault core on the elastic moduli. The analytical models are grouped into those in which breccias display a preferred orientation within fault core and those in which breccias are randomly oriented. The breccia compositions considered here are granite and shale, and the breccia contents are 10 wt%, 20 wt%, and 30 wt%. Our results show that for all the cases considered, differences in the deformation moduli fall within the range 0.1%~1.1% and differences in the elastic moduli fall within the range 0.02~0.4 MPa. Thus, the distribution and content of fault breccia have almost no effect on the elastic moduli.

  • A theoretical study of the electronic structures of $TiC_{1-x}$ and $Ti_{1-x}W_xC$ (x = 0, 0.25) is presented. The density of states and crystal orbital overlap population calculations were used to interpret variations of elastic properties induced by carbon vacancies and alloying substitutions. Our results show why the introduction of vacancies into TiC reduces bulk moduli, while W substitution at a Ti site increases the elastic modulus. The effect of the point defects on the bonding in TiC is investigated by means of extended Huckel tight-binding band calculations.

  • When crystalline rocks are heated, thermal stress is induced by the differences in thermal expansion of the mineral composition and its orientation. In this study, high temperature uniaxial compressive tests were carried out for Iksan and Hwangdeung granites to study the deformation and failure behavior due to thermal loading. Compressive and tensile strength of Hwangdeung granite for 20$0^{\circ}C$ decreased to 80% and 82% of the room temperature strength, and those of Iksan granite decreased to 90% and 92% for 20$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. Elastic moduli of both granites were decreased sharply at the stress level of 80% of ultimate failure strength. Elastic moduli of both granites by variation of temperature at 50% of ultimate failure strength was decreased as almost linearly.

  • An analytical model has been developed to predict the elastic properties of a filled resin reinforced by chopped fibers, a three-phase composite such as a filled sheet molding compound(SMC). In the model the matrix material and fillers form an effective matrix. The effective matrix is then considered to be reinforced with long fibers lying in the sheet plane but randomly oriented in the plane. Expressions for the resulting transversely isotropic composite properties are explicitly presented. Using this model, the Young's and shear moduli are calculated for the SMC sample with filler weight fraction of 35% and fiber content of 30%. The same properties are also determined experimentally. The agreement between the calculated and measured elastic moduli is found to be very good for the in-plane properties. However, the out-of-plane properties show a large difference because the effect of voids is not taken into account in the model.
