  • In the present paper we report the results of a study into Friction Stir Welds (FSWs) made in 13 mm-thick 12%-Cr steel plates. Based on residual strains obtained by diffraction techniques, eigenstrain analysis was performed using the Eigenstrain Reconstruction Method (ERM), which is a novel methodology for the reconstruction of full-field residual strain and stress distributions within engineering components. Significant eigenstrain distributions were found at around Thermo-Mechanically Affected Zone (TMAZ) where the most severe plastic deformation was occurred. Microstructure analysis was used to elucidate this phenomenon showing that the grain structure in TMAZ was bent and not successfully recrystallised, resulting in severe deformation behaviour. The reconstructed residual strain distributions by the ERM agree well with the experimental results. It was found that the approach based on theory of eigenstrain is a powerful basis for reconstructing the full-field residual strain/stress distributions in engineering components and structures.

  • A slightly curved crack with an eigenstrain is considered. Solutions for a slightly curved crack in a linear isotropic material under asymptotic loading as well as for a slightly curved crack in a linear isotropic material with a concentrated force are obtained from perturbation analyses, which are accurate to the first order of the parameter representing the non-straightness. Stress intensity factors for a slightly curved crack with an eigenstrain are obtained from the perturbation solutions by using a body force analogy. Particular attention is given to the crack path stability under mode I loading. A new parameter of crack path stability is proposed for a crack with an eigenstrain. The path stability of a crack with steady state growth in a transforming material and a ferroelectric material is examined.

  • This study analyzes stress intensity factors for a number of periodic edge cracks in a semiinfinite medium subjected to a far field uniform applied load along with a distribution of eigenstrain. The eigenstrain is considered to be distributed arbitrarily over a region of finite depth extending from the free surface. The cracks are represented by a continuous distribution of edge dislocations. Using the complex potential functions of the edge dislocations, a simple as well as effective method is developed to calculate the stress intensity factor for the edge cracks. The method is employed to obtain the numerical results of the stress intensity factor for different distributions of eigenstrain. Moreover, the effect of crack spacing and the intensity of the normalized eigenstress on the stress intensity factor are investigated in details. The results of the present study reveal that the stress intensity factor of the periodic edge cracks is significantly influenced by the magnitude as well as distribution of the eigenstrain within the finite depth. The eigenstrains that induce compressive stresses at and near the free surface of the semi-infinite medium reduce the stress intensity factor that, in turn, contributes to the toughening of the material.

  • This paper establish a high concentration ratio approximation of linear elastic properties of materials with periodic microstructure with cubic inclusions. The approximation is derived using first few terms of power series expansion of the solution of the equivalent eigenstrain problem with a homogeneous eigenstrain approximation. Viability of the approximation at high concentration ratios is proved by comparison with a numerical solution of the homogenization problem. To this end some theoretical result of symmetry properties of the homogenization problem are given. Using these results efficient numerical computation on a reduced computational domain is presented.

  • In the present work, a formula for plate deformation produced by line heating, in terms of process parameters such as heat input and plate dimensions, is developed analytically using an eigenstrain concept. The residual deformation that was due to thermal process was depends on the magnitude and region of plastic strains at heating zone. The magnitude of plastic strains was determined by disk model and its region was calculated using the Rosenthal"s solution. The vertical displacement of the plate was analyzed by using an infinite laminated plate theory to consider a cuboidal inclusion with an eigenstrain. Comparison of the calculated results and experimental data shows the accuracy and validity of proposed method.thod.

  • Measurement of welding residual stresses is one of important tasks to assess the structural integrity of welded structures. For operating components, especially, nondestructive techniques are required. By now, authors have proposed a new residual stress evaluation method, the bead flush method, where residual stresses are calculated from eigenstrain distribution determined by surface removal of reinforcement. In this paper, a brief description of the bead flush method is given and its utility and problem to be overcome are discussed. And also stabilization method of solution set of eigenstrain in inverse analysis is proposed.

  • The problems of welding distortion in a welded structures are major concern in heavy industry. Weld-induced angular distortion's formula, composed weld parameter such as heat input and plate thickness, is developed analytically by the use of an elliptic cylindrical inclusion with an eigenstrain in an infinite laminated plate theory. The source of angular distortion in weldments is the plastic strains, which are caused by non-uniform temperature gradient. The distributions of the plastic strain corresponding eigenstrain are assumed by the use of Rosenthal's solution expressing thermal history. Comparison of calculated results with experimental data shows the accuracy and validity of the proposed method.

  • In this study, a formula for thermal processing induced plate deformations, in terms of process parameters such as heat input and plate thickness, is developed analytically using an infinite laminated plate theory to consider cuboidal inclusion with an eigenstrains. When a plate has arbitrary heating lines, complex deformed shape of plate was calculated by the method estimating plate deformation proposed by this study. To make a curved surface of the ship hull, the line heating method is mainly used. Application in automatization of line heating was deliberate by using proposed method.

  • The theoretical modeling to predict the modulus of elasticity by the shape memory effect of dispersed particles in a metal matrix composite was studied. The modeling approach is based on the Eshelbys equivalent inclusion method and Mori-Tanakas mean field theory. The calculation was performed on the TiNi particle dispersed Al metal matrix composites(PDMMC) with varying volume fractions and prestrains of the particle. It was found that the prestrain has no effect on the Yonugs modulus of PDMMC but the volume fraction does affects it. This approach has an advantage of definite control of Youngs modulus in PDMMCs.

  • Line heating is an effective and economical process for forming flat metal plates into three-dimensional shapes for plating of ships. Because the nature of the line heating process is a transient thermal process, followed by a thermo elastic plastic stress field, predicting deformed shapes of plate is very difficult and complex problem. In this paper, neural network model o3r solving the inverse problem of metal forming is proposed. The backpropagation neural network systems for determining line-heating positions from object shape of plate are reported in this paper. Two cases of the network are constructed-the first case has 18 lines which have different positions and directions and the second case has 10 parallel heating lines. The input data are vertical displacements of plate and the output data are selected heating lines. The train sets of neural network are obtained by using an analytical solution that predicts plate deformations in line heating process. This method shows the feasibility that the neural network can be used to determine the heating-line positions in line heating process.
