  • Fire hazards in an apartment building that represents the average households in Korean were investigated by conducting a full-scale experiment. This experiment attempts to analyze fire hazards using materials, and furnishings common to Korean housing stock. Experimental results are compared to the predictions of the C-FAST and smoke transport computer model. Comparisons between experimental data and C-FAST data are performed only to a living-room fire. Flashover occurred at approximately 380 seconds in a fire experinent, and at approximately 420 seconds in Zone-Model. Based on all of data between experimental data between experimental data and Zone-Model data, it is concluded that the safe egress time is at least 250 seconds.

  • Although fire incidents occur frequently in factory buildings, the focus has primarily been on property damage rather than human casualties. In this study, we conducted an analysis of RSET(Required Safe Egress Time) variation by examining the relocation of workbenchs using evacuation simulations. The results demonstrated that a simple change in workbench placement led to different RSET and variations in the feasibility of evacuation. Specifically, arranging workbenchs in a vertical configuration reduced travel time for workers and minimized total evacuation time. The hybrid layout of "vertical-horizontal" exhibited the shortest RSET, while the "horizontal-vertical" configuration resulted in the longest RSET. These research findings are significant as they provide practical alternatives to decrease RSET in small-scale factories where additional investments beyond essential safety equipment may pose challenges due to budget constraints. However, it is important to note that this study solely focused on comparing RSET while controlling for all other factors, without considering real-life fire simulations. Therefore, further research is necessary to integrate fire simulations and conduct comprehensive assessments of evacuation safety.

  • Fire simulation was carried out for an enclosure with three doorways of $20{\times}10{\times}3m^3$ and a cleanroom of $44{\times}48{\times}10m^3$, to suggest appropriate grid size in fire simulations by using of FDS for large scale buildings. The variations of temperature and visibility with time were compared for the x and y direction grid sizes of 0.1~1.0 m (aspect ratios 0.5~5.0), fixing the z direction grid size 0.2 m. The results showed that the grid sizes 0.5 m (aspect ratio 2.5) or smaller are appropriate among the grid sizes tested, whereas 1.0 m is not acceptable. It was confirmed that estimate of the available safe egress time requires a great care due to fluctuations in temperature, visibility, etc., and further investigations on the grid size when selecting a large grid size inevitable, and on the aspect ratios for a larger grid are in need.

  • Accurate predictions of the activation time for smoke detectors using a fire simulation is are required to ensure the reliability of the RSET (Required Safe Egress Time) calculation in the process of PBD (Performance-Based Design). The objective of this study was to enhance the accuracy of input parameters for the numerical models of smoke detector based on the FDS. To this end, a Fire Detector Evaluator (FDE) developed in previous studies was improved. The uniformities of flow and smoke inside the FDE were improved and accurate measurements of the obscuration per meter (OPM) related to detector operation were also performed through a decrease in the forward scattering of smoke particles. The input parameters using the improved FDE showed a significant difference from the previous FDE quantitatively. In particular, a larger difference was found in a photoelectric detector compared to an ionization detector. Considering that the operating conditions of smoke detectors are affected by the detector type, combustibles, smoke particulars, and color, the database (DB) on the input parameters for various detectors and combustibles should be built to improve the reliability of PBD in future studies.

  • Recently commercial egress softwares are frequently used for the risk assessment. The estimation of evacuation time is an important procedure and the outflow coefficient in a bottleneck becomes the crucial factor for design of emergency planning. This paper compares the outflow coefficient of measurement with those of softwares in the bottlenecks of subway stations where masses of people movement is observed. Stairway and turnstile are the 2 bottleneck points along escape pathway. For the escape simulation it is recommended that 2 different modes be used in the programs for 2 kinds of bottleneck. The results of the comparison makes a big difference among them and some of differences can be reduced by correct design of input data. In conclusion the results of simulation should be examined thoroughly by procedure of comparisons with other results.

  • In this study, an analytical evaluation of evacuation safety in typical road tunnels was conducted. The Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) was employed to perform fire simulations with varying fire sizes to determine the allowable evacuation time in road tunnels. Additionally, evacuation simulations were performed using Pathfinder, considering the width of barrier doors and the spacing of evacuation passageways, to calculate the required evacuation time. A comparison between the allowable and required evacuation times was conducted to assess the impact of fire size, passageway spacing, and barrier door width on tunnel evacuation safety. The results from the fire and evacuation simulations indicated that an increase in fire size and passageway spacing, along with a decrease in door width, resulted in an increase in the number of casualties. Conversely, increasing the barrier door width to more than 1.2meters led to a reduction in casualties as passageway spacing increased.

  • The pressurized smoke control system is important for fire safety in building because it is directly concerned with egress time of people. Even though the damper plays an essential role in the pressurized smoke control system, the phenomena of backflow smoke occurs for a certain the damper position. The research for a position of damper effects on distribution of air flow at the fire door is not performed. In this study, numerical simulation using FDS 5.5 was carried out to analyze the effect of the position of damper on flow distribution at the fire door. To simulate real situation, effects of opening and closing of fire door was considered. As a result, when HRR was between 200 kW and 400 kW, in the case which the damper was on the opposite wall of the fire door, the back flow to the vestibules was large compared to the two other cases of damper position. But when HRR was above 400 kW, Effect on damper position was not occurred.

  • Apartment buildings are becoming taller and more densely populated with the advancements in science and the development of cities, Consequently, various amenities and safety facilities are being developed to improve the quality of life for residents. However, according to statistics, the number of casualties in apartments accounts for a high proportion of accidents, and the leading cause of the casualties is smoke emitted from fires while sleeping at night. Although it is best to install separate indoor facilities in apartments to minimize smoke damages to occupants, it is useful to minimize the smoke damages by utilizing the installed facilities while reducing the financial burden of occupants. Based on the review, the heat exchanger ventilation system and the kitchen collective exhaust system were selected, and the feasibility of these systems was verified through fire simulation. From the verification results, the available safe egress time improved by 27, 30, and 35 s on the 25th, 35th, 50th floors, respectively.

  • This study is intended to examine the effect of photoluminescent exit signs in the event of failure of both the power to the lighting and illuminated exit sign. To achieve the purpose, the test house was exhibited in Fire EXPO '05. 520 visitors were examined from May 26-29, 2005. The results of this study are as follows; The evacuation from buildings in dark conditions showed that $70\%$ of men and $72\%$ of women were crawled along the wall. Meanwhile, $88\%$ of men and $83\%$ of women were evacuated with ordinary walking in photoluminescent exit signs. The egress time was shortened from 53 seconds to 64 seconds in accordance with age, height and visual power. The photoluminescent exit signs located on public buildings floors will aid in evacuation from buildings in the event of failure of the power to the lightings and illuminated exit signs.
