  • Recently, the number of elderly people in the rural area of Korea has increased remarkably and their food security has become deteriorated mainly due to the low economic status. To investigate the food security for the elderly people, relevant data were obtained by offering questionnaire to the rural elderly people who were engaging in traditional agricultural production for daily foods. The subjects of 1870 were collected in 9 provinces according to PPS(Probability Proportional to Size). Questionnaire contained the items of dietary habit, food cultivation, Production and Preservation, and the suey was conducted by trained interviewers. SAS (ver 8.1) was used for statistical analyses in which Chi-square tests and General Linear Models were made. Family of the elderly people was $45.4\%$ of the total and the characteristics of elderly families were that age of male head was 82.1 years and that of female was 67.7 years, and that $68.8\%$ of elderly women were working for family income or pocket money. The elderly families' food cultivation state was surveyed and they were pepper$(59.1\%)$, chinese cabbage$(61.91\%)$, and sesame$(48.6\%)$ for their own consumption. But, bean sprout$(6.5\%)$, tofu$(7.7\%)$ and egg$(5.1\%)$ showed low rate of cultivation for the family. The rate of cultivating chinese cabbage$(61.9\%)$, and sesame$(48.6\%)$ was significantly higher than that of middle aged family. At the status of fermented food production for the elderly family, Doenjang$(87.4\%)$ and Gochujang$(86.3\%)$ Kanjang$(84.0\%)$ Kimchi$(92.9\%)$ Jangachi$(27.6\%)$ and Meju$(91.61\%)$maintained higher rate than that of middle aged families' Food preservation of elderly families was low and there are just jam$(5.3\%)$ and bottled products$(1.4\%)$. A little higher rate was observed lot the preserved food such as alcohol$(9.9\%)$ and powder$(9.8\%)$. For the elderly family the score of food cultivation was 4.08/12 points and that of food preservation was 0.62/12 points. The score of fermented food production for elderly family was 10.24/12 points which was significantly different from that of middle aged family (9.58/12 points, p<0.001). This result suggests that for the elderly people food with more protein is needed for production.

  • Eggs development and early life history of the endangered Korean dwarf loach, Kichulchoia brevifasciata (Teleostei: Cobitidae) was investigated to provide basic information regarding biological characteristics and restoration. Adult fish specimens were sampled using a spoon net at Geurnsan-myeon, Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea from June to July 2011. Since, spawning characteristics were analyzed, and females were induced to spawn by injecting Ovaprim (0.5 mL/kg) and their eggs were artificially fertilized with sperms by the dry method in the laboratory. Total length of mature female were 46~76 mm with GSI $9.6{\pm}3.77%$, and total length of mature male was 42~52 mm with GSI $3.5{\pm}1.04%$. Sex ratio (♂/♀) was 0.10, and there were no secondary sexual characteristics. The number of mature eggs was averaged $60{\pm}28.7$ per female. The lemon yellow eggs were slightly adhesive $1.46{\pm}0.07mm$ in diameter. The embryo hatched approximately 66 h after fertilization at $25^{\circ}C$, and the hatched larvae were averaged $5.5{\pm}0.07mm$ in total length (TL). At 6 days after hatching, the larvae averaged $9.0{\pm}0.29mm$(TL) and their yolk sac was completely absorbed. At 17 days after hatching, they entered the juvenile stage and reached $12.6{\pm}0.24mm$ (TL). At 80 days after hatching, the band patterns and external form of the juveniles were similar to those of adults, and they averaged $33.0{\pm}2.19mm$(TL).

  • The experiments were carried out to investigate the biocontrol potential of Lysobacter capsici YS1215 on root-knot nematode and to characterize its lytic enzyme activities. L. capsici YS1215 showed chitinase and gelatinase activities on the medium containing 0.5% chitin or 0.5% gelatin as substrates. Cell growth of L. capsici YS1215 was highest at 6 days, and the highest activities of chitinase (4.0 unit $ml^{-1}$) and gelatinase (7.43 unit $ml^{-1}$) were observed on 3 and 5 days after incubation, respectively. To investigate the effect of L. capsici YS1215 on tomato growth and nematode infection, the plants in pot trial were treated with bacterial culture (BC), half of bacterial culture (HBC), only bacterial medium (BM), tap water (TW) and commercial nematicide (CN). HBC treatd plants showed the higher shoot fresh weight and dry weight on $5^{th}$week after incubation while BM, HBC and BC had consistently higher values than TW at $9^{th}$ week. HBC appeared to be the highest shoot fresh length at $9^{th}$ week. Both CN and BC showed lower number of egg mass, root gall, and population of juveniles in soil compared to BC, HBC, BM and TW. These results suggest that L. capsici YS1215 with its strong ability of lytic enzyme production can be one of the most significant candidates for biocontrol agents against root-knot nematodes.

  • An epidemiological survey on Metagonimus yokogawai infection was performed in the eastern coast area of Kangwon province. Formalin-ether concentration technique and Stoll's dilution egg counting method were employed to figure out the prevalence and intensity of M. yokogawai infection and eating habits of inhabitants with raw freshwater fish. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The prevalence rate of M. yokogawai infection was 6.6% among a total of 2, 357 examinees; 8.6% (115 out of 1, 345) in male and 4.0% (40 out of 1, 012) in female. 2. The prevalence rates were different by the streams where the examinees were residing: 17.8% along the area of Ohsip-cheon (stream), 11.8% along Maeup-cheon, 1.7% along Hwasang-cheon, 1.3% along Yeongok-cheon, 0.9% along Namdae-cheon, 0.9% along Sa-cheon and 0% in the other streams (Yongchon-cheon, Kangnung Namdae-cheon and Jusoo.cheon) in decreasing order. 3. By social strata, the positive rate was 8.0% (122 out of 1, 521) in general inhabitants and 3.9% (33 out of 836) in school children. 4. By the intensity of infection by means of EPG counts in feces; the light infection (less than 400/EPG) was 74.1%, moderate infection (401-1, 000/EPG) 17.3% and heavy infection (more than 1, 001/EPG) 8.6%. 5. Twelves out of 50 sweetfish (Plecoglossus altivelis) (24%) caught from the streams in eastern coast of Kangwon-Do were infected with metacercariae of M. yokogawai, and the number of larvae detected were 70.7 per 6sh in average. The metacercarial infection rates in fish were also different by the streams; 100% in Ohsip-cheon of Samcheok-Gun, 14.3% in Sa-cheon, 16.7% in Yeongokcheon of Myeongju-Gun and 0% in Namdae-cheon of Yangyang-Gun, respectively. 6. Six hundred ninety live (695) out of 1, 396 inhabitants and school children (49.8%) were experienced in eating raw freshwater fishes (Plecoglossus altivezis, Triboledon hakonensis, Coreoperca sp., Morose sp., Carassius sp. & Cyprinus sp. and Zacco platypus). The data were assayed with the questionnaire collected from the examinees. In summarizing the above results, it is known that the Ohsip-cheon area of Samcheok-Gun is highly infected region, and the other areas of Kangnung Namdae-cheon, Yeongok-cheon and Yangyang Namdae-cheon are very lowly infected or non-infected regions for M yokogawai infection.

  • The prevalence of human taeniasis has decreased in Korea. The stool egg positive proportion decreased from 1.9% in 1971 to 0% in 2004 in nationwide surveys. The neurocysticercosis (NCC) is also presumed to decrease. However, detailed information regarding the recent status of NCC in Korea is lacking. We retrospectively reviewed NCC cases from 1990 to 2016 at Asan Medical Center, a 2700-bed tertiary referral hospital in Korea. We identified patients based on clinical symptoms, brain imaging, pathology and serological assay. The cases were classified as parenchymal, extraparenchymal, and mixed NCC. Eighty-one patients were included in the analysis. The mean age was 54.5 years, and 79.0% were male. The number of NCC cases was highest from 1995 to 1999, and continuously decreased thereafter. Forty (49.4%) patients had parenchymal NCC, while 25 (30.9%) patients had extraparenchymal NCC, and 16 (19.8%) patients had mixed NCC. The seizure and headache were most common symptom of parenchymal NCC and extraparenchymal NCC respectively. Hydrocephalus was more common in extraparenchymal NCC, and patients with extraparenchymal NCC were more likely to require a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Cases of NCC are decreasing accordingly with human taeniasis and lesion location was the most important determinant of clinical presentation and outcome of NCC in Korea.

  • We surveyed branches of acacia trees distributed nationally in Korea to establish a common survey method that can be used by investigators to monitor for over-wintering Metcalfa pruinosa eggs. A total of 189 samples was examined, and the number of eggs on the surfaces of the branches, bases of thorns and bases of twigs was recored. When including samples in which no eggs were found at all investigation sites, none of the data followed the normal distribution. However, when samples in which no eggs were found at all sites were exclued, the density of eggs investigated at the thorn bases and twig bases followed the normal distribution. When the density of eggs was sorted based on the thickness of the branches on which they were found, these data did not follow the normal distribution. The density of M. pruinosa eggs at the thorn bases and twig bases was significantly higher than that on the branch surfaces, but there was no significant difference among branches of different thicknesses. Therefore, monitoring for M. pruinosa eggs at the thorn bases and twig bases of the nationally distributed acacia tree, irrespective of the thickness of the branches, will be able to increase the precision with which the density of this insect's eggs could be estimated. It is thus expected that this method will contribute to developing methods to better characterize the distribution and predict the occurrence of this.

  • This study surveyed the population ecology of Acheilognathus chankaensis (Pisces: Acheilognathinae) in the vicinity of the Churyeongcheon (Stream) and Seomjingang (River) in Jeonbuk, Korea, from February 2006 to May 2007. The survey found the habits mainly in the slow-flowing waters having sand, mud, and gravel bottoms. Age groups estimated by the standard length-frequency distribution of the population indicated that the one-year-olds were 30-46 mm long, the two-year-olds were 47-58 mm long, the three-year-olds were 59-68 mm long, and the four-year-olds were longer than 69 mm. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) and the ratio of ovipositor length/standard length were the highest in March (♀: 12.9%, ♂: 5.0%) and in April (46.3%), respectively. The ratio of mature egg diameters that were 1.6 mm was highest in May (13.2%). The comprehensive analysis of spawning characteristics showed that the spawning season was from March to June with water temperatures in 11.5-22.5℃, and the sex ratio of female:male was 1:1.13. The fecundity in the ovaries and the number of mature eggs were 318±174.5 (50~583) and 220±139.2 (50~406), respectively. The size of the mature eggs was 2.04±0.110 mm on the long axis and 1.55±0.100 mm on the short axis for the study period. Gut contents of A. chankaensis were mainly phytoplankton such as the genera Fragilaria, Synedra, Navicular, Cymbella (Bacillariophyceae), and Cosmarium (Chlorophyceae).

  • The populations of Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) cause serious economic damages in local apple orchards. However, there was no study to manage its populations with environment friendly tactics. Thus, this study was conducted to analyze its attraction effects of one of R. pedestris aggregation pheromone compounds, (E)-2-hexenyl (Z)-3hexenoate (E2HZ3H), to its parasitoids, Ooencyrtus nezarae (Ishii) and Gryon japonicum (Ashmead). This compound did not increase the number of these two parasitoids and change its spatial distribution. However, this compound could attract two parasitoids within limited distance. These results indicates that one compound of R. pedestris aggregation pheromone, E2HZ3H, could be a good candidate to manage R. pedestris populations in conditions that its populations locally occurs in apple orchards.

  • This study investigated the early life history of the Boleophthalmus pectinirostris living in the southern coastal Yeoja-man and compared the results with the same Gobiidae fishes. The brood stork used in the study were captured with bare hands in the tidal flats of Beolgyo-eup, Jeollanam-do, in June 2015. The amount of spawning was 411~11,688, and the eggs were short oval and the size was 1.40×0.72 mm. The time of hatched took 91 hours and 35 minutes at a water temperature of 25~27℃. Newly hatching larvae, the yolk sac had a total length of 3.02~3.31 (average 3.17±0.08, n=30) mm and did not eat rotifer. 4 days after hatching, the total length was 3.31~3.52 (3.43±0.07, n=30) mm, and as the mouth and anus opened, the fish transitioned to the preflexion larvae and fed. 14 days after hatching, the total length was 5.06~5.25 (5.16±0.06, n=30) mm, and the distal end of the vertebra was completely bent at 45° and the transitioned to the postflexion larvae. 41 days after hatching, the total length was 14.3~16.8 (15.4±0.85 mm, n=30), and the number of fins reached an integer of 5 first dorsal fins, 26~27 second dorsal fins, 24~27 anal fins, and 6 ventral fins, and the transitioned to the juveniles. As a result of the study, star-shaped melanophore were deposited from the front of the pectoral fin to the base of the caudal fin, which distinguished them in form from other postflexion larvae of Gobiidae fishes.
