In this study, the effects of tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) on ischemia/ reperfusion injury were investigated on isolated heart perfusion models. Hezrts were perfused with oxygenated Krebs-henseleit solution (pH 7.4, $37^{\cire}C$) on a Langendorff apparatus. After equilibration, isolated hearts were treated with TUDCA 100 and 200 $\mu\textrm{M}$ or vehicle (0.02% DMSO) for 10 min before the onset of ischemia in single treatment group. In 7 day pretreatment group. TUDCA 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight were given orally for 7 days before operation. After global ischemia (30 min), ischemic hearts were reperfused for 30 min. The physiological (i.e. heart rate, left ventricdular developed pressure, coronary flow, double product, time to contracture formation) and biochemical (lactate dehydrogenase; LDH) parameters were evaluated. In vehicle-treated group, time to contracture formation was 810 sec during ischemia, LVDP was 34.0 mmHg at the endpoint of reperfusion and LDH activity in total reperfusion effluent was 34.3 U/L. Single treatment with TUDCA did not change the postischemic recovery of cardiac function, LDH and time to contractur compared with ischemic control group. TUDCA pretreatment showed the tendency to decrease LDH release and to increase time to contracture and coronary flow. Our findings suggest that TUDCA does not ameliorate ischemia/reperfusion-reduced myocardial damage.
The effects of turning frequency of in-vessel composting on ammonia emissions during composting of separated solids from swine slurry/sawdust mixtures and performance of biofiltration using the chicken manure compost were investigated. Separated solids from swine manure amended with sawdust was composted in a 226 L laboratory-scale in-vessel reactors under various turning frequency and continuous airflow (0.6 L/min.kg.dm) for three weeks. Three laboratory-scale manure compost biofilters were built to treat effluent gas from the composting of separated solid from swine manure amened with sawdust process. These experiments were continued over a period of three weeks. The composting of separated solid swine manure amended with sawdust and manure compost biofiltration system were evaluated to determine the turning frequency type that would be adequate for the rate of decomposition and compost odour reduction. The compost odour cleaning was measured based on ammonia gas concentration before and after passing through the manure compost biofilter. The average ammonia odor reduction in the manure compost biofilter was 96.9 % at R1 (no turning), 99.4 % at R2(once a day turning) and 89.0 % at R3(twice a day turning), respectively. The efficiency of ammonia reduction was mainly influenced by the turning frequency.

In this study, DWTP Advisor developed from U.S. EPA was adapted for performance assessment in small water treatment plant and studied for improvement advice about the problem. From results of performance assessment, the ability of each major unit process meets to Peak Instantaneous Flow(PIF) as Type I (above 95% of PIF) in N WTP. But, outlet condition in the sedimentation basin are permitting the loss of solids from the basin and the lack of proper solids removal is degrading the performance in N WTP. From results of the hydraulic analysis using fluoride tracer, flow rate in sedimentation basin is rapidly more lower than upper. The Reynolds number, Re, and Froude number, Fr which are used to predict flow condition in sedimentation basin is calculated to be 3159.98 and $2.06{\times}10^{-7}$, respectively. There is possibility of occurrence of short-circuiting and turbulence. Also, the different type of effluent trough makes unstable flow in sedimentation basin and increases carry-overing of sedimented solids.
This study was performed to evaluate an applicability of the SMMCMAS system for reuse of the sewage from spa area and was operated to HLR(Hydraulic loading rate) of 211.3 to 126.8 $\ell$/㎥/d. The operating HRT(Hydraulic retention time) ranges were 2.5 to 1.5 hours. Conclusions are as follows; At the optimum HLR of 158.5 $\ell/\m^2$/d (HRT of 2.0 hours), the maximum BOD removal efficiency was 94% and the effluent BOD concentration was 1.1mg/$\ell$ in result. As the HLR was increased to 211.3 $\ell/\m^2$/d, BOD removal efficiency was decreased to 75% and BOD removal efficiency was also reduced to 74% at lower HLR of 126.8 $\ell/\m^2$/d. It shows that the maximum BOD removal efficiency occurs at an optimum HLR value and that the removal efficiency decreases when the HLR is either higher or lower than the optimum value. Sludge production rates were ranged 0.01 to 0.24gVSS/gBODrem/d and accomplished to 0.01gVSS/gBODrem/d at the optimum HLR of 158.5 $\ell/\m^2$/d.
The river water source of Saidabad Surface Water Treatment Plant at Dhaka, Bangladesh, is deteriorated too much to be treated by conventional treatment process due to excessive ammonia pollution. In order to improve the raw water quality before it enters into the main treatment chain, a pilot study was conducted for pre-treatment of the raw water. The objective is to investigate the rate of reduction of ammonia using the Meteor pilot, a biological pretreatment system, which is a laboratory scale Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor with a nominal volume of hundred liters, filled with 50 L of Meteor 660 media. The reduction of ammonia was quite significant on average 73%, while the reduction of COD was in a range from 20 to 60%. The Meteor pilot was able to treat and nitrify the raw water and produce an effluent that respects the guarantee of ammonia < $4.0mg\;NH_3-N/L$ when the raw water ammonia concentration was < $15mg\;NH_3-N/L$. The study identified operating parameters necessary to achieve the desired goal of adequate ammonia removal. The study results would benefit a range of systems across the country by providing guidance on the design and operation of a biological pre-treatment system for ammonia removal.
This study investigates the treatment of pigment wastewater using a sequential batch reactor (SBR) followed by dissolved ozone flotation-pressurized ozone oxidation treatement (DOF-$PO_2$). The process efficiency has been evaluated at the lab scale on the basis of water quality parameters. In addition, the effect of pure oxygen and air was investigated on the removal of COD, BOD, and TN in the SBR process. It was observed that under comparable conditions the removal efficiencies of these water quality parameters using pure oxygen and air were similar. The effect of the recycle rate was also investigated for its impact on the water quality parameters using different ozone dissolving pressures in a DOF process in order to optimise conditions. The results conclude that the use of an SBR and ozone contact by DOF-$PO_2$ is a highly effective treatment for pigment wastewater and aids in the achievement of effluent discharge criteria.

A down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) bioreactor was operated for the treatment of domestic wastewater. The Stover-Kincannon model was applied for kinetic evaluation of the reactor performance during the operational period. As a result, the coefficient of determination (R2) for straight lines of effluent concentration from the experimental data and from the predictive data of BOD5; NH4+-N; and TN were 0.9727; 0.9883; and 0.9934, respectively. The calculation of saturation value constant (Umax - g L-1 d-1) and maximum utilization rate constant (KB - g L-1 d-1) were 56.818 and 75.034 for BOD5; 2.960 and 4.713 for NH4+-N; 2.810 and 8.37 for TN, respectively. The study suggests that Stover-Kincannon model can be used for effective evaluation of kinetic removal of BOD5; NH4+-N; and TN from domestic wastewater treated in a DHS bioreactor.
Landfill waste decomposition generates a dark effluent named, leachate which is characterized by high organic matter content. To minimize these polluting effects, it becomes necessary to develop an effective landfill leachate treatment process. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of an innovative approach based on air stripping, anaerobic digestion (AD) and aerobic activated sludge treatment. A reduction of 80% of ammonia and an increase of carbon to nitrogen ratio to 25 were obtained, which is a suitable ratio for AD. This latter AD was performed in fixed bed reactor with progressive loading rate that reached 2 and 3.2 g COD/L/d for the raw and diluted leachate (1:2), respectively. The anaerobic treatment led to significant removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biogas production, especially for the diluted leachate. The COD removal was of 78% for the raw leachate and a biogas production of 4 L/d with 70% methane content. The use of the diluted leachate led to 81% of COD removal and 7 L/d biogas with 75% methane content. It allowed a removal of 77% COD and more than 97% of the organic compounds present in the initial leachate sample.
This study was carried to investigate the treatment characteristics of the phenol and catechol with an anaerobic fluidized bed reactor(AFBR) having a dimension of 9 cm i.d. and 1.25 m height. The reactor was operated at $35\pm 1\circ$C. The COD concentration of the effluent, the gas production rate and the composition of gas were measured to determine the performance of the AFBR as the hydraulic retention time(HRT) was decreased from 2 days to i day at 600 mg/l of the phenol and catechol concentration. Stable treatment of the phenol wastewater could be achieved with the AFBR at 18 days but the catechol wastewater couldn't be. At HRT 2 days, the phenol wastewater showed the COD reduction efficiency of 93% and the gas production of 2.7 l/day and the catechol wastewater was obtained the COD reduction efficiency of 82% and the gas production of 0.72 l/day. Also at HRT 1 day the phenol and catechol wastewater showed the COD reduction efficiency of 95% and 73% and the gas production of 4.0 l/day and 1.25 l/day, respectively.
The objective of this study was to investigate biodegradation of TPA(terephthalic acid) and EG (ethylene glycol), treatment efficiency of polyester weight loss wastewater and microbial characteristics by aerated submerged biolfilm(ASB) p.rocess. In a batch reactor, pH increased from 7.0 to 8. 5 in the biodegradation of TPA. Whereas, in case of EG, decreased from 7.0 to 5.2. COD concentration rapidly decreased within 24hr in the biodegradation of TPA and EG. COD removal velocity constant(k) were 0.065-0.088 hr$^{-1}$. The biodegradation velocity of TPA was 1.4 times faster than that of EG. The ratio of suspended biomass to the total biomass in the reactor was 18.3-33.3%, increased as a high ratio of EG content. Biofilm thickness, biofilm dry density and attached biomass were 346-432 $\mu$m, 41.8-61.9 mg/cm$^3$, 1.45-2.67 mg/cm$^2$, respectively. There values increased as a high ratio of TPA content. In the hydraulic retention time of 36 hr, organic loading rate of 4 kgCOD/m$^3\cdot$ day and packing ratio of 70%, the effluent concentrations of TCOD, SCOD in a continuous flow reator were 1,388 mg/l, 147 mg/l and removal efficiencies were 77%, 97.6%, respectively.
