The ventilation system plays a crucial role in underground mine safety. The main objective of the ventilation system is to supply sufficient air to dilute the contaminated air at working places and consequently provide tenable environment during the normal operation, while it also should be capable of controlling the fire propagation and facilitate rescue conditions in case of fire in mines. In this study, a smoke control fan was developed for the auxiliary ventilation as well as the fire smoke exhaust. It works as a free-standing auxiliary fan without tubing to dilute or exhaust the contaminated air from the working places. At the same time, it can be employed to extract the fire smoke. This paper aims to examine the smoke control efficiency of the fan when combined with the current ventilation system in mines. A series of the site experiments and numerical simulations were made to evaluate the fan performance in blind entry development sites. The tracer gas method with SF6 was applied to investigate the contaminant behavior at the study sites. The results of the site study at a large-opening limestone mine were compared with the CFD analysis results with respect to the airflow pattern and the gas concentration. This study shows that in blind development entry, the most polluted and risky place, the smoke fan can exhaust toxic gases or fire smoke effectively if it is properly combined with an additional common auxiliary fan. The venturi effect for smoke exhaust from the blind entry was also observed by the numerical analysis. The overall smoke control efficiency was found to be dependent on the fan location and operating method.

The temperature and moisture distributions in a dry room with a heat and moisture source -i.e., workers- are studied numerically by using a standard $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of heat and moisture ventilation inside the room, the heat removal capacity and the moisture exhaust efficiency are introduced. The effectiveness of ventilation control is analyzed by evaluating the temperature and humidity distributions in the room quantitatively. It is found that the mean absolute humidity inside the room is almost constant regardless of the models and the heat generation rates in this study range. This results from the fact that the moisture generation by the workers was relatively small. Through the modification of the design, 40% improvement in critical decay time was achieved.

The perforated type element for a heat recovery ventilation system has been studied to improve the performance. Four holes of diameter of 6mm are punched out for each flow channel to break the boundary layer development and increase the turbulence. KS cooling and heating conditions and test procedures are applied for study. The efficiencies are compared to those of the typical element with smooth surface. For cooling operations, the temperature, latent and enthalpy efficiencies increase 2.5%, 18% and 8%, respectively. For heating operations, the temperature, latent and enthalpy efficiencies increase 3%, 5% and 3.2%, respectively.
An experiment was conducted to evaluate a ventilation system, which was devised to encourage farmers to use the enclosed growing and finishing pig housing system. A roof-air-entry ventilation system in winter and a side-wall-air-entry system in summer were evaluated. Air flow rate on the floor level which is the low part of pen and the living area of pigs in the enclosed growing and finishing pig house during winter was measured at 0 to 0.19 m/s at the minimum ventilation efficiency of 1,440 $m^{3}/h$. During summer the air flow rate was detected at 0.07 to 0.42 m/s at the maximum ventilation efficiency of 24,000 $m^{3}/h$. Therefore, it is concluded that the side-wall ventilation system is suitable for growing and finishing pigs in the enclosed house during the days of mid-summer and the roof-ventilation system was suitable during the coldest days of mid-winter. In addition, although the enclosed pig house has the system in which air exhausts through only one side wall, air should enter through both-side walls for the better ventilation performance.
This study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of indoor air cleaners and to inform how to select them correctly to the users. The efficiencies of removing suspended bacteria per hour were $64.3{\pm}13.1%$ for filter, wet, and complex type, respectively, which showed the complex type was the most efficient. The removal efficiencies of formaldehyde (HCHO) after two hours operation of air cleaners showed 88.3% and 81.1% for filter and wet type, respectively. The efficiency of complex type, with removal rate of 55.5~58.4%, was decreased after 30 minutes operation. Therefore, it is recommended to perform over 60 minutes when doing air cleaner certification test for HCHO removal efficiency. Generally, air cleaners having low wind volume showed higher efficiency. All tested air cleaners had no potential for removing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which is toxic substances, and it is desirable to develop a device which can control these substances. The results also confirmed that there was no ozone production from all tested air cleaners. And it is recommended to ventilate for 20 minutes every four hours to maintain 50% ventilation status.
Lecture rooms are crowded with many attendees. Moreover, they rely significantly on the natural ventilation through windows for removing and controlling indoor contaminants such as CO2. With the aim of broadening the understanding of the characteristics of natural ventilation phenomena in lecture rooms, the average individual CO2 release rates of attendees were measured during the course of a lecture and compared with previously reported CO2 release rates. In addition, the effects of natural ventilation through windows on the time-variant CO2 concentrations in the center of the lecture room were measured and analyzed. Moreover, details about the overall and regional CO2 concentrations, as well as the air flows in the lecture room, were simulated and analyzed with computational fluid dynamics software, Fluent 2020 R2. It was found that the average individual CO2 release rates were slightly slower than previously reported rates. The local CO2 concentrations in the lecture room for regions with a high density of attendees increased over a short period of time, although the natural ventilation was already started by opening the windows. The overall CO2 concentration in the lecture room rapidly decreased in the early stage of ventilation, but declined very slowly after a longer period of ventilation time. Therefore, in order to enhance the efficiency of a lecture room's natural ventilation, it is recommended to homogeneously distribute the attendees in the lecture room, and to frequently open the windows for short periods of time.
This study primarily is concerned with a new device which has been developed following the international standards to measure the ventilation performance at elevated temperature. This device can measure duration of ventilation, performance of electricity, static pressure at elevated temperature and also it is having provision to measure reversible performances during fire hazards. Invented device is closed circuit type system which is best suited for korean industrial environment with low cost and high efficiency. International standards has been compared and performance testing has been major using BS 7346 which is tested by Warrington Fire Research Centre.

This research analyzed the ventilation effect of the multi-span greenhouse based on the types of greenhouse structure, weather conditions, and locations inside the greenhouse. To compare and analyze the ventilation effects with different types of greenhouse, the uniform environmental conditions should be selected in advance. But these factors are not controlled and require tense many precision facilities and labor forces. Thus, the CFD simulation was used for the air stream to be analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. In addition, for the ventilation effect analysis, the TGD (Tracer Gas Decay) was used to overcome the shortcomings of the current ventilation measurement method. The calculation error of ventilation rate using TGD was low (10.5%). Thus, the TGD is very effective in calculating the ventilation efficiency. The wind direction of 90 degrees showed the best ventilation effect. The ventilation rate also decreased along the air circulation path, and the rate was the lowest around the outlet. The computed fluid method (CFD) turned out to be a power tool for simulating flow behavior in greenhouse.
Air quality in confinement pig houses is important to production and health. Mechanical ventilation and confinement is known to be the most practical tool for maintaining adequate air quality in pig houses through extensive researches since Millier (1950) invented the 'slotted inlet' ventilation system. A variety of mechanical ventilation systems have been applied to confined nursery pig houses in Korea without scientific verification of their ventilation effectiveness. Ventilation systems with three feasible combinations (NA, NB, and NC) of inlets and outlets in a confined nursery pig house were tested to evaluate their ventilation efficiency, of which the one with the performance was supposed to be taken as a standard ventilation system for nursery pig houses in Korea. Field data of air velocity and temperature fields, and ammonia concentration with three ventilation systems were taken and compared to determine the best system. The air velocity and temperature fields predicted by the PHOENICS computer program were also validated against the available experimental data to investigate the feasibility of computer simulation of air and temperature distribution with an acceptable accuracy in a confined house. NC system with duct-induced in-coming air, performed best among the three different ventilation systems, which created higher velocity field and evener distribution ($2.5m/s{\pm}0.3m/s$) over the space with a Reynolds number of $10^4$. The experimental data obtained also fitted well with the simulated values using the modified PHOENICS, which suggested a viable tool for the prediction of air and temperature field with given calculation geometries.

This study is to research technical measures for improving energy efficiency in the conservation and reuse of historic buildings focused on the recent research trends and case studies of the west. These measures are broadly classified into three types, the passive measures for saving energy and increasing comfort, the most cost-effective energy saving strategies, and the renewable energy sources. Firstly, the passive measures are divided into the elements and systems. The passive elements are awnings and overhanging eaves, porches, shutters, storm windows and doors, and shade trees. There are also the natural ventilation systems such as the historic transoms, roofs and attics to improve airflow and cross ventilation to either distribute, or exhaust heat. Secondly, the most cost-effective energy efficiency strategies are the interior insulation, airtightness and moisture protection, and the thermal quality improvement of windows. The energy efficiency solutions of modern buildings are the capillary-active interior insulation, the airtightness and moisture protection of interior walls and openings, and the integration of the original historic window into the triple glazing. Beyond the three actions, the additional strategies are the heat recovery ventilation, and the illumination system. Thirdly, there are photovoltaic(PV) and solar thermal energy, wind energy, hydropower, biomass, and geothermal energy in the renewable energy sources. These energy systems work effectively but it is vital to consider its visual effect on the external appearance of the building.
