  • Background: Management of an agricultural food product system following a nuclear accident is indispensable for reducing radiation exposure due to ingestion of contaminated food. The present study analyzes the effect of agricultural countermeasures on ingestion dose following a nuclear accident. Materials and Methods: Agricultural countermeasures suitable for domestic farming environments were selected by referring to the countermeasures applied after the Fukushima accident in Japan. The avertable ingestion doses that could be obtained by implementing the selected countermeasures were calculated using the Korean Agricultural Countermeasure Analysis Program (K-ACAP) to investigate the efficiency of each countermeasure. Results and Discussion: Of the selected countermeasures, the management of crops was effective when radionuclide deposition occurred during the growing season of plants. Treatment by soil additive and topsoil removal was effective when deposition occurred during the nongrowing season of plants. The disposal of milk was not effective owing to the small contribution of milk to the overall ingestion dose. Clean feeding of livestock was effective when deposition occurred during the growing season of fodder plants such as pasture and rice-straw. Finally, the effect of food restriction increased with the soil deposition density of radionuclide. The practical effect of countermeasures was very small when the avertable ingestion dose was absolutely low. Conclusion: The agricultural countermeasures selected to reduce the radionuclide ingestion dose after a nuclear accident must be made appropriate by considering the accident situation, such as the soil deposition density of the radionuclide and the deposition date in relation to farming cycles.

  • Feed conversion efficiency contributes directly or indirectly on the cost benefit ratio of silkworm rearing and is considered to be an important physiological criterion for evaluating the superiority of silkworm breeds/hybrids. Food intake, assimilation and conversion of indigenous as well as exotic silkworm races are well studied by many researchers. In this review, an attempt has been made to consolidate works on feed conversion aspects of indigenous and exotic silkworm races. The paper also deals with the effect of various factors viz., nutritional, environmental and feeding on food assimilation and conversion parameters of mulberry silkworm.

  • The present study was developed in order to evaluate the effect of five essential oils on the workers of the leaf-cutting ants; Atta sexdens rubropilosa and Acromyrmex subterraneus molestans by contact with a treated surface and ingestion with a treated leaves.. The essential oils of cinnamon, clove and mustard had generally more effective with 5, 10 and 15% concentrations after 24, 48, 72 and 96 h against workers of A. sexdens rubropilosa and A. subterraneus molestans in contact bioassay, but mustard was the most effective in ingestion bioassay on both species. On the other hand, there was no significant difference among the essential oils with 1% concentration and control after 24, 48 and 72 h of treatment in contact and ingestion bioassays against workers of A. sexdens rubropilosa . However, Andiroba oil had less efficiency values in all concentrations been used. Therefore, the essential oils of mustard, cinnamon and clove have contact and ingestion effects on workers of A. sexdens rubropilosa and A. subterraneus molestans, and may be promising on the leaf-cutting ant control.

  • The growth, respiration, ingestion, and ecological efficiencies of Hexagrammos otakii larvae and juveniles reared on different diets and temperatures were estimated. A factorial experiment using two diets [non-enriched hatched Artemia nauplii (NEA) and enriched Artemia nauplii (EA)] crossed with two temperatures [natural seawater temperature (NT, $5.1-8.5^{\circ}C$) and heated seawater (HT, $13{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$)] was conducted to investigate growth and energy budgets of Hexagrammos otakii larvae and juveniles. The energy used by larvae and juveniles for 6 weeks was calculated using data on ingestion, growth, respiration, excretion, and egestion. In the NT trials, the energy used for growth by larvae and juveniles was 0.121 and 0.129 Kcal in the NEA and EA treatments, respectively. Assimilation efficiency at NT were 78.0% and 80.2% in the NEA and EA trials, respectively. Gross growth efficiency ($K_1$) were 60.5% and 62.3% and net growth efficiency ($K_2$) was 77.56% and 77.71% in the NEA and EA trials, respectively. In the HT trials, the energy used for growth by juveniles was 0.189 and 0.212 Kcal in the NEA and EA trials, respectively. Assimilation efficiency at HT was 86.4% and 95.1% in the NEA and EA trials, respectively. Values of $K_1$ and $K_2$ at HT were 69.5% and 80.43%, respectively, in the NEA trials, and 73.9% and 77.66%, respectively, in the EA trials. These results suggest that enriched Artemia nauplii and higher temperatures ($13{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$) are effective for rearing larvae and juveniles of H. otakii.

  • The author investigated the effects of dietary composition upon the work efficiency of Splague Dowley rat at high altitude, and obtained the following results: 1. At high altitude a carbohydrate-rich diets worked more favorably upon work efficiency of the animal then a protein and or fat-rich diets did. 2. It may be recommended that fibrous components be excluded from the diets. 3. Ingestion of large amounts of sugars prior to the onset of work load is highly recommended.

  • The objectives of this study were to determine the highest inclusion of licury (Syagrus coronate) cake in the diet of growing Boer goats without adverse effects on intake and digestibility and to determine its effects on ingestive behavior and physiological responses. Twenty entire, one year old 3/4 Boer goats, 18.1 kg (DS = 2.2) average body weight (BW), were allocated to dietary treatments in a completely randomized design. Each animal was confined in a $1.0\;m^2$ pen with a suspended floor and given ad libitum access to clean, fresh water. Diets were formulated to meet NRC (2007) requirements and the ingredients were: 50% of Tifton-85 (Cynodon sp.) hay, corn meal, soybean meal, mineral and vitamin premix, and licury cake. The treatments were: i) no addition of licury cake to the diet, ii) 15% (DM basis) addition of licury cake, iii) 30% licury cake and, iv) 45% licury cake. The experiment lasted for 17 days; the first 10 days were used to adapt the animals to the diets and facilities. The inclusion of licury cake increased the fiber concentration of the diets; however, there was no effect on either dry matter (DM) or organic matter (OM) intake. There was a linear increase (p<0.05) in the EE content of the diet as the addition of licury cake increased; however, EE intake did not differ (p>0.05) between treatments. The digestibility of non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC) decreased with increasing inclusion of licury cake, as did NFC intake. The efficiency of ingestion of DM and NDF presented a negative quadratic effect with the inclusion of licury cake. Results from this study indicate that licury cake can be fed to goats at up to 45% of the diet without adverse effects on either intake or digestibility.

  • Feeding is an important aspect of insect nutrition which in turn supports growth, development, reproduction and survival. The impact of quantitative feeding on nutritional parameters of fifth instar Antheraea mylitta larvae was studied by providing fresh leaves of Terminalia tomentosa for 1 to 4 times a day. All the parameters improved upon providing fresh diets more times over the single diet (1FD). The absolute body weight increased with increase in number of feeds/day significantly (P<0.001). While the maximum weight recorded was 29.61 g in 1FD, the respective weights for two feeds/day (2FD), three feeds/day (3FD) and four feeds/day (4FD) were 39.41 g, 40.63 g and 42.66 g respectively. Feeding period and instar duration were declined (P<0.001) and survival increased significantly (P<0.001) upon increase in the number of diets. Nutritional indices like ingestion, digestion, relative consumption rate (RCR), relative growth rate (RGR) and gain in body weight increased significantly with the increase in number of feeds/day, but approximate digestibility (AD) and efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI) declined, while efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD) did not change.

  • Feeding rats a diet containing bean-hull causes hypertropy in their parotid glands due to the high tannin content. The amount of feedintake of rats led bean-hull was higher than that of rats fed a standard diet. However, the increase in body weight of rats fed bean-hull was lower than that of rats fed a standard diet, which resulted in significantly low feed efficiency of the bean-hull containing diet. Within one week, parotid glands significantly enlarged and a series of proline-rich proteins (PRPs) were produced, which were similar to those induced by feeding high-tannin sorghum with flight differences in molecular weights. Even though the direct comparison between PRPs produced by the bean-hull containing diet and those induced by the high sorghum diet is not appropriate due to laboratory inconsistences, several new PRPs were produced by high tannin diets in both experiments. Differences in molecular weights of PRPs induced in two different tannin sources must be funker investigated to be fully characterized. These morphological and biochemical changes have now been demonstrated to occur in response to the ingestion of tannins, presumably to diminish the anti-nutritional effects of tannins.
