  • The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the positive effects of artificial ground greening on the reduction of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) which can help improve ecological functions in cities and mitigation of climate change, through quantifying $CO_2$ uptake and evapotranspiration by the process of photosynthesis of some plants. Experiment of $CO_2$ uptake and evapotranspiration was conducted by measurement of $CO_2$ exchange rate using the infrared gas analyzer, for 7 month, growing season from May to November 2009, 2 times a month. The result was as follows; The $CO_2$ uptake quantity per $cm^2$ of Chrysanthemum zawadskii was the highest rate at $21.47{\times}10^{-6}g/cm^2/s$ and Poa pratensis was $16.20g{\times}10^{-6}g/cm^2/s$. The stronger was light of intensity, the higher were $CO_2$ uptake rate of most plants. In quantity of evapotranspiration, Poa pratensis was the highest rate at $8.75{\times}10^{-5}g/cm^2/s$ and Aquilegia buergariana was $8.66{\times}10^{-5}g/cm^2/s$. From this study, it is confirmed that artificial ground greening has capacity of absorption $CO_2$ and effects on improving urban microclimate.

  • In previous studies, we performed joint animal studies and clinical trials between Yonsei University and Oryza Oil & Fat Chemical Co. Ltd. We have shown that coffee bean extract has potent anti-obesity and hypotriglyceridemic activities as well as beneficial effects on body fat reduction. In this study, the effects of coffee bean extract (100 mg/capsule) on body fat reduction were evaluated in overweight/obese women (body mass index of 25~30 $kg/m^2$ or body fat > 30%) not diagnosed with any type of disease. Subjects were randomly assigned to a coffee bean extract group (n=10) or placebo group (n=10). We measured anthropometric parameters, abdominal fat distribution by computed tomography and blood components before and after the 8week intervention period. After supplementation, the coffee bean extract group showed body weight (p=0.08), body mass index (p=0.06), hip circumference (p<0.05), and upper waist circumference (p< 0.01). In addition, after 8 weeks, the coffee bean extract group showed a significant decrease in abdominal internal fat area compared to 0 weeks (0 weeks : $155.8cm^2$; 8 weeks : $145.9cm^2$, ${\Delta}$ change : $-9.9cm^2$, respectively). However, there were no significant differences in lipid profiles or serological measurements between the coffee bean extract group and placebo group. The results of our human study demonstrated that coffee bean extract supplementation for 8 weeks has beneficial effects on reducing abdominal internal fat area as well as hip and waist circumferences.

  • To overcome the shortage of conventional TWC that is activated at high temperature, higher than 25$0^{\circ}C$, photocatalyst is considered as an new technology. Because the photocatalytic reaction of photocatalyst is not a thermo mechanical reaction, it is necessary to heat the system to start the reaction. It can be activated just by ultra violet light that includes wavelengths shorter than 400 nanometers even at ambient temperature. In this study photocatalytic reduction of hydrocarbon was investigated with a model gas test. To understand the effects of co-existence gases on the hydrocarbon reduction by photoreaction, CO and NO, $O_2, H_2O$ gases those are components of exhaust gases of gasoline engine are supplied with C3H8/N2 to a photoreactor. The photoreactor contains $TiO_2$ photocatalyst powders and a UV bulb. The results show that oxygen is the most important factor to reduce HC emission with photocatalyst. Photocatalyst seems to have a good probability for automotive application to reduce cold start HC emissions.

  • With environmental regulations continuously being strengthened internationally the need to control environmental pollution and environmental load is emerging in Korea. The purpose of this study is to seek methods or using waste cementitious powder as an alternative raw material for limestone through the optimization of raw material and to quantitatively analyze the resulting reduction of $CO_2$ emission in order to contribute to solving the issue of waste, which is the biggest issue in relation to construction and global warming. The results of the study, show that waste cementitious powder can be used as an alternative raw material for limestone at OPC level, but it was also found that mixing fine aggregate cementitious powder into waste cementitious powder significantly affected the substitution rate for limestone with waste cementitious powder and the reduction of greenhouse gas. In particular, when fine aggregate cementitious powder was used at a rate of 0~20%, the substitution rate for limestone and the reduction in the rate of greenhouse gas emission was significantly reduced. It is thought that a technique to efficiently separate and discharge the fine aggregate cementitious powder mixed in waste cementitious powder needs to be developed in the future.

  • This study explored effects of urban greenspace on improving atmospheric environment, which is concerned with $CO_2$, SO$_2$ and NO$_2$ uptake, and with reduction of summer air temperatures. The site of this study was focused on Jung-gu in Seoul. Tree density and cover were 1.1 trees/100 $m^2$ and 12.5% respectively for the study area except forest lands. Atmospheric purification by greenspace was associated with changes in tree cover per unit area of each land use type. The mean $CO_2$ storage by woody plants was 19.4t/ha, and annual uptake averaged 2.2t/ha/yr for $CO_2$, 1.9kg/ha/yr for SO$_2$ and 5.0kg/ha/yr for NO$_2$. Entire tree plantings in the study area played a significant role by annually offsetting $CO_2$ emissions of about 1,830t from fossil fuel consumption by 330 persons, SO$_2$ emissions of 1,620kg by 1,080 persons, and NO$_2$ emissions of 4,230kg by 450 persons. The summer air temperature was 3.6$^{\circ}C$ cooler at a location with 54% cover of woody plants and 4.5$^{\circ}C$ cooler at a forest site with 100% cover, compared to a place with no planting. A 10% increase of woody plant cover was estimated to decrease summer air temperature by approximately 0.6$^{\circ}C$ until a certain level of canopy cover. Analyzing data from the Automatic Weather Stations in Seoul revealed that increasing tree cover decreased mean air temperature for the summer season (Jun~Aug) in a nonlinear function. Woody plant cover was the best predictive variable of summer temperature reduction. The results from this study are expected to be useful in emphasizing the environmental benefits and importance of urban greenspace enlargement, and in urging the necessity for planting and management budgets.

  • Electrocatalytic effects for the reduction of thionyl chloride in $LiAICI_4/SOCl_2$ electrolyte solution containing Schiff base M(II) (M; Co and Fe) complexes are evaluated by determining kinetic parameters with cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry at a glassy carbon electrode. The charge transfer process during the reduction of thionyl chloride is affected by the concentration of the catalyst. The catalytic effects are demonstrated from both a shift of the reduction potential for the thionyl chloride toward a more positive direction and an increase in peak currents. Catalytic effects are larger in thionyl chloride solutions containing the binuclear [M(II) $_2$ (TSBP)] complex rather than mononuclear [M(II)(BSDT)] complexes. Significant improvements in the cell performance have been noted in terms of both thermodynamics and activation energy for the thionyl chloride reduction. The activation energy calculated from the Arrhenius plots is 4.5-5.9 kcal/mole at bare glassy carbon electrodes. The activation energy calculated for the catalyst containing solution is 3.3-4.9 kcalmole, depending on whether the temperature is lowered or rasied.

  • Using the difference in differences (DID) estimation method, this paper analyzes the effect of European Union's Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) on the reduction of per capita $CO_2$ emission among the twenty five participating countries. For this, the panel dataset of forty two European countries for the period 1990~2007 is constructed. Special attention is paid to the bias of the standard errors in the DID estimation due to the presence of serial correlation in the error terms. The results shows quite a robust effect of EU ETS on the reduction of per capita $CO_2$ emission among the participating countries regardless of the calculation methods of standard errors. The results also shows that the increased implicit tax rate on energy has a robust effect on the reduction of per capita $CO_2$ emission. On the contrary, the estimation results regarding the effects of per capita GDP and population density on the per capita $CO_2$ emission seem inconsistent. In particular, the environmental Kuznets curve is not statistically supported with the use of robust standard errors.

  • Acicular Fe-Co alloy particles are one of the candidates for high-density magnetic recording media. We examined the effects of Co additions on the magnetic properties of Fe-Co alloy particles by using M$\'{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy, TEM, and X-ray diffraction. Acicular $Fe_n$Co (n=5, 4, 3, 2) alloy particles coated with silica, were prepared by a chemical coprecipitation method and subsequent H $_2$ reduction. The crystal structure was found to be cubic in all n ranges. The lattice constant $a_0$ decreases with increasing Co contents. Analysis of $^{57}Fe$ M\'{o}$ssbauer effect data in terms of the local configurations of Co atoms has permitted the influence of magnetic hyperfine interactions to be monitored.

  • Interest about Modal Shift is not being decreased, and it is drawing limelight as green logistics which meets low carbon green growth of National development vision. As an effect of Modal Shift, not only reduction in CO2 emission but also reduction in social cost, logistics cost etc. are being discussed. However, until now research about its practical transformation effect has been scanty. In this study, the actual expenses via CO2 emission, social cost, and logistics cost etc. by road transportation and rail transportation of container cargo with Origin/Destination between Busan-Kyeonggi Area were calculated and we propose beneficial effects when transportation mode is transformed from road to rail with Scenario Planning.

  • This study is an experimental study on the characteristics of emission by changing catalytic converter position for cold-start. The measurements are done a changing of the distance between exhaust manifold and catalytic converter. It measured temperature of exhaust manifold, before and after catalytic converter at each position of experimental condition. and measured the characteristics of emission which is HC, CO, $CO_{2}$ and lambda at each position of experimental condition. The results show a few advantage about reduction of HC and CO as catalytic converter's temperature is raised quickly as closed exhaust manifold. but $CO_{2}$ has not the same trend of HC and CO. From measurement value of lambda, reduction effects of $NO_{x}$ are known a few advantage as increase of the distance between exhaust manifold and catalytic converter.
