The soil mechanical characteristics according to geologic conditions were investigated in the study area. The geology of study area was consisted of Ingok Tuff, Yuchi Conglomerate and Dado Tuff. Yuchi Tuff covered about 80% of the study area. The disturbed and undisturbed soils were sampled from the conglomerate area, Tuff area and Shale area, and then a series of the laboratory soil tests was performed. The soils sampled from the conglomerate area have a large dry unit weight and a low permeability relatively, while the soils sampled from tuff and shale areas have a small dry unit weight and a high permeability. It is proven that the soil permeability is highly affected by the effective grain size and the silt and clay content. That is, the soil permeability is increased with increasing the effective grain size, and the soil permeability is decreased with increasing the silt and clay content.
The magnetic properties of ultrathin $Fe_{84}B_{9}Nb_{7}$ nanocrystalline ribbon alloy with the thickness of $7-14\;\mu\textrm{m}$ were investigated. It was found that the effective permeability at the frequency over 100 kHz increased with decreasing ribbon thickness. Moreover the core loss decreased considerably with reduction of the ribbon thickness. The effective permeability at 1 MHz and the core loss at 1 MHz and 0.1 T for $Fe_{84}B_{9}Nb_{7}$ alloy with the thickness of $7\;\mu\textrm{m}$ were 3,700 and 2.7 W/cc, respectively. The reduction of thickness to less than $10\;\mu\textrm{m}$ was found to be very effective in obtaining high permeability and low core loss in the MHz frequency range. It was considered that the improvement of magnetic properties in the high frequency range was due to the reduction of the eddy current.
This study was conducted to develop a reservoir modelling workflow to reproduce the heterogeneous distribution of effective permeability that impacts on the performance of SAGD (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage), the in-situ bitumen recovery technique in the Athabasca Oil Sands. Lithologic facies distribution is the main cause of the heterogeneity in bitumen reservoirs in the study area. The target formation consists of sand with mudstone facies in a fluvial-to-estuary channel system, where the mudstone interrupts fluid flow and reduces effective permeability. In this study, the lithologic facies is classified into three classes having different characteristics of effective permeability, depending on the shapes of mudstones. The reservoir modelling workflow of this study consists of two main modules; facies modelling and permeability modelling. The facies modelling provides an identification of the three lithologic facies, using a stochastic approach, which mainly control the effective permeability. The permeability modelling populates mudstone volume fraction first, then transforms it into effective permeability. A series of flow simulations applied to mini-models of the lithologic facies obtains the transformation functions of the mudstone volume fraction into the effective permeability. Seismic data contribute to the facies modelling via providing prior probability of facies, which is incorporated in the facies models by geostatistical techniques. In particular, this study employs a probabilistic neural network utilising multiple seismic attributes in facies prediction that improves the prior probability of facies. The result of using the improved prior probability in facies modelling is compared to the conventional method using a single seismic attribute to demonstrate the improvement in the facies discrimination. Using P-wave velocity in combination with density in the multiple seismic attributes is the essence of the improved facies discrimination. This paper also discusses sand matrix porosity that makes P-wave velocity differ between the different facies in the study area, where the sand matrix porosity is uniquely evaluated using log-derived porosity, P-wave velocity and photographically-predicted mudstone volume.
Permeation grouting effectively enhances soil strength and decreases permeability of soil; however, the flow of grout is heavily affected by anisotropy of hydraulic conductivity in layers. Therefore, this study investigates the effect of permeability anisotropy on the effective radius of horizontal permeation grout using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). We modeled the horizontal permeation grout flow as a two-phase viscous fluid flow in porous media, and the model incorporated the chemical diffusion and the viscosity variation due to hardening. The numerical simulation reveals that the permeability anisotropy shapes the grout bulb to be elliptic and the dissolution-driven diffusion causes a gradual change in grout pore saturation at the edge of the grout bulb. For the grout pore saturations of 10%, 50% and 90%, the horizontal and vertical radii of grout bulb are estimated when the horizontal-to-vertical permeability ratio varies from 0.01 to 100, and the predictive model equations are suggested. This result contributes to more efficient design of injection strategy in formation layers with permeability anisotropy.
A transient pulse methos has been used to measure the permeability of Pocheon granite pre-heated from $25^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$ at effective pressure up to 32MPa. The permeability of whole rock ranged from 0.72 $\mu$d at 10MPa to 0.20 $\mu$d at 32MPa. The permeability of rock heated to $600^{\circ}C$ ranged from 18.07$\mu$d at 10MPa to 6.39$\mu$d at 32MPa. Confining pressure has greater effects on the rocks thermally treated to lower thermal-cycle temperatures than on the higher thermally treated rocks. The increase of permeability is most pronounced between 40$0^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. Below 40$0^{\circ}C$, permeability increase is expected to be associated with the formation of new cracks and widening of preexisting cracks, whereas above 40$0^{\circ}C$, permeability increase is expected to reflect widening of cracks. Using the equivalent channel model, author shows that the exponent n in the relationship relating the permebility(k) to porosity($\phi$) by k∝$$\phi$^n$ falls in the range 2.7$\leq$n$\leq$3.0.
P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is a permeability glycoprotein also known as multidrug resistance protein 1 (MDR1). P-gp is an ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter that pumps various types of drugs out of cells. These transporters reduce the intracellular concentrations of drugs and disturb drug absorption. The Caco-2 cell permeability assay system is an effective in vitro system that predicts the intestinal absorption of drugs and the functions of enzymes and transporters. Rhodamine-123 (R-123) and digoxin are well-known P-gp substrates that have been used to determine the function of P-gp. Efflux of P-gp substrates by P-gp has been routinely evaluated. To date, a number of herbal medicines have been tested with Caco-2 cell permeability assay system to assess bioavailability. There are growing efforts to find phytochemicals that potentially regulate P-gp function. The Caco-2 cell permeability assay system is a primary strategy to search for candidates of P-gp inhibitors. In this mini review, we have summarized the P-gp modulation by herbal extracts, decoctions or single components from natural products using Caco-2 cell permeability assays. Many natural products are known to regulate P-gp and herbal medicines could be used in combination with conventional drugs to enhance bioavailability.
A resonable and economical method which can predict permeability of rock mass in underground is needed to overcome the uncertainty of groundwater behavior. For this par pose, one prediction method of permeability has been studied. The artificial neural networks model using error back propagation algorithm, . one of the teaching techniques, is utilized for this purpose. In order to verify the applicability of this model, in-situ permeability results are simulated. The simulation results show the potentiality of utilizing the neural networks for effective permeability prediction of rock mass.
In this study, the application of conventional cubic law to a deep depth condition was experimentally evaluated. Moreover, a modified equation for estimating the rock permeability at a deep depth was suggested using precise hydraulic tests and an effect analysis according to the vertical stress, pore water pressure and fracture roughness. The experimental apparatus which enabled the generation of high pore water pressure (< 10 MPa) and vertical stress (< 20 MPa) was manufactured, and the surface roughness of a cylindrical rock sample was quantitatively analyzed by means of 3D (three-dimensional) laser scanning. Experimental data of the injected pore water pressure and outflow rate obtained through the hydraulic test were applied to the cubic law equation, which was used to estimate the permeability of rock fracture. The rock permeability was estimated under various pressure (vertical stress and pore water pressure) and geometry (roughness) conditions. Finally, an empirical formula was proposed by considering nonlinear flow behavior; the formula can be applied to evaluations of changes of rock permeability levels in deep underground facility such as nuclear waste disposal repository with high vertical stress and pore water pressure levels.
This investigation presented conventional triaxial and creep-permeability tests on sandstones considering thermally-induced damage (TID). The TID had no visible effects on rock surface color, effective porosity and permeability below $300^{\circ}C$ TID level. The permeability enlarged approximately two orders of magnitude as TID increased to $1000^{\circ}C$ level. TID of $700^{\circ}C$ level was a threshold where the influence of TID on the normalized mass and volume of the specimen can be divided into two linear phases. Moreover, no prominent variations in the deformation moduli and peak strength and strain appeared as TID< $500^{\circ}C$ level. It is interesting that the peak strength increased by 24.3% at $700^{\circ}C$ level but decreased by 11.5% at $1000^{\circ}C$ level. The time-related deformation and steady-state creep rate had positive correlations with creep loading and the TID level, whereas the instantaneous modulus showed the opposite. The strain rates under creep failure stresses raised 1-4 orders of magnitude than those at low-stress levels. The permeability was not only dependent on the TID level but also dependent on creep deformation. The TID resulted in large deformation and complexity of failure pattern for the sandstone.
To derive easily the coefficient of permeability from several other soil properties, the estimation model of coefficient of permeability was proposed using linear regression analysis. The coefficient of permeability is one of the major factors to evaluate the soil characteristics. The study area is located in Kangwon-do Pyeongchang-gun Jinbu-Myeon. Soil samples of 45 spots were taken from the study area and various soil tests were carried out in laboratory. After selecting the soil factor influenced by the coefficient of permeability through the correlation analysis, the estimation model of coefficient of permeability was developed using the linear regression analysis between the selected soil factor and the coefficient of permeability from permeability test. Also, the estimation model of coefficient of permeability was compared with the results from permeability test and empirical equation, and the suitability of proposed model was proved. As the result of correlation analysis between various soil factors and the coefficient of permeability using SPSS(statistical package for the social sciences), the largest influence factor of coefficient of permeability were the effective grain size, porosity and dry unit weight. The coefficient of permeability calculated from the proposed model was similar to that resulted from permeability test. Therefore, the proposed model can be used in case of estimating the coefficient of permeability at the same soil condition like study area.
