  • This study investigates tsunami force acting on a group of onshore structures numerically by using three-dimensional one-field model for immiscible multi-phase flows, which is based on Navier-Stokes solver. In particular, we studied on the characteristics of tsunami with respect to the arrangement of onshore structures and the distance from seawall trough numerical experiments. For validation of the numerical method used in this study to calculate tsunami force, numerical results for tsunami force on the structures in coastal area are compared with available experimental data. Furthermore, a detail study on the efficiency of the numerical method is performed for the estimation of tsunami force based on the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic methods in which the numerical results are used. The obtained results are compared to the previous experimental one and design criteria. Considering both experimental results and numerical analysis results, semi-empirical formula by regression analysis is proposed. As a result, it was confirmed that the numerical analysis is effective to estimate on tsunami force acting on onshore structures.

  • When water is evaporated quickly from a water-based colloidal suspension, colloidal particles protrude from the water surface, distorting it and generating lateral capillary forces between the colloidal particles. The protruded colloidal particles are then assembled into ordered colloidal crystalline domains that float on the water surface on account of their having a lower effective density than water. These colloidal crystal domains then assemble together by lateral capillary force and convective flow; the generated colloidal crystal has grain boundaries. The single domain size of the colloidal crystal could be controlled, to some extent, by changing the rate of water evaporation, but it seems very difficult to fabricate a single crystal over a large area of the water's surface without reorienting each colloidal crystal domain. To reorient such colloidal crystal domains, a glass plate was dipped into the colloidal suspension at a tilted angle because the meniscus (airwaterglass plate interface) is pinned and thinned by further water evaporation. The thinning meniscus generated a shear force and reoriented the colloidal crystalline domains into a single domain.

  • High-efficient machining, which means cutting a part in the least amount of time, is the most effective tool to improve productivity. In this study, a new feed optimization method based on the cutting power regulation was proposed to realize the high-efficient machining in turning process. The cutting area was evaluated by using the Boolean intersection operation between the cutting tool and workpiece. And the cutting force and power were predicted from the cutting parameters such as feed, depth of cut, spindle speed, specific cutting force, and so on. Especially, the reliability of the proposed optimization method was validated by comparing the predicted and measured cutting forces. The simulation results showed that the proposed optimization method could effectively enhance the productivity in turning process.

  • There are two methods commonly used in design of splice plate connection of frame structure. The one is Design by Actual Stress which can sufficiently transfer actual force to an adjacent member using rows of bolts. The other is Design by Member Strength which is able to transfer total allowable stress of effective section area to a connected member. In real design, as a matter of convenience, Standard Connection Drawings have used according to Design by Member Strength. But this method underestimate connection force in shear connection where large connection moment occured. In this study, these Design methods are compared by connection moment in shear connections. and the adequate use of them are recommended. Also In order to evaluate more accurately the actual stress of splice plate of flange on moment. connection, a new calculation method of it is recommended.

  • In this paper, we present the design procedure and analysis the fundamental characteristics for Linear DC motor using permeance method and finite element method. Designed LDM is made of two permanent magnets, three iron core and amateur windings. For the design the LDM, first of all it is nessary to calculate the air gap flux density and thrust force, after that to determine core size, the numbers of winding turns, winding width, motor cross section area and losses in the coil. Also, we analysis the fundamental characteristics for implemented LDM according to proposed design procedure, and we find that the implemented LDM generated constant thrust force for costant current as long as iron of core is not saturated. Finally, we find that the proposed design procedure in this paper is effective to design and implementation of LDM.

  • Objective: This study aims to examine the psychological effects of pilots caused by the environmental differences between actual and simulated flights by measuring biochemical stress level and subjective stress level. Background: Currently, the flight system of the air force suffers from several problems including a limited training area, increase of complex and tangled missions and rise in oil prices. In order to overcome these problems an L-V-C (Live, Virtual, Constructive) training system has been proposed as a solution. However, to establish the effective L-V-C training system, it is required to figure out the characteristics of each system first. Also we have to solve the problems which could occur when these systems are connected together. Method: In order to measure the biochemical stress level of pilots, we investigated the differences in cortisol responses after actual and simulated flight training separately. Meanwhile, we conducted the questionnaire survey of about 40 pilots to identify the subjective stress level of pilots. Results: There was significant difference in cortisol level between actual and simulated flight tasks. However, we found that there was no significant difference in pilots' feelings about two flight tasks. Conclusion: The results from this study can be used as basis for the further research on not only how to decrease linkage errors of the L system and the V system but also how to make the L-V training system more practical. Application: The results of the analysis might help to develop the Live-Virtual-Constructive (LVC) pilot training system.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether extension of the custom base is necessary for enhancement of bond strength, by comparing the debonding forces and residual adhesives of 3 different lingual bracket systems. Methods: A total of 42 extracted upper premolars were randomly divided into 3 groups of 14 each for bonding with brackets having (1) a conventional limited resin custom base; (2) an extended gold alloy custom base: Incognito${TM}$; and (3) an extended resin custom base: KommonBase${TM}$. The bonding area was measured by scanning the bracket bases with a 3-dimensional digital scanner. The debonding force was measured with an Instron universal testing machine, which applied an occlusogingival shear force. Results: The mean debonding forces were 60.83 N (standard deviation [SD] 10.12), 69.29 N (SD 9.59), and 104.35 N (SD17.84) for the limited resin custom base, extended gold alloy custom base, and extended resin custom base, respectively. The debonding force observed with the extended resin custom base was significantly different from that observed with the other bases. In addition, the adhesive remnant index was significantly higher with the extended gold alloy custom base. Conclusions: All 3 custom-base lingual brackets can withstand occlusal and orthodontic forces. We conclude that effective bonding of lingual brackets can be obtained without extension of the custom base.

  • Graphene, the building block of graphite, is one of the most promising materials due to their fascinating electronic transport properties. The pseudo-two-dimensional sp2 bonding in graphene layers yields one of the most effective solid lubricants. In this poster, we present the correlation between electrical and nanomechanical properties of graphene layer grown on Cu/Ni substrate with CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) method. The electrical (current and conductance) and nanomechanical (adhesion and friction) properties have been investigated by the combined apparatus of friction force microscopy/conductive probe atomic force microscopy (AFM). The experiment was carried out in a RHK AFM operating in ultrahigh vacuum using cantilevers with a conductive TiN coating. The current was measured as a function of the applied load between the AFM tip and the graphene layer. The contact area has been obtained with the continuum mechanical models. We will discuss the influence of mechanical deformation on the electrical transport mechanism on graphene layers.

  • The present study describes a new technique to extract the primary silicon from an Al-Si alloy melt using centrifugal force during its solidification. The primary silicon was separated from an Al-50 wt.%Si alloy by centrifugal force in the form of a foam, which facilitated subsequent acid leaching to extract the pure silicon due to its wide surface area. The foam recovery after centrifugal separation was decreased as centrifugal acceleration was increased. The final recovery after acid leaching became closer to the solid fraction of the alloy, which was calculated from the Al-Si binary phase diagram, with increasing centrifugal acceleration due to the effective removal of the attached Al on the foam. The purity of the primary silicon obtained by the centrifugal separation method was over 99.99%, with only aluminum being also present.
