  • Due to the potential application to ultra-high strength fibers and excellent properties such as high mechanical properties, excellent thermal endurance and chemical stability, thermotropic liquid crystal polymers (TLCPS) are attractive in recent years [1, 2]. Furthermore, the melt blends of TLCPS and conventional thermoplastics have been extensively investigated because of their easy processing and high performance [3-6]. Since high performance polymers generally has high melt viscosity, introduction of the relatively low viscosity components may be one of the more effective techniques to improve processability through the decrement of melt viscosity in melt processing. • Mineral hydrate is a new insulation material that compensates for the defects of existing materials. Mineral hydrate is made of inorganic ingredients; therefore, it is nonflammable. The porous structure of mineral hydrate makes the material lightweight and insulating. Mineral hydrate insulation and similar products have been studied and manufactured in Korea and abroad. However, these insulation materials need to improve in terms of strength. In this study, basalt fiber was used to enhance the strength. In order to observe the property changes, compressive strength, heat conductivity, and specific gravity were measured and XRD pattern analysis was performed. These tests confirmed that basalt fiber was effective at improving the strength and lowering the heat conductivity of mineral hydrate insulation.

  • Recently fiber sheets are used for strengthening the damaged concrete structures due to its many advantages such as its durability, non-corrosive nature, low weight, ease of application, cost saving, control of crack propagation, strength to thickness ratio, high tensile strength, serviceability and aesthetic. However, the lack of analytical procedures for predicting the nominal moment capacity by the fiber sheet reinforcement leads to difficulties in the effective process of decisions of the factors in the strengthening procedure. In this work, flexural strengthening effects by fiber sheets bonded on soffit and web of the member are theoretically studied for the reinforced concrete T beam. The analytical solutions are compared with experimental results of several references to verify the proposed approach.

  • An image processing algorithm has been developed in order to analyze the nanofiber web images obtained from a high magnification microscope. It has been known that precise pore detection on thick webs is extremely difficult mainly due to lack of light uniformity, difficulty of fine focusing and translucency of nanofiber web. The pore detection algorithm developed has been found to show excellent performance in characterizing the porous structure, thus being a promising tool for on-line quality control system under mass production. Since the images obtained from an optical microscope represent only web surface, a scale factor has been introduced to estimate the web structure as a whole. Resulting web structures have been compared to those by mercury porosimetry, especially in pore size distribution. It has been shown that those two structures have a strong correlation, indicating that scaling of a single layer web structure can be an effective way of estimating the structure of thick fiber webs.

  • The feasibility of separating Pichia stipitis from a fermentation broth using a hollow fiber membrane was evaluated. The permeate flux was affected by such parameters as cell concentration, pH, content of antifoam agents, suction pressure, and recirculation rate. A minor effect of temperature on the flux loss was also observed. A microcomputer-aided backflush was proven effective in alleviating membrane fouling and allowing long term separation of P. stipitis from a fermentation broth.

  • This study shows the fatigue test results of experiment on the strengthened slabs, the probability analysis of the fatigue behavior is also presented. Static und fatigue tests were performed on bridge decks strengthened with fiber plastics(Carbon Fiber Sheet, Glass Fiber Sheet, Grid Type Carbon Fiber). In this study, to analyze the probabilistic distribution of the fatigue life, the Weibull distribution was adopted. The Weibull distribution coefficient is inferred from the S-N diagram and the number of repeated load. As the result analysis, as the stress level is higher, the fatigue limit of the strengthened bridge deck are similarly discovered but in the range of the fatigue limit, CG specimen that was strengthened with Grid Type Carbon was proved most effective of reinforcement.

  • For finite analysis of concrete columns strengthened with glass fiber sheets, an effective concrete model which considers the confining effects by lateral reinforcement and glass fiber sheets is necessary. In this paper, the so-called elasto-plasticity and continuum fracture model (EPF model) is modified to consider high confining effects of strengthened reinforced concrete columns by introducing a simple correction factor ($\alpha$) which relates maximum lateral confining stress of the column to the evolution of deviatoric plasticity. Then, a finite element analysis is carried out for the strengthened reinforced concrete columns using the modified EPF model and equally spaced truss elements. It is shown that the, analysis predicts well the failure behavior of reinforced concrete columns strengthened with glass fiber sheets.

  • This study purpose is to develop the high fireproof concrete which applied method of combined fiber mixed with polymer powder and organic fiber which can satisfy flowability and the fire resistance properties for construction of the super tall building. According to the results, in case of polymix it is effective to the reduction of internal temperature rise and spalling resistance so it as fire resistance that is similar to existing fiber cocktail.

  • Recent development of fiber optic sensors and wireless sensor technology, made structural health monitoring of railway structures cost effective. In this paper, a micro bending fiber optic rail pad sensors are evaluated for train axle force measurement. In order to assess the usability of FBG fiber optic sensors for short-term bridge measurement, the FBG sensors and conventional strain gauges are installed at the same points and the strain results are compared. Also the impact factors are calculated using the FBG strain responses and the results are compared with the conventional sensor responses. A running KTX train was instrumented with wireless sensor system to measure the vibration characteristics and the results are compared with conventional wire sensor system.

  • Morphology of polyester fiber was physically modified by solvent treatment. PET fiber was treated with N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) at 100, 120, $140^{circ}C$ for 10 minutes without tension. The structural changes in the morphology of DMF-induced modified PET fiber were FTIR and SEM analysis. Also dyeing behavior of DMF-treated polyester fibers with various disperse dyes was studied to detect changes of amorphous area in fine structure. DMF treatment resulted in increases in total void content, degree of crystallinity, trans isomer content, chain folding, segmental mobility and molecular packing, but it resulted in decreases in amorphous orientation, intermolecular forces and individual void size through longitudinal shrinkage, lateral welling and removal of oligomers. Void-size distribution could be estimated from the dye uptake with various sizes of disperse dyes. In contrast to the large increases in dye uptake with small dye molecules, there is no and little dye uptake with the bulkiest dye, which means that void size is bigger or smaller than the volume of each dye. Diffusion rates of dye molecules showed increases. This dyeing study revealed that the disperse dyeing is very effective method for characterizing the internal morphology of polyester fiber.
