  • The number of patients suffering from atrial fibrillation is increasing and many cardiologists is trying to develop the ideal antiarrhythmic drugs for atrial fibrillation. An ideal antiarrhythmic agent would selectively prolong the action potential duration more in extraordinarily depolarized cardiac myocytes than in normal cells, and show tissue selectivity. Voltage-gated K$\^$+/ (Kv) channels represent a structurally and functionally diverse group of membrane proteins. These channels play an important role in determining the length of the cardiac action potential and are the targets for antiarrhythmic drugs. (omitted)

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of water extract from rice bran (RB) on ADP ($20{\mu}M$)-stimulated platelet aggregation. RB dose-dependently inhibited ADP-induced platelet aggregation, and its $IC_{50}$ value was $224.0{\mu}g/mL$, which was increased by adenylate cyclase inhibitor SQ22536 and cAMP-dependent protein kinase (A-kinase) inhibitor Rp-8-Br-cAMPS. RB elevated the phosphorylation of VASP ($Ser^{157}$) which was also inhibited by SQ22536 and Rp-8-Br-cAMPS. It is thought that RB-elevated cAMP contributed to the phosphorylation of VASP ($Ser^{157}$) to inhibit ADP-induced platelet aggregation. Therefore, we demonstrate that RB has an antiplatelet effect via cAMP-dependent phosphorylation of VASP ($Ser^{157}$), and RB may have preventive or therapeutic potential for platelet aggregation-mediated diseases, such as thrombosis, myocardial infarction, atherosclerosis, and ischemic cerebrovascular disease.

  • The fungistatic and fungicidal activities of amphotericin B, fluconazole, miconazole, econazole, and 5-fluorocytosine against Saccharomyces cerevisiae were estimated in the presence of 1/2 minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and 1/2 minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of polygodial, respectively. Among them, the antifungal activities of miconazoles by polygodial was still shown against several yeast-like fungi including Candida albicans, Candida utilis, Cryptococcus neoformans, except for Candida krusei. The combination of polygodial with imidazole drugs against Saccharomyces cerevisiae was further examined using the macrobroth dilution checkerboard method. The fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) and the fractional fungicidal concentration (FFC) index between polygodial and miconazole were 0.16 and 0.19, while the combination of polygodial with econazole exhibited the FIC index of 0.19 and the FFC of 0.25, respectively. These results suggest that polygodial and the imidazoles on the fungistatic and fungicidal action are highly synergistic.

  • The author reviewed the general principle in the use of psychotropics for patients with renal diseases. who have psychiatric problems. Durgs which are dialyzable and metabolized or eliminated by kidney should not be used for patients with renal failure. However, lithium can be effectively used in a single dose$(300{\sim}600 mg/day)$ after each dialysis. though lithium has the double negative components. It is recommended that serum lithium level should be frequently monitored and the dose of lithium should be gradually increased to minimize its side effect Most of other psychotropics such as benzodiazepine anxiolytics tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants, and neuroleptics are metabolized in the liver, and they can be used in renal patients. The dose of these drugs should be reduced in two-thirds of the standard dose. In addition. it is necessary for liaison psychiatrists and other physicians to understand the interactions between psychotropics and drugs often used for treatment of renal diseases in order to prescribe psychotropics safely and effectively in renal patients.

  • A new form of sulfabenzamide was characterized using X-ray diffraction patterns and differential scanning calorimetry. Solubility studies demonstrated that, of the sulfabenzamide polymorphs, the new form was more soluble than form I. Compression of the new form at compression force of 1000 $kg/cm{^2}$ didn't induce polymorphic change in the crystal. Similar patterns were also produced through grinding. The effects of some diluents on the polymorphic transformation from the new form into form I by grinding and compression were also studied. Three diluents, $Avicel^{\circledR}$, lactose and starch showed no influence on the polymorphic transformation. The new form seemed to be more suitable for the pharmaceutical preparation.

  • "Sanghanron(傷寒論)" can be approached through the understanding of the formulas. It is very important to correlate the efficacy of drugs and pathogenesis of syndrome. In this sense, the author examines the Paeoniae Radix Alba's efficacy. The Paeoniae Radix Alba[芍藥] used in Gyejitang(桂枝湯), Galgeuntang(葛根湯), Sogeonjungtang (小建中湯), Jagyakgamchotang(芍藥甘草湯) all have a similar effect. The Paeoniae Radix Alba supplies the tendon and blood meridian with bodily fluids, so it treats the stiffness and pain of the head and neck[頭項强痛], stiffness of the neck and back[項背强几几] and acute pain in the abdomen[腹中急痛] etc. Meanwhile, the Paeoniae Radix Alba treats difficulty in urination. It moistens the path to the excretion of urine included among drugs which increase digestion and transformation.

  • Mood disorder is a medical illness resulting from the disorder of CNS neurotransmission and its principal therapeutic tool is pharmacotherapy. Psychotherapeutic drugs for mood disorder have some clinical limitations which are due to no or partial response, decreased compliance for drug by the side effects, and delayed therapeutic effects. So, general hope of all clinicians that mood diorder will respond to a single psychotherapeutic agent may be the exception rather than the rule. Recently, combined drug treatments have become increasingly popular to overcome the clinical limitations of individual agent in mood disorder. Combined treatments are usually used for augmenting or initiating rapidly the effect of drug, and for treating different target symptoms or drug side effects. When combined treatments being tried, knowledge of the action mechanism, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics is crucial to cope with the possible adverse reactions of drugs.

  • Prediction of the relations among drug and other molecular or social entities is the main knowledge discovery pattern for the purpose of drug-related knowledge discovery. Computational approaches have combined the information from different sources and levels for drug-related knowledge discovery, which provides a sophisticated comprehension of the relationship among drugs, targets, diseases, and targeted genes, at the molecular level, or relationships among drugs, usage, side effect, safety, and user preference, at a social level. In this research, previous work from the BioNLP community and matrix or matrix decomposition was reviewed, compared, and concluded, and eventually, the BioNLP open-shared task was introduced as a promising case study representing this area.

  • Obesity increases the risk of developing metabolic diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular diseases, as well as some cancers. To prevent the occurrence of these diseases and death, it is essential to manage obesity. Though there are several treatments for obesity, lifestyle interventions, such as diet and exercise, and drug therapy are most widely used in clinical practice. Among the anti-obesity drugs available, the weight loss effect of naltrexone/bupropion has been well-proven. We present a case study in which naltrexone/bupropion, a glucagon-like peptide-1 agonist, and a sodium-glucose transporter 2 inhibitor showed significant weight loss and improved metabolic parameters. Additionally, the management of type 2 diabetes and hypertension, which are common diseases in patients with obesity, was also included.
