  • An experiment to investigate the rate of change of phase angle of eddy current output signal caused by outer surface defect of nonferromagnetic tube by variation of standard depth of penetration and variation of percent of tube wall penetration was carried out. The results of the experiment show that the phase angle of defect signal is increased with decreasing the standard depth of penetration or the depth of defect. The results also show that the phase angle is decreased with increasing the skin effect of eddy current, and that the resolution is decreased with decreasing the depth of defect.

  • In general, for underwater vehicles in low speed, depthkeeping operations are carried out by using the variation of the weight in the seaway tank. The depthkeeping control of underwater vehicles is difficult because of the deadzone effect in the flow rate control valve. In this paper, the nonlinear multivariable QLQG/LTR control system using a seaway tank and bow planes is synthesized in order to improve the performance of the depth control system. The computer simulation results show the multivariable QLQG/LTR control system has good depth control performance under the deadzone effect.

  • The effect of sulfur content and inoculant on solidification microstructure and mechanical properties of gray cast iron have been investigated. The main results obtained are as follows, 1. In the FeSi3Ca1Ba inoculated irons, with the variation of sulfur content, low sulfur levels (${\sim}0.03%$) yield low chill depth, high tensile strength, good wear resistance and type A graphite with a pearlite matrix. High sulfur levels( >0.08%) provide high chill depth, low mechanical proper ties and type D graphite with small amount ferrite. 2. In case of inoculant variation with normal FeSi, FeSi3Ca1Ba, 30CaSi and uninoculation at 0.03%S level, lower chill depth and higher tensile strength was obtained in the order ; 30CaSi, FeSi3Ca1Ba normal FeSi, uninoculation.

  • Differential interferometric phases from JERS-1 Lband data sets show spatial variation of path-length ranging from a few mm to several cm. The variation may be caused by changes in soil moisture contents, i.e. variation of penetration depth and the swelling of soils. Although the amount of total effect caused by soil moisture is not measurable, it is clear that the soil moisture according to precipitation is another factor to be considered in DInSAR analysis. We also discuss DInSAR characteristics in a rice paddy according to irrigation conditions, and discrimination of hydrological features such as stream channels and watershed boundaries by applying DInSAR technique.

  • The main objective of this work is to experimentally investigate the effect of angle variation and intrusion depth of channels on the distribution of two-phase flow at header-channel junctions. The dimensions of the header and the channels in cross-section were fixed at $16mm{\times}16mm$ and $12mm{\times}1.8mm$, respectively. Air and water were used as the test fluids. Two different header-channel positions were tested : a vertical header with horizontal channels (case VM-HC) and a horizontal header with horizontal channels (case HM-HC). In all cases, the intrusion depths of the channels are 0 mm, 2 mm, and 4 mm. For the case of the intrusion depth of VM-HC, the flow distribution became more uniform. However, the intrusion depth negatively affected the flow distribution for the case of HM-HC because liquid separation delay occurred.

  • Aerosol indirect radiative forcing of climate change is considered the most uncertain forcing of climate change over the industrial period, despite numerous studies demonstrating such modification of cloud properties and several studies quantifying resulting changes in shortwave radiative fluxes. Detection of this effect is made difficult by the large inherent variability in cloud liquid water path (LWP): the dominant controlling influence of LWP on optical depth and albedo masks any aerosol influences. Here we have used ground-based remote sensing of cloud optical depth (${\tau}_c$) by narrowband radiometry and LWP by microwave radiometry to determine the dependence of optical depth on LWP, thereby permitting examination of aerosol influence. The method is limited to complete overcast conditions with liquid-phase single layer clouds, as determined mainly by millimeter wave cloud radar. The results demonstrate substantial (factor of 2) day-to-day variation in cloud drop effective radius at the ARM Southern Great Plains site that is weakly associated with variation in aerosol loading as characterized by light-scattering coefficient at the surface. The substantial scatter suggests the importance of meteorological influences on cloud drop size as well, which should be analyzed in the further intensive studies. Meanwhile, it is notable that the decrease in cloud drop effective radius results in marked increase in cloud albedo.

  • We investigated the exchange bias fields at the NiFe/FeMn and FeMn/CoFe interfaces in 18.9-nm NiFe/15.0-nm FeMn/17.6-nm CoFe trilayer thin films as the annealing temperature was varied from room temperature to $250^{\circ}C$ in a vacuum for 1 hour in a magnetic field of 150 Oe. Interestingly, magnetic hysteresis (M-H) measurements showed that NiFe/FeMn/CoFe trilayer thin films exhibited a completely contrasting variation of the exchange bias fields at both the NiFe/FeMn and FeMn/CoFe interfaces with annealing temperatures. High-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements indicated the absence of any discernible effect of thermal treatment on the NiFe(111) and FeMn(111) peaks. The compositional depth profile obtained from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results presented the asymmetric compositional depth profiles of the Mn and Fe atoms throughout the FeMn layer. We contend that this asymmetric compositional depth profile and the preferential Mn diffusion into the NiFe layer, compared to that into the CoFe layer, are conclusive experimental evidence of the contrasting variation of the exchange bias fields at two interfaces having a common polycrystalline FeMn(111) layer.

  • The effects of atmospheric thermal loads on the response of structural elements that are exposed to open environments have been recognized by research works and design specifications. The main source of atmospheric heat is solar radiation, which dominates the variation of the temperature of air, earth surface and all exposed objects. The temperature distribution along the depth of steel members may differ with the geometry configuration, which means that the different-configuration steel members may suffer different thermally induced strains and stresses. In this research, an experimental steel beam was instrumented with many thermocouples in addition to other sensors. Surface temperatures, air temperature, solar radiation and wind speed measurements were recorded continuously for 21 summer days. Based on a finite element thermal analysis, which was verified using the experimental records, several parametric studies were directed to investigate the effect of the geometrical parameters of AISC standard steel sections on their thermal response. The results showed that the overall size of the beam, its depth and the thickness of its elements are of significant effect on vertical temperature distributions and temperature differences.

  • A study was conducted to find distribution patterns of minisprinkler without a bridge for the desing of microirrigation systems. The experiments were executed in a plastic house to minimize the effect of the wind. Data were collected at four different operation pressures and at 3 different riser heights. Sprayed water were collected by aluminium cans with 65mm diameter and 100mm height placed at 0.3m grid spacing . A schematic distribution pattern with distance from a minisprinkler was suggested for the layout design of the minisprinkler. Distribution pattern of the minisprinkler was found irregular in space. Distributin performance characteristics of the minisprinkler such as effective radius. , effective area, mean application depth, absolute maximum application depth, effective maximum application depth and coefficient of variation were determined. It was indicated that there is a trend of decrease in variation coefficient adn better water distribution by the increase in operation pressures and riser heights.

  • The design storm is a crucial element in urban drainage design and hydrological modeling. The total rainfall depth of a design storm is usually estimated by hydrological frequency analysis using historic rainfall records. The different geostatistical approaches (ordinary kriging, universal kriging) have been used as estimators and their results are compared and discussed. Variogram parameters, the sill, nugget effect and influence range, are analysis. Kriging method was applied for developing contour maps of design storm depths In bocheong stream basin. Effect to utilize weather radar data and grid-based basin model on the spatial variation characteristics of storm requires further study.
