In Korean society, universities represent institutions of higher education. Industrialization and economic development led to a small number of elite groups at the helm of these institutions. However, our society has encouraged a lifelong system of learning, and apparently, the present university system does not represent an ideal scenario. The Korean government recognized the need for appropriate changes. The events associated with the implementation of related policies occurred at the Ewha Womans University (Seoul) last year. This article is based on the notion of lifelong education to further our understanding of the role of university in the absence of a consensus among university and college members regarding lifelong learning in our society. As an alternative, we looked at the case of France, which is adopting a lifelong education system and implementing related policies ahead of us. Despite regulatory challenges and adaptation of the role of public education in lifelong learning, France has laid a solid foundation. In our case, we are recognizing the need to prepare for lifelong learning. In particular, it is necessary to increase public awareness of education by clearly recognizing our national responsibility and increasing the financial support to universities, accordingly. Above all, the role and attitude of universities must change, along with the perception of its members.

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of sleep duration on stress and depression in college students. The results obtained will be used as a foundational framework for fostering a healthy sleep culture among college students and for formulating measures to improve the quality of their sleep. Ultimately, we intend to produce a publicity and educational material. Methods : For this study, a survey involving 100 college students was conducted, after which data based on a final total of 95 respondents were analyzed. The information on stress and depression were first analyzed in terms of general characteristics and then organized based on the data collected to investigate the effects of sleep duration on stress and depression. The participants were divided into the following groups: "less than 6 hours," "6 to 7 hours," and "7 to 8 hours." BEPSI-K (Brief encounter psychosocial instrument-Korean) was used for stress evaluation, while K-CESD-R (Korean version of center for epidemiologic studies depression scale-revised) was utilized for depression evaluation. Results : First, according to sleep duration, the BEPSI-K scores showed a statistically significant difference in each group (p<.01). In the post-hoc test, there was a difference among the "less than 6 hours" group, the "7 to 8 hours" group. A statistically significant difference was noted (p<.01). In addition, sleep duration had a statistically significant effect on the negative (-) direction of the BEPSI-K (p<.01). Second, the K-CESD-R score according to sleep duration showed a statistically significant difference in each group (p<.01). Notably, in the post-hoc test, the "less than 6 hours" group differed from the "6 to 7 hours" group, "7 to 8 hours" group. A statistically significant difference was noted (p<.01). In addition, sleep duration had a statistically significant effect on the negative (-) direction of the K-CESD-R (p<.01). Third, for the correlation between sleep duration and stress and depression, a negative (-) correlation was found between sleep duration and BEPSI-K and K-CESD-R. Meanwhile, a positive (+) correlation was found between BEPSI-K and K-CESD-R. Conclusion : Based on the findings of this study, the sleep duration of college students has an effect on stress and depression. The results of this study can be used as a foundational framework in formulating a plan for improving the quality of sleep of college students.

This study aims to explore the epistemic goals that pre-service elementary teachers can construct in their biology-related knowledge construction activities, how these goals are constructed, and how the shaping of the knowledge construction activities around the goals was afforded or constrained. The research participants were 26 pre-service teachers, divided into 11 groups of two or three to engage in the activity. Their discussions and products were collected and used as data for this study. The analysis revealed that the teachers constructed three types of epistemic goals: making sense of natural phenomena, proposing the most effective course of action, and proposing solutions to problems based on their causes. Construction of different types of goals depended on the conclusions the pre-service teachers expected to draw based on the explored natural phenomena. It was found that the elicitation of the pre-service teachers' epistemic goals could facilitate their shaping of the knowledge construction activity as an evidence-based justification. The participants planned the construction of mechanistic explanations of natural phenomena with the epistemic goals of 'making sense of natural phenomena' or 'proposing solutions to problems based on their causes.' However, enacting their knowledge construction plans with sophisticated epistemic features was constrained due to the limited resources available. This study can contribute to developing instructional strategies that facilitate learners' epistemic agency and addressing epistemic agency in the development of pre-service teacher education methods.

Vietnam is a country where the largest number of Korean companies have branched out, and calibers who can speak Vietnamese are on great demands. In the multicultural classroom, students of Vietnamese background occupy the first or second largest composition among students with multicultural backgrounds; therefore, if teachers can teach in Vietnamese, the positive effects can be promising. This study presents and evaluates a Vietnamese language class developed and operated for the first time in Korea by a university to raise prospective teachers' global-multicultural competences. Two series of the classes were conducted during two vacations of 2018, and 20 students participated. As a results, the groups showed a significant increase in the global-multicultural competences; About 95 percent of the participants demonstrated improvement in the competences. The participants stated opinions: the classes should expand to offer opportunities for many other students who may want to acquire Vietnamese; the participants had better understandings of the Vietnamese cultures, envisioned their role as a Vietnamese speaker and suggested extended opportunities for contacts with Vietnamese cultures. The study hopes that other universities apply the educational model and the case study and that, as a result, teachers can contribute to building harmonious Korean-Vietnamese relations using Vietnamese.
In this study, we analyzed the preparedness of Korean citizens for earthquake hazards. For this purpose, we developed a questionnaire on the preparedness of citizens for earthquake hazards, consisting of three constructs (knowledge, awareness, and management). A total of 1,256 citizen responses were collected through probability proportionate-to-size sampling and then subjected to Rasch analysis, inferential statistical analysis, and cluster analysis. The findings are as follows. First, questionnaire analysis showed that overall, the earthquake preparedness of citizens was 'normal', with a lower management score than knowledge and awareness scores. Second, analysis of variables related to preparedness for earthquake hazards, gender, education level, actual distance, and safety awareness were found to influence preparedness for earthquake hazards. Third, correlation analysis revealed a high correlation between the three constructs of preparedness for earthquake hazards, namely knowledge, awareness, and management, indicating a structurally close relationship with each other. In addition, even if gender and education level differed, these structural correlations were similar. Through cluster analysis, the citizens were further divided into five groups; the group with moderate levels of the three constructs accounted for the majority of citizens. Considering these findings, we propose an educational orientation that fosters the preparedness of citizens for earthquake hazards.

Purpose : This study aimed to present normative data and cut-off points for older Korean adults completing the Montreal Cognitive Assessment - Korean (MoCA-K), which is used as a screening test for mild cognitive impairment in Korea. Methods : A total of 195 healthy adults ≥60 years were recruited. All participants completed the MoCA-K and the Korean - Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-K) to assess their cognitive function. Participants were divided into six groups based on their age: 60-64 years, 65~69 years, 70~74 years, 75~79 years, 80~84 years, and 85~89 years. Results : The results revealed that MoCA-K score decreased significantly with age (mean score ± standard deviation [SD]; 27.63±2.80 in subjects aged 60~64 years; 27.00±2.39 in subjects aged 65~69 years; 24.94±2.96 in subjects aged 70~74 years; 24.74±3.37 in subjects aged 75~79 years; 22.59±4.72 in subjects aged 80~84 years; and 18.83±5.38 in subjects aged 85~89 years; p<.001). Additionally, MoCA-K score also increased significantly with educational level (mean score±standard deviation [SD]; 19.95±4.78 in no formal education group; 24.95±2.22 in elementary school graduated group; 26.35±2.72 in middle school graduated group; 28.32±1.36 in high school graduated group; and 28.50±1.51 in more than college graduated group; p<.001). The optimal cut-off points were 24/25 for 60~69 years old group, 21/22 for 70~79 years old group, 17/18 for 80~84 years old group, and 13/14 for 85~89 years old group. The optimal cut-off points were 15/16 for individuals who were illiterate, 22/23 for individuals with 6 years of education, 22/24 for individuals with 9 years of education, and 26/27 for individuals with 12 or more years of education. Conclusions : This study presents normative data and cut-off points for the MoCA-K in older Korean adults. This data will facilitate more accurate detection and follow-up of the risk of mild cognitive impairment in this population, taking into consideration age and education. Future studies are required that should focus on the cut-off score on the level of education according to age.
The purpose of this study is to establish well-dying education, well-dying culture, and industrialization for well-aging. For this, data was collected through Gallup Korea from February 1, 2021 to February 22, 2021. As a result of the study, well-dying education experience was 4.7%, and education satisfaction was surveyed with 2.88 points out of 5. As a result of analyzing the needs of well-dying education according to the age groups, the educational demands of youth and middle-aged were in the order of hospice education and information, life-sustaining medical information, and funeral information. In the case of the young old, it was in the order of hospice education and information, funeral information, and psychological overcoming related to death. In the case of the elderly, the survey was conducted in the order of hospice education and information, funeral information, and life-care related information. The perception of industrialization related to the well-dying culture was inspected in the order of the well-dying café where you can talk about life and death, the well-dying experience such as the entrance experience, and the development of travel products related to culture and art (p<0.05). Such results can be usefully utilized in the development of well-dying education programs for well aging, cultural spreading, and industrialization.
This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the observation ability and scientific creativity of elementary students through observation learning of outdoor plants and to identify the factors that influence the two constructs. The study recruited 21 fifth-graders in Seoul. After evaluating observation ability and scientific creativity through observation tasks, qualitative data were obtained through interviews with students about their observation of the plants. Additionally, the study collected various materials, such as the observation records and worksheets of the students to verify the validity of research. The main results of this study are as follows. First, the students were first classified into four groups according to levels of observation ability and scientific creativity. The result demonstrated that the higher the level of observation ability, the higher the level of scientific creativity. Second, observation ability and scientific creativity pointed to a positive correlation. Furthermore, originality, which is one of the components of scientific creativity, indicated a weak positive correlation with observation ability. Third, the factors that influenced observation ability were frequency of plant observation and interest and cooperation in observation learning, and those of scientific creativity were observation ability and the level of plant-related knowledge. Lastly, the study discussed educational methods for improving observation ability and scientific creativity.

The purpose of this study was to provide fundamental data to cosmetic waxing industry by investigating the using and awareness of cosmetic waxing. The questionnaires were administered to 230 subjects in Gwangju and Jeon-nam regions and the collected were statistically processed using SPSS ver. 21.0 program. The results are as follows: First, the most frequent groups were 20s in age group, married in marital status, professional in occupation, and high school graduation in educational background. For the difference in awareness by their general characteristics, the hair removal techniques most experienced by subjects were shaving and waxing and most of them came to know the waxing through acquaintance. Most of them reported positive awareness for experience of waxing and clean hygiene and neatness accounted for most of reason. The most frequently used place for waxing was professional cosmetic shops (nail, skin, and hair) and the most frequent motivation for waxing was effectiveness for skin hygiene. The areas where waxing is mainly performed were armpit, arm, and leg. The most of subjects received the procedure twice a month and in spring. Most of them reported 'very satisfied' for the procedure. It is expected, based on the results of this study, that the cosmetic waxing industry as a part of the beauty industry that is attracting attentions as a new growth engine for the development of national economy accomplish growth.

The aim of this study was to examine the impacts of pre-briefing using structured video simulations in the pre-hospital trauma care simulation-based education on simulation immersion, simulation confidence, and simulation satisfaction. For both the experimental group and the control group, orientations were conducted on the simulation environment. Subsequently, the experimental group watched a video of about 8 minutes, similar to the scenario situation, in which the goal and result of the training were presented. The control group, on the other hand, conducted a classical way of orientation related to the scenario during the same time period. In addition, the experimental group and the control group underwent simulation practice in the same situation for 12 minutes, and debriefing was performed for 40 minutes by the same research assistant. Afterwards, we measured the simulation immersion, confidence, and satisfaction of the participants. Data were analyzed using χ2 and independent t-test using the SPSS 22.0 program. It was found that the experimental group that conducted the pre-briefing using video had higher immersion and confidence than the control group. On the other hand, satisfaction was not significantly different between the two groups. The results indicate that pre-briefing using structured video was an effective educational method to increase simulation immersion and simulation confidence.
