Purpose: This study was to identify topics for evidence-based clinical nursing practice guidelines in Korea. Methods: Data were collected from 330 staff nurses from 10 general hospitals and 53 nurses in charge of nursing education in 110 hospitals with over 500 beds. Using open questions, the nurses identified activities which could not be verified, which lacked consistency among nurses, clinical units and/or hospitals, which were not based on the up-to-date knowledge and which needed reform. The data were analysed by content analysis using a qualitative methodology. Results: Collected data consisted of 1882 clinical topics, which were classified into 50 topics, 207 mid-categories, and 456 sub-categories. The most frequent topics in order of frequency were medications, central line management, intravenous injections, urinary catheterization, perioperative nursing care, skin tests, pressure ulcer care, blood transfusions, laboratory examination-culture, respiratory care which were performed routinely in clinical setting by staff nurses. Conclusion: The research findings indicate the urgent need to develop evidence-based clinical nursing practice guidelines related to these research findings. Further research is needed to identify topics related to health promotion, and symptom/management of health problem.
Purpose: The study was to survey personal hygiene practice related to genito-urinary tract and menstrual hygiene management in female adolescents in order to obtain basic information for health education. Methods: With a descriptive survey design, 389 adolescents were recruited via convenience sampling in Korea. Survey instrument was the feminine and menstrual hygiene practice and perception of vaginal douching. Data were collected from a self-administered structured questionnaire. Results: Mean age of adolescents was 16.09 and menarche was at 13.21. While washing hands after urination/defecation was highly performed, wipe front to back and wash with soap and water were reported as being not well done. Twenty-eight percent reported douching habit. More positive beliefs about douching were reported by adolescents who practiced douching. Menstrual hygiene management was very appropriate with changing sanitary pads regularly with hand washing; but less performed for limiting bathing activity during menstrual periods and washing hands after activity of genito-urinary area. Conclusion: Some adolescents practiced inadequate hygiene practices especially for body cleansing during menstrual period and vaginal douching. It is important to develop and implement school health education programs on feminine and personal hygiene for adolescents to help them perform adequate health behaviors.

Methods: The guideline have been revised in 22 steps based on international standards. The quality of the practice guidelines to be used for revision was evaluated using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II. The evaluation of the content appropriateness and applicability of the draft recommendations of the revised practice guidelines was performed using the RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method, a decision-making method developed by the RAND Corporation. Four guidelines were used for the revision. Results: The updated nursing practice guideline for IUC consisted of 9 domains and 134 recommendations. The numbers of recommendations in each domain were: 4 Assessment, 20 Equipment, 11 Catheter insertion, 52 Catheter maintenance, 4 Catheter and drainage bag change, 9 Catheter removal, 22 Complications management, 5 Education and consult, and 7 Hospital support. The recommended grade was 8.2% for A, 38.1% for B, and 53.7% for C. Among these, the major revision was done in 11 recommendations (8.2%). A total of 29 recommendations (21.6%) were newly added. 30 (22.4%) recommendations had minor revisions such as changes or addition for some words or sentences, and 13 (9.7%) recommendations were deleted. Conclusion: Revised nursing practice guideline is expected to serve as an evidence-based practice guideline for IUC in Korea. This guideline will provide health care providers, patients, and caregivers with information to help manage IUC, leading to improved patient outcomes.
Purpose: The aim of the study was to identify the effects of education from using cellular phones and a short messaging service. Methods: Collected data included baseline demographics, blood pressure, abdominal circumference, total cholesterol, body mass index and health behavior index (Dietary Practice Guidelines Score, Physical Activity, Drinking frequency, Stress score, Subjective health status, and Action change stage score). Results: Following the education of using short messaging service of cellular phones Health risk group was a reduction in the systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, waist circumference. Disease management group was a reduction in the systolic blood pressure and body mass index. In both groups, there were improvement in the Health behavior index; dietary practice guidelines score, physical activity, stress score, subjective health status and action change stage scores. Conclusion: These results indicated that education using short messaging service of cellular phone for Community was effective in improving health behaviors and status. By applying the results, development of customized teaching messages for stable settlement is required.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the perception and practice of hospital infection control of nursing staff in long-term care hospitals by the level of supplementation of nurses. Methods: The participants were 212 nurses and nurse assistants in 13 long-term care hospitals in a metropolitan city and the data were gathered by self-reported questionnaires during August 2011 and analyzed by SPSS/WIN program. Results: The beds per a nurse were 15, and the proportion of nurses among nursing staff in long-term care hospitals was about 33%. In general, the level of infection control in practice was lower than that of perception. The highest perception and practice domain was 'Management of disinfection/contamination', and the lower level domains were 'Personal hygiene' and 'Hand washing' There were statistically significant differences in the hospital infection control of perception and practice depending on age, education, career in long-term care hospital, job position, the quantity of beds, nurse, and nurse assistant, beds per a nurse and proportion of nurses in hospitals. Conclusion: According to these results, the systematic and continual education on hospital infection control of the nursing staff in long-term hospitals should be carried out. In addition, the policy to add more nurses into long-term care hospitals must be implemented.
Purpose: This study was conducted to compare the level of health concern and the health practice of adult women depending on their experiences with cosmetic tattooing. Methods: The participants were 396 adult women in Jeonnam and Jeonbuk Provinces and G City. Their levels of health concern were measured using the 5-point-5-item scale designed by Kim. For measuring their health practice, the 5-point-12-item scale designed by Kwak was used. Results: The percentage of cosmetic tattooed women was 58.8%. The average score of their health concern was 3.12 and that of their health practice 3.54. As for their levels of health concern, no differences were observed between those with cosmetic tattoo experience and those without. However, the group with cosmetic tattoo experience exhibited a higher level of health practice. Also, most members of the cosmetic tattooed group decided to visit their tattoo shops based on the availability of tattoo shapes or prices rather than considering infection risks. Conclusion: Health education is necessary to increase people's sensitivity to infection. This study shows that urgent attention for the management and regulation of the relevant ministries is required. Also, this study provides foundational information that will serve health education.

This study investigated the degree of self-care practice to maintain the stable respiratory function and the required respiratory nursing needs upon the elderly with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. The research subjects were 115 elderly people over 60 years old, who were diagnosed to have chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (the mixed type, chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, emphysema) and were hospitalized in 3 university hospitals in Busan or treated as outpatient, and the data was collected over the period between June 1, 2002 and September 30, 2002. In order to measure the respiratory self-care practice degree and nursing needs of the subjects, the instrument on the self-care practice and the instrument on nursing needs were developed by the researcher. The research results are as follows: 1. The mean of respiratory self-care practice degree by the subjects was 2.41 out of 4 for each clause, and the degree of practicing general management was the highest(2.70), and nutrition control(2.66), respiratory exercise(2.65), expectoration of sputum (2.63), oxygen therapy(2.60), environment control(2.50), and medication control(2.36) succeeded. 2. The degree of self-care practice had a significant difference depending on age(F=2.82, P=0.02), frequency of hospitalization(F=3.11, P=0.01), and diagnosed disease(F=15.66, P=0.00). 3. The subjects nursing needs of respiratory system were 3.07 on the average out of 4.00, and 'I want to know how to prevent the infection of respiratory system such as cold scored the highest 3.83, while the clauses like 'want to know how to face the respiratory disorder properly'(3.77) and 'want the specific explanation of the symptoms of my disease'(3.66) also had scored high points. 4. The nursing needs of the respiratory system had a significant difference depending on diagnosed disease such as mixed type of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, emphysema, bronchitis, and asthma (F=6.70, P=0.00). The research showed that the subjects degree of self-care practice of respiratory system was low on the whole, while the nursing needs for managing respiratory organ were relatively high. Therefore, specific education concerning the nursing of the disease and self-care upon the elderly having chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is necessary.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of an educational intervention by evaluating neonatal emergency airway management knowledge, critical thinking disposition, problem-solving ability, and confidence in clinical performance after developing and operating a simulation-based neonatal emergency airway management education program for nurses in a neonatal intensive care unit. Methods: The participants were 30 nurses in a neonatal intensive care unit. Data were collected from June 6 to 15, 2018 and analyzed using IBM SPSS version 22.0. Results: The results of the pretest and posttest for each educational group showed statistically significant improvements in neonatal emergency airway management knowledge, critical thinking, problem-solving ability, and confidence in clinical performance. Conclusion: The simulation-based neonatal emergency airway management training program was an effective educational program that enhanced neonatal emergency airway management knowledge, critical thinking disposition, problem-solving ability, and confidence in clinical performance among nurses in a neonatal intensive care unit. Therefore, it is suggested that the program described in this study can contribute to improving nursing quality by enhancing the ability of nurses to cope with emergencies in practice. It can also be used for education for new nurses and contribute to the development of nurses' practices.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe nurses' recognition of, and practice level in management of general nosocomial infections, and methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) infections. Method: A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were collected on June, 2003 from 190 nurses in one university affiliated hospital located in Suwon. Result: The mean score for nurses' recognition of general nosocomial infection control was 3.57, MRSA control was 3.54, and VRE control was 3.86. The mean score on practice for control of general nosocomial infection was 3.19, for MRSA control, 3.20, and for VRE control, 3.63. There were statistically significant relationships between the recognition level and practice level for general nosocomial, MRSA, and VRE infection control. According to the general characteristics of the nurses, the mean scores for both recognition and practice were higher for those nurses who had had infection control education, for those who had worked longer in nursing, and for those who worked in the ICU. Conclusion: It is suggested that appropriate hospital infection control programs should be developed through continuous education and practice to improve nurses' level of the practice in general infection control, and especially in MRSA and VRE infection control.
