  • Medical education, competency, and outcome-based medical education started as part of the basic medical education curriculum in advanced countries 20 years ago, and such an approach was adopted in residency training. General competency training is at the core of residency training in advanced countries, and it goes beyond competency and outcome-based training to the extent that in a milestone training system, competency development is expected and measured with set competency achievements at each level. Recently, for the purpose of ensuring that doctors uphold patient safety and fulfill their obligations, entrustable professional activities (EPA) were applied at the beginning of residency when doctors move away from clinical trials and start actual care. The adoption of EPA in all residency training curriculum has spread very rapidly in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. Presently, Korea lags behind other countries significantly as the adoption of competency and outcome-based medical education in residency training has just begun. It is time to identify the current state of the Korean residency training system, and then design and practice a well-established system with a long-term view based on cooperation across the whole medical industry.

  • The period of military personnel service will be phased down by 2014 according to 'The law of National Defense Reformation' issued by the Ministry of National Defense. For this reason, the ROK army provides discrimination education to 'newly recruited privates' for more effective individual performance in the on-the-job training. For the training to be more effective, it would be essential to predict the degree of achievements by new privates in the training. Thus, we used data mining techniques to develop a classification model which classifies the new privates into one of two achievements groups, so that different skills of education are applied to each group. The target variable for this model is a binary variable, whose value can be either 'a group of general control' or 'a group of special control'. We developed four pure classification models using Neural Network, Decision Tree, Support Vector Machine and Naive Bayesian. We also built four hybrid models, each of which combines k-means clustering algorithm with one of these four mining technique. Experimental results demonstrated that the highest performance model was the hybrid model of k-means and Neural Network. We expect that various military education programs could be supported by these classification models for better educational performance.

  • Nowadays application of modem achievements of information technologies in science, engineering and education is usual phenomenon. Application of these technologies allows easily creating new methods of learning of mathematics. More of new methods of creation of multimedia electronic manuals on high mathematics are founded to application of multimedia and communication opportunities of the computer. But application only multimedia and communication opportunities of the computer at creation of multimedia electronic manuals on high mathematics is insufficient to elimination of 'gap' between training and studying high mathematics. So, we offer a new way of the decision of this problem: creation of a multimedia electronic manual on high mathematics with built-in a mathematical environment MathCad in the national language.
