  • The flow around a foil with waterjet was investigated using the two-frame PIV(CACTUS 3.1) system. After separation, unsteady recirculation & reattachment region was shown as a result at reading edge. Separation area was decreased to 1/3 more by waterjet system with coanda effect. Angle of attack and waterjet velocity was a variable in the experiment. Each parameters was controlled to $0^{\circ}{\sim}35^{\circ}$ and 0[m/s]${\sim}$9.2[m/s]. The separation of flow appearanced at first when the angle of attack is $17^{\circ}{\sim}18^{\circ}$. However, according to grew up of velocity, beginning of the separation was delayed. In this experiment, vortex and separation region was disappeared by blown when each parameters are low level, and separation controlled more certainly.

  • The BARC flow is studied via Direct Numerical Simulation at a relatively low turbulent Reynolds number, with focus on the geometrical representation of the leading-edge (LE) corners. The study contributes to further our understanding of the discrepancies between existing numerical and experimental BARC data. In a first part, rounded LE corners with small curvature radii are considered. Results show that a small amount of rounding does not lead to abrupt changes of the mean fields, but that the effects increase with the curvature radius. The shear layer separates from the rounded LE at a lower angle, which reduces the size of the main recirculating region over the cylinder side. In contrast, the longitudinal size of the recirculating region behind the trailing edge (TE) increases, as the TE shear layer is accelerated. The effect of the curvature radii on the turbulent kinetic energy and on its production, dissipation and transport are addressed. The present results should be contrasted with the recent work of Rocchio et al. (2020), who found via implicit Large-Eddy Simulations at larger Reynolds numbers that even a small curvature radius leads to significant changes of the mean flow. In a second part, the LE corners are fully sharp and the exact analytical solution of the Stokes problem in the neighbourhood of the corners is used to locally restore the solution accuracy degraded by the singularity. Changes in the mean flow reveal that the analytical correction leads to streamlines that better follow the corners. The flow separates from the LE with a lower angle, resulting in a slightly smaller recirculating region. The corner-correction approach is valuable in general, and is expected to help developing high-quality numerical simulations at the high Reynolds numbers typical of the experiments with reasonable meshing requirements.

  • Immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann method has been applied to analyze the characteristics of the self-propelled fish motion swimming robot. The airfoil NACA0012 with caudal fin stroke model was considered to examine the characteristics. The foil in steady forward motion and a combination of steady-state harmonic deformation produces thrust through the formation of a flow downstream from the trailing edge. The harmonic motion of the foil causes unsteady shedding of vorticity from the trailing edge, while forming the vortices at the leading edge as well. The resultant thrust is developed by the pressure difference formed on the upper and lower surface of the airfoil. and the time averaged thrust coefficient increases as Re increase in the region of $Re{\leqq}700$. The suggested numerical method is suitable to develop the fish-motion model to control the swimming robot, however It would need to extend in 3D analysis to examine the higher Re and to determine the more detail mechanism of thrust production.

  • Delaminations and cracks are common failures in structures. They may significantly reduce the stiffness of the structure and affect their vibration characteristics. In the present study, an analytical solution is developed to study the effect of an edge crack on the vibration characteristics of delaminated beams. The rotational spring model, the 'free mode' and 'constrained mode' assumptions in delamination vibration are adopted. This is the first study on how an edge crack affects the vibration characteristic of delaminated beams and new nondimensional parameters are developed accordingly. The crack may occur inside or outside the delaminated area and both cases are studied. Results show that the effect of delamination length and thickness-wise location on reducing the natural frequencies is aggravated by an increasing crack depth. The location of the crack also influences the effect of delamination, but such influence is different between crack occurring inside and outside the delaminated area. The difference of natural frequencies between 'free mode' and 'constrained mode' increases then decreases as the crack moves from one side of the delaminated region to the other side, peaking at the middle. The analytical results of this study can serve as the benchmark for FEM and other numerical solutions.

  • Experimental study was performed to investigate the flow behavior in boundary layer on the blade suction surface of a multi-stage axial flow compressor, which was focused on the third stage of the 4-stage Low Speed Research Compressor. Flow measurements in the boundary layer were obtained using a boundary layer hot wire probe, which was traversed normal to the blade suction surface at small increments by the probe traverse specially designed. Detailed boundary layer flow measurements covering most of the stator suction surface were taken and are described using time mean and ensemble averaged velocity profiles. Amplitude of the velocity fluctuation and turbulence intensity in the boundary layer flow are also discussed. At midspan, narrow but strong wake zone due to passing wake disturbances is generated in the boundary layer near the blade leading edge for the rotor blade passing period. Corner separation is observed at the tip region near the trailing edge, which causes to increase steeply the boundary layer thickness.

  • In this work, we propose a new idea of flapping airfoil design for optimal aerodynamic performance from detailed computational investigations of flow physics. Generally, flapping motion which is combined with pitching and plunging motion of airfoil, leads to complex flow features such as leading edge separation and vortex street. As it is well known, the mechanism of thrust generation of flapping airfoil is based on inverse Karman-vortex street. This vortex street induces jet-like flow field at the rear region of trailing edge and then generates thrust. The leading edge separation vortex can also play an important role with its aerodynamic performances. The flapping airfoil introduces an alternative propulsive way instead of the current inefficient propulsive system such as a propeller in the low Reynolds number flow. Thrust coefficient and propulsive efficiency are the two major parameters in the design of flapping airfoil as propulsive system. Through numerous computations, we found the specific physical flow phenomenon which governed the aerodynamic characteristics in flapping airfoil. Based on this physical insight, we could come up with a new kind of airfoil of tadpole-shaped and more enhanced aerodynamic performance.

  • Halftoning of gray-scale image is a process to produce a binary image. The error diffusion halftoning method produces high qualify binary image but that has some defects such as sharpening and directional artifacts. We propose the threshold modulation to reduce such defects. The proposed algorithm uses thresholds reflecting local characteristic of image. We calculate thresholds which minimize errors of flat region of each gray-scale level by using a linear gain between original image and error-diffused image and then represent edge by compensating thresholds in proportion to edge information. The proposed method improves on halftone quality by minimizing an error which cause sharpening and directional artifact.

  • This paper proposes a new dynamic PCA algorithm to recognize types of electric poles, which is necessary for a mobile robot moving along the neutral line for inspecting high-voltage facilities. Since the mobile robot needs to pass over the electric poles and grasp the neutral wire again for the next region inspection, the detection of the electric pole type is a critical factor for the successful passing-over the electric pole. The CCD camera installed on the mobile robot captures the image of the electric pole while it is approaching to the electric pole. Applying the dynamic PCA algorithm to the CCD image, the electric pole type has been classified to provide the stable grasping operation for the mobile robot. The new dynamic PCA algorithm replaces the reference image in real time to improve the robustness of the PCA algorithm, adjusts the brightness to get the clear images, and applies the Laplacian edge detection algorithm to increase the recognition rate of electric pole type. Through the real experiments, the effectiveness of this proposed dynamic PCA algorithm method using Laplacian edge detecting method has been demonstrated, which improves the recognition rate about 20% comparing to the conventional PCA algorithm.

  • A linear feature often provide sufficient information for image understanding and coding. An objective of the research reported in this paper is to develop and analyze the reliable methods of extracting lines in gray scale images. The Hough Transform is known as one of the optimal paradigms to detect or identify the linear features by transforming edges in images into peaks in parameter space. The scheme proposed here uses the fuzzy gradient direction model and weights the gradient magnitudes for deciding the voting values to be accumulated in parameter space. This leads to significant computational savings by restricting the transform to within some support region of the observed gradient direction which can be considered as a fuzzy variable and produces robust results.

  • A novel algorithm using 2D tensor voting and edge-based approach is proposed for text detection in natural scene images. The tensor voting is used based on the fact that characters in a text line are usually close together on a smooth curve and therefore the tokens corresponding to centers of these characters have high curve saliency values. First, a suitable edge-based method is used to find all possible text regions. Since the false positive rate of text detection result generated from the edge-based method is high, 2D tensor voting is applied to remove false positives and find only text regions. The experimental results show that our method successfully detects text regions in many complex natural scene images.
