  • In this paper, a flame and smoke detection algorithm is proposed to recognize a fire. Flame and smoke have specific color distribution and continuously change shapes of them. In the proposed flame detection algorithm, specific regions are candidated as flame by color distributions and variations of frames of video. Some of candidated regions are decided as flame by the magnitude of motion vector. To determine smoke in the field of view of camera, edge is important because high frequency component is decreased by it. Candidated region of smoke is assigned by color distributions, inter-frame differences and the value of edge. The candidated region is settled as smoke region with magnitude of motion vector. As results of simulations, it is shown that the proposed algorithm is useful for flame and smoke detection.

  • This thesis proposes a face detection algorithm using the color and edge informations in color image. The proposed algorithm segments skin color by Cb and Cr in YCbCr coordinates. Then face candidate regions are made after morphological filtering and labeling. For the regions, the Sobel vortical operation and horizontal projection are performed in the Y luminance components. The peak value indicates the eye location. Similarly, the chin location is detected by the Sobel horizontal operation and horizontal projection. The computer simulation shows that the proposed method gains similar detection rates of previous method and prevent facial region from including neck by detection of chin.

  • We examine the morphology and luminosity distribution of a strongly warped spiral galaxy PGC 20348 by conducting a detailed BVI CCD surface photometry using BOAO 1.8m telescope. The radial surface brightness shows a break at warp radius $(r_{\omega})$ with a shallow gradient in the inner disk and a steeper gradient in the outer disk. The luminosity of east side of the disk is ${\sim}0.5$ mag fainter than the west side at r > $r_{\omega}$. The reason for the asymmetric luminosity distribution is thought to be the asymmetric flarings that result in the formation of a large diffuse region at the edge of the east disk and a smaller diffuse region at the west disk. The vertical luminosity profiles show a thick disk component whose scale heights increase with increasing galactocentric distances. The warp of PGC 20348 seems to be made by the tidal interactions with the two massive companion galaxies since the flarings and radial increase of disk scale heights are thought to be general properties of tidally perturbed disks. According to the colors of the two clumps inside the diffuse region at the edge of the east disk, they seem to be sites of active star formation triggered by tidal forces from the companion galaxies.

  • We tried to build human models based on medical images of live Korean, instead of using standard data of human body structures. Characteristics of mechanical structures of human bodies were obtained from medical images such as CT and MR images. For each constitutional part of mechanical structures CT images were analyzed in terms of gray levels and MR images were analyzed in terms of pulse sequence. Characteristic features of various mechanical structures were extracted from the analyses. Based on the characteristics of each structuring element we peformed image segmentation on CT and MR images. We delineated bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons from CT and MR images using image segmentation or manual drawing. For the image segmentation we compared the edge detection method, region growing method and intensity threshold method and applied an optimal compound of these methods for the best segmentation results. Segmented mechanical structures of the head/neck part were three dimensionally reconstructed.

  • A face recognition has been used for verifying and authorizing valid users, but its applications have been restricted according to lighting conditions. In order to minimizing the restricted conditions, this paper proposes a new algorithm of detecting the face from the input image obtained under the irregular lighting condition. First, the proposed algorithm extracts an edge difference image from the input image where a skin color and a face contour are disappeared due to the background color or the lighting direction. In the next step, it extracts a face region using the histogram of the edge difference image and the intensity information. Using the intensity information, the face region is divided into the horizontal regions with feasible facial features. The each of horizontal regions is classified as three groups with the facial features(including eye, nose, and mouth) and the facial features are extracted using empirical properties of the facial features. Only when the facial features satisfy their topological rules, the face region is considered as a face. It has been proved by the experiments that the proposed algorithm can detect faces even when the large portion of face contour is lost due to the inadequate lighting condition or the image background color is similar to the skin color.

  • A unified image enhancement method is proposed for high-resolution image which based on color constancy and histogram equalization using edge region. To speed up the method, smaller image is used when parameters of color constancy and histogram equalization are determined. In the color constancy process, nth-derivative of gaussian is applied to x and y axis separately in order to estimate the color of the illumination rapidly. In the histogram equalization process, the histogram obtained from near-edge region is used for the histogram equalization. In the experiments, high-resolution images taken by digital camcorder are used for verifying the performance of the proposed method.

  • Land-use changes have made considerable impacts on humans and nature such as biodiversity and ecosystem services. It is recognized as important elements for land use planning and regional natural resources conservation to identify the major causes of land use changes and to predict a process of changes and effects. This study, by using a spatially explicit Dyna-CLUE model, analyzed correlations between driving factors, quantified location characteristics of different land use types using logistic regression analysis and examined future land use changes and its effects in Yangpyeong and Yeoju region. We expected land use changes based on the three scenarios with different future land demands and simulated future changes for spatial variations of land use for the 20 years. The outcomes shows that larger change was found in agricultural areas than forest areas, based on the change in built-up areas. The changes in forest areas, which were mainly occurred in edge area, were expected to affect a large impact on its ecotone. It was found to be the importance of the management of forest edge and the necessity of the environmentally sound and sustainable development in order to conserve natural resources of the region.

  • In this study, the effect of relative position of the blade for the fixed vane has been investigated on blade surface heat transfer. The experiments were conducted in a low speed stationary annular cascade, and heat transfer of blade was examined for six positions within a pitch. Turbine test section has one stage composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length of the tested blade is 150 mm and the mean tip clearance of the blade having flat tip is about $2.5\%$ of the blade chord. For the detailed mass transfer measurements on the blade surfaces, a naphthalene sublimation technique was used. The inlet flow Reynolds number is fixed to $1.5{\times}10^5$. Complex heat transfer characteristics are observed on the blade surface due to various flow characteristics, such as separation bubble, relaminarization, transition to turbulence and leakage vortices. The distributions of velocity and turbulence intensity change significantly with the relative position due to the blockage effect of the blade. This causes the variation of heat transfer patterns on the blade surface. The results show that the flow near the leading edge get highly disturbed and deflected toward the either side of the blade when the blade leading edge is positioned close to the trailing edge of the vane. Therefore, separation bubble disappears on the pressure side and overall heat transfer on the relaminarization region is increased. But, due to reduced tip gap flow at the upstream region, the effect of leakage flow on the upstream region of the blade surface is weakened. Thus, the heat transfer characteristics significantly change with the blade positions.

  • For the first time, two-dimensional temporal behavior of the edge localized mode (ELM) filament is measured in the edge tokamak plasma with a multi-channel electrical probe array (MCEP). MCEP, which has 16 floating probes (4 × 4), is mounted at the far scrape-off layer (SOL) region in the KSTAR. An electron temperature and an ion flux are measured by sideband method (SBM), which can achieve two-dimensional measurements with high time resolution. Furthermore, temporal evolutions of the electron temperature and the ion flux are obtained during the ELM occurrence. In the H-mode period, short spikes from ELM bursts are observed in measured plasma parameters, and the trend is similar to that of typical Hα signal. Interestingly, when blob-like ELM filaments crash the probe, the heat flux is significantly higher in a local region of the probe array. The results show that our probe array using the SBM can measure the ELM behavior and the plasma parameters without the effect of the stray current caused by the huge device. This study can provide valuable data needed to understand the interaction between the SOL plasma and the plasma facing components (PFCs).

  • In the upcoming era of transportation, a groundbreaking technology, known as vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, is poised to redefine our driving experience and revolutionize traffic management. Real-time and secure communication plays a pivotal role in V2X networks, with the decision-making process being a key factor in establishing communication and determining malicious nodes. The proposed framework utilizes a directed acyclic graph (DAG) to facilitate real-time processing and expedite decision-making. This innovative approach ensures seamless connectivity among vehicles, the surrounding infrastructure, and various entities. To enhance communication efficiency, the entire roadside unit (RSU) region can be subdivided into various sub-regions, allowing RSUs to monitor and govern each sub-region. This strategic approach significantly reduces transaction approval time, thereby improving real-time communication. The framework incorporates a consensus mechanism to ensure robust security, even in the presence of malicious nodes. Recognizing the dynamic nature of V2X networks, the addition and removal of nodes are aligned. Communication latency is minimized through the deployment of computational resources near the data source and leveraging edge computing. This feature provides invaluable recommendations during critical situations that demand swift decision-making. The proposed architecture is further validated using the "veins" simulation tool. Simulation results demonstrate a remarkable success rate exceeding 95%, coupled with a significantly reduced consensus time compared to prevailing methodologies. This comprehensive approach not only addresses the evolving requirements of secure V2X communication but also substantiates practical success through simulation, laying the foundation for a transformative era in transportation.
