  • In this paper, we study the structure of neural network for predicting defect size of steam generator tube. After extracting the features from the eddy current testing (ECT) signals, multi-layer neural networks are used to predict the defect size. In order to maximize the prediction performance for the defect size, we should carefully choose the structure of neural networks, especially the number of neurons in the hidden layer. In this paper, it is shown that, for the prediction of defect size, the number of neurons in the hidden layer can be efficiently determined by using cross-validation.

  • A defect could be generated in bolts for a use of oil filters for the manufacturing process and then may affect to the safety and quality in bolts. Also, fine defects may be imbedded in oil filter system. So it is very important that such defects be investigated and screened during the multiple manufacturing processes. Therefore, in order effectively to evaluate the fine defects, the FEM simulations were performed to make characterization in the crack detection of the bolts and the parameters such as number of turns of the coil, the coil size, applied frequency were calculated based on the simulation results. Simulations were carried out for the defect signal of eddy current probe. Exciter and receiver were utilized. In this paper, the FEM simulations were performed in both bobbin-type and pancake-type probe, both probes were optimized under Eddy current FEM simulations and the results of calculation were discussed.

  • Post-tensioning (PT) tendons are commonly used for the assembly of modularized concrete members, and tension is applied to the tendons during construction to facilitate the integrated behavior of the members. However, the tension in a PT tendon decreases over time due to steel corrosion and concrete creep, and consequently, the stress on the anchor head that secures the PT tendon also diminishes. This study proposes an automatic detection system to identify tension reduction in a PT tendon using pulsed-eddy-current (PEC) measurement. An eddy-current sensor is installed on the surface of the steel anchor head. The sensor creates a pulsed excitation to the driving coil and measures the resulting PEC response using the pick-up coil. The basic premise is that the tension reduction of a PT tendon results in stress reduction on the anchor head surface and a change in the PEC intensity measured by the pick-up coil. Thus, PEC measurement is used to detect the reduction of the anchor head stress and consequently the reduction of the PT tendon force below a certain threshold value. The advantages of the proposed PEC-based tension-reduction-detection (PTRD) system are (1) a low-cost (< $ 30), low-power (< 2 Watts) sensor, (2) a short inspection time (< 10 seconds), (3) high reliability and (4) the potential for embedded sensing. A 3.3 m long full-scale monostrand PT tendon was used to evaluate the performance of the proposed PTRD system. The PT tendon was tensioned to 180 kN using a custom universal tensile machine, and the tension was decreased to 0 kN at 20 kN intervals. At each tension, the PEC responses were measured, and tension reduction was successfully detected.

  • In this paper, we study the prediction of depth and width of a defect in steam generator tube in nuclear power plant using neural network. To this end, we first generate eddy current testing (ECT) signals for 4 defect patterns of SG tube: I-In type, I-Out type, V-In type, and V-Out type. In particular, we generate 400 ECT signals for various widths and depths for each defect type by the numerical analysis program based on finite element modeling. From those generated ECT signals, we extract new feature vectors for the prediction of defect size, which include the angle between the two points where the maximum impedance and half the maximum impedance are achieved. Using the extracted feature vector, multi-layer perceptron with one hidden layer is used to predict the size of defects. Through the computer simulation study, it is shown that the proposed method achieves decent prediction performance in terms of maximum error and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE).

  • The eddy current testing performance directly affects the results of a steam generator tube integrity assessment because the integrity assessment of defected tubes is conducted based on eddy current testing results. This means that it may not be possible to accurately discriminate between adjacent flaws. This paper presents an investigation on the resolution of rotating pancake coils with multiple cracks and the effects on the structural integrity assessment of steam generator tubes.

  • The typical methods used for inspecting ferromagnetic pipes include the ultrasonic testing (UT) contact method and the following non-contact methods: magnetic flux leakage (MFL), electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMAT), and remote field eddy current testing (RFECT). Among these methods, the RFECT method has the advantage of being able to establish a system smaller than the diameter of a pipe. However, the method has several disadvantages as well, including different sensitivities and difficult-to-repair coil sensors which comprise its array system. Therefore, a giant magneto-resistance (GMR) sensor was applied to address these issues. The GMR sensor is small, easy to replace, and has uniform sensitivity. In this experiment, the GMR sensor was used to measure remote field and defect signal characteristics (in the axial and radial directions) in a ferromagnetic pipe. These characteristics were measured in an effort to investigate standard defects at changing depths within a pipe. The results show that the experiment successfully demonstrated the applicability of the GMR sensor to RFECT signal detection in ferromagnetic pipe.

  • In eddy current testing(ECT), differential probes have been frequently used since they .an reduce the number of parameters that influence ECT signals. However, differential signal is actually the difference of the two coils' impedance so that signal prediction and interpretation are not easy, On the other hand, absolute coil signal is rather straightforward to predict and analyze. Therefore, combined use of the two types of signals would increase the test reliability. In this paper, absolute coil signals from Inconel plate and tubes are predicted by the finite element analysis and efforts of lift-off, fill-factor, conductivity, operating frequency, test specimen thickness, inner diameter defects, and outer diameter defects are investigated. As a result, various impedance plane diagrams are drawn and analyzed. Significant practical knowldege about absolute signals is accumulated and similar characteristics of the two types of signal could be understood. Finally, slope angle versus defect depth calibration corves are prepared for three different frequencies.

  • Periodical thermal shock can introduce defects in thermal barrier coating made by layers of CoNiCrAlY bond coating(BC) and $ZrO_2-8wt%Y_2O_3$ ceramic top coating(TC) on Inconel-738 substrate using plasma spraying. Thermal shock test is performed by severe condition that is to heat until $1000^{\circ}C$ and cool until $20^{\circ}C$. As the number of cycle is increased, the fatigue by thermal shock is also increased. After test, the micro-structures and mechanical characteristics of thermal barrier coating were investigated by SEM, XRD. The TGO layer of $Al_2O_3$ is formed between BC and TC by periodical thermal shock test, and its change in thickness is inspected by eddy current test(ECT). By ECT test, it is shown that TGO and micro-crack can be detected and it is possible to predict the life of thermal barrier coating.
