We have been measuring $CH_4$ flux in a rice paddy in Gimje using the eddy covariance method since July 2011. In order to measure the fast fluctuations of $CH_4$ concentration, an innovative LI-7700 open-path laser spectrometer is used. This high-precision, low power, light weight, low maintenance sensor enables us to operate it on a continuous and long-term basis. One particular feature, among other things, is the self-cleaning lower mirror which decreases maintenance requirements while ensuring more robust, continuous, high-quality dataset. Its cleaning is initiated at user-specified time intervals or a signal strength threshold, and its status is recorded as a diagnostic index. We have noticed that the operation of LI-7700 at Gimje site is quite challenging particularly due to its frequent mirror cleaning requirement and the associated sensitivity of the instrument. In this presentation, we present some field observation data regarding the mirror cleaning and their analysis, thereby suggesting the pertinent operation options for high-quality, maximum data retrieval in the field.
The closed chamber method, which is one of the most commonly used method for measuring greenhouse gases produced in rice paddy fields, has limitations in measuring dynamic $CH_4$ flux with spatio-temporal constrains. In order to deal with the limitation of the closed chamber method, some studies based on open-path of eddy covariance method have been actively conducted recently. The aim of this study was to compare the $CH_4$ fluxes measured by open-path and closed chamber method in the paddy rice fields. The open-path, one of the gas ($CO_2$, $CH_4$ etc.) analysis methods, is technology where a laser beam is emitted from the source passes through the open cell, reflecting multiple times from the two mirrors, and then detecting. The $CH_4$ emission patterns by these two methods during rice cultivation season were similar, but the total $CH_4$ emission measured by open-path method were 31% less than of the amount measured by closed chamber. The reason for the difference in $CH_4$ emission was due to overestimation by closed chamber and underestimation by open-path. The closed chamber method can overestimate $CH_4$ emissions due to environmental changes caused by high temperature and light interruption by acrylic partition in chamber. On the other hand, the open-path method for eddy covariance can underestimate its emission because it assumes density fluctuations and horizontal homogeneous terrain negligible However, comparing $CH_4$ fluxes at the same sampling time (AM 10:30-11:00, 30-min fluxes) showed good agreements ($r^2=0.9064$). The open-path measurement technique is expected to be a good way to compensate for the disadvantage of the closed chamber method because it can monitor dynamic $CH_4$ fluctuation even if data loss is taken into account.

BACKGROUND: To quantify carbon exchange at agricultural ecosystems in South Korea, net ecosystem exchange (NEE) at three croplands including a rice paddy, a bean field and an apple orchard was measured on the basis of the eddy covariance technique. METHODS AND RESULTS: NEE of CO2 during the growing season (June to September) averaged over the recent two years (2018-2019) was the highest at rice (-4.49 g C m-2 day-1), followed by the bean (-3.12 g C m-2 day-1) and apple (-0.93 g C m-2 day-1). The diurnal variation of NEE was the highest at the rice, while the seasonal variation of it was the highest at the bean than others. In terms of yearly variation, the rice paddy and the bean field absorbed more CO2 in 2019 compared to 2018, while the apple orchard absorbed less. CONCLUSION: Our results confirmed that these croplands consistently acted as net sinks for CO2 during the growing season because an amount of CO2 uptake from photosynthesis was larger than one of its emissions from respiration. The quantification of net CO2 exchange at agricultural ecosystems may help to better understand the local carbon cycle over various time scales.

In this study, using flux data measured in Deokgokje reservoir watershed near Deokyu mountain in May, June, and July 2011, statistical analysis was conducted for outlier detection and replacement for vertical wind speed in the measurement of evapotranspiration based on eddy covariance method. To statistically analyze the outliers of vertical wind speed, the outlier detection method based on interquartile range (IQR) in boxplot was employed and the detected outliers were deleted or replaced with mean. The comparison was conducted for the measured evapotranspiration before and after the outlier replacement. The study results showed that there is a difference between evapotranspiration before outlier replacement and evapotranspiration after outlier replacement, especially during the rainy day. Therefore, based on the study results, the outliers should be deleted or replaced in the measurement of evapotranspiration.

In the context of rapid temperature rise in mid-to-high latitude regions, cold region wetlands have become a hotspot for current wetland carbon cycle research due to their high sensitivity to climate change. Strengthening the monitoring of CO2 fluxes in wetland ecosystems is of great practical significance for clarifying the carbon balance of wetlands and maintaining the ecological balance of wetland ecosystems in China's high latitude regions. In this study, the carbon flux (NEE, Net ecosystem exchange; GPP, Gross Primary Production; RECO, Ecosystem response) of Jingxin Wetland was monitored by eddy correlation method from August 2021 to March 2024.2022-2023 shows CO2 sinks, absorbing 349.4 g C·m-2·yr-1 annually. The correlation analysis showed that Ta, VPD and PPFD were the main environmental factors affecting CO2 flux in Jingxin wetland.

The standardized eddy covariance flux data processing in KoFlux has been updated, and its database has been amended accordingly. KoFlux data users have not been informed properly regarding these changes and the likely impacts on their analyses. In this paper, we have documented how the current structure of data processing in KoFlux has been established through the changes and improvements to ensure transparency, reliability and usability of the KoFlux database. Due to increasing diversity and complexity of flux site instrumentation and organization, we have re-implemented the previously ignored or simplified procedures in data processing (e.g., frequency response correction, stationarity test), and added new methods for $CH_4$ flux gap-filling and $CO_2$ flux correction and partitioning. To evaluate the effects of the changes, we processed the data measured at a flat and homogeneous paddy field (i.e., HPK) and a deciduous forest in complex and heterogeneous topography (i.e., GDK), and quantified the differences. Based on the results from our overall assessment, it is confirmed that (1) the frequency response correction (HPK: 11~18% of biases for annually integrated values, GDK: 6~10%) and the stationarity test (HPK: 4~19% of biases for annually integrated values, GDK: 9~23%) are important for quality control and (2) the minimization of the missing data and the choice of the appropriate driver (rather than the choice of the gap-filling method) are important to reduce the uncertainty in gap-filled fluxes. These results suggest the future directions for the data processing technology development to ensure the continuity of the long-term KoFlux database.
This study was performed in Seolmacheon basin to evaluate the adequacy of GLDAS (Global Land Data Assimilation System) and GLEAM (Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model) evapotranspiration data. The verification data necessary for the evaluation of adequacy were calculated after processing the latent heat flux data produced in the Seolmacheon basin with the Koflux program. In order to gap-fill the empty period, alternative evapotranspiration was calculated in three ways: FAO-PM (Food and Agriculture Organization-Penman Monteith), MDV (Mean Diurnal Variation) and Kalman Filter. This study selected Kalman Filter method as the data gap-filling method because it showed the best Bias and RMSE among the three methods. The amount of GLDAS spatial evapotranspiration was calculated as Noah (version 2.1) with a time interval of 3 hours and a spatial resolution of 0.25°. The amount of GLEAM spatial evapotranspiration was calculated using GLEAM (version 3.1a). This study evaluated the spatial evapotranspiration of GLDAS and GLEAM as the evapotranspiration based on eddy covariance. As a result of evaluation, GLDAS spatial evapotranspiration showed better results than GLEAM. Accordingly, in this study, the GLDAS method was proposed as a method for calculating the amount of spatial evapotranspiration in the Seolmacheon basin.

In hydrological surveys, observation through representative location is essential due to temporal and spatial limitations and constraints. Regarding the use of hydrological data and the accuracy of the data, there are still insufficient observatories to be used in a specific watershed. In addition, since there is virtually no standard for the location of the current evapotranspiration, this study proposes a method for determining the location of the evapotranspiration. To determining the location of evapotranspiration, a grid is selected in consideration of the operating range of the Flux Tower using the eddy covariance measurement method, which is mainly used to measure evapotranspiration. The grid of representative location was calculated using the factors affecting evapotranspiration and satellite data of evapotranspiration. The grid of representative location was classified as good, fair, and poor. As a result, the number of good grids calculated was 54. It is judged that the classification of the grid has been achieved regarding topography and land use as a characteristic that appeared in the classification of the grid. In particular, in the case of elevation or city area, there was a large deviation, and the calculated good grid was judged to be a group between the two distributions.

Nighttime correction of $CO_2$ flux is one of the most important and challenging tasks in eddy covariance measurements over a complex mountainous terrain. In this study, we have scrutinized the quality and the credibility of the $CO_2$ flux datasets which were produced by employing three different methods of nighttime correction, i.e., (1) friction velocity ($u^*$) correction, (2) light response curve (LRC) correction, and (3) advection-based van Gorsel (VG) correction. The whole year datasets used in our analysis were collected at the two KoFlux tower sites (i.e., GDK deciduous forest site at the upper hill and GCK coniferous forest site at the lower hill) located in the valley of Gwangneung National Arboretum in central Korea. The resultant magnitudes and patterns of ecosystem respiration ($R_E$), gross primary productivity (GPP), and net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of $CO_2$ showed marked differences among the datasets produced with three different correction methods, which were also site-specific. The examination from micrometeorological and ecological perspectives suggests that the major cause of some inconsistency seems to be associated with the advection of $CO_2$ along the sloping terrain and the inappropriate selection of the correction data that might have been already affected by advective flows. The comparison with the results from other studies indicated that the overall characteristics of the corrected $CO_2$ fluxes at GDK and GCK (except those with LRC correction) were well within the ranges reported in the literature for various ecosystems in East Asia in similar latitudes. However, our study also implies that there will be always a room for further improvement in the present datasets. Therefore, caution must be exercised for the data users in order to properly use the updated version of datasets through transparent, open and participatory communication with data producers.
This study presents a performance evaluation of four different land surface models (LSM) available in Weather Forecast Research (WRF). The research site was located in Haean Basin in South Korea. The basin is very unique by its geomorphology and topography. For a better representation of the complex terrain in the mesoscale model were used a high resolution topography data with a spatial resolution of 30 meters. Additionally, land-use layer was corrected by ground mapping data-sets. The observation equipments used in the study were an ultrasonic anemometer with a gas analyzer, an automatic weather station and a tethered balloon sonde. The model simulation covers a four-day period during autumn. The result shows significant impact of LSM on meteorological simulation. The best agreement between observation and simulation was found in the case of WRF with Noah LSM (WRF-Noah). The WRF with Rapid Update Cycle LSM (WRF-RUC) has a very good agreement with temperature profiles due to successfully predicted fog which appeared during measurements and affected the radiation budget at the basin floor. The WRF with Pleim and Xiu LSM (WRF-PX) and WRF with Thermal Diffusion LSM (WRF-TD) performed insufficiently for simulation of heat fluxes. Both overestimated the sensible and underestimated the latent heat fluxes during the daytime.
