  • Switching regression models are commonly used for the statistical analysis of the disequilibrium models. In this paper wer show how switching regression models can be classified by the sample separation criterion and how they are related to the disequilibrium models. The problems in the estimation of the disequilibrium models ar discussed for the ones with both known sample separation and unknown sample separation.

  • The relatively rapid rising trend of crime rates in marine situations leads to social concerns in Korea. This study reviews some theoretical backgrounds of the economics of crime and applies econometric models to Korean marine crimes. This research finds that there is a negative relationship between marine crime rates and unemployment rates and a positive relationship between the price level and marine crimes in Korea. The other finding results are that unemployment elasticities are higher in the 1980s and price elasticities are higher in th 1990s in comparison with the results of the other periods. This findings are incompatible with the previous theoretical researches in advanced countries. These findings show that In rapidly growing economy, marine crime occurrence is proportional to marine economic activity frequency. This result may reflect that marine crimes are different from land crimes.

  • This research aims to analyze the determinants of apartment rents in the Seoul Metropolitan area using spatial econometrics approaches. Since spatial econometrics approaches have advantages to solve limitations of ordinary multiple regression such as spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity. This research includes structural variables such as number of rooms and baths, neighborhood variables such as number of housing units in the apartment complex, and location variables including distances to subway stations, to traditional markets, to educational institutes, and to urban services such as parks, etc. The result shows that the accessibilities to the CBD, to subcenters, to subway station, to school, and to parks contribute to apartment rent uplift and also shows different spatial variations in rent premiums by accessibility variables. In particular, apartments located south of Han river along the Lines 2, 3, 7 and 9 have the highest rent premiums due to the accessibility to the subway.

  • Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the potential asymmetry in price competition between the geographically defined submarkets of the lodging industry, namely the traditional and alternative accommodation facilities. Design/methodology/approach The study utilizes a spatial econometric model to empirically test for the hypothesized asymmetry in price competition. Property-level panel data on hotels and alternative accommodation facilities collected from a major online travel agency (OTA: Agoda.com) was used for this purpose. Findings Result of the analysis shows significant intra-segment spatial price competition among the properties, that is, within hotels and within alternative accommodation submarkets, respectively. However, the inter-segment competition was found to be asymmetric as hypothesized. Room rates of hotels are influenced by prices of geographically close alternative accommodations, but the reverse does not hold. Implications for practitioners and suggestions for future research are discussed along with the findings of the study.

  • In this paper, a system dynamics model for explaining the application, grant and maintenance of patents is provided. Existing literatures regarding the patent application system are mostly econometric approaches that consider only economic variables such as GDP and R&D. The model in this paper includes patent variables such as disputes as well as economic variables. Moreover, we show that the model can be used in not only a quantitative prediction but also policy experiment. The results of the policy experiment shows that strengthening protection of patents tend to increase the propensity to patent more than R&D investment.

  • This paper presents an econometric model for measuring basic research capacity index(BRCI) of each OECD countries and analyses the gap in terms of time lag measured and forecasted in connection with factor analysis and BRCI progress function. Based on the analysis, gross domestic expenditure on R&D(GERD), total R&D personnel, higher education expenditure on R&D(HERD) and number of science and technical papers based on SCI are more effective than other factors to BRCI. Also, BRCI progress function shows that 29 years is needed for Korea to catch up the level of German's BRCI of year 1998. But, it's impossible for Korea to catch up US and Japan. Therefore, with restricted scientific resources, Korea's own strategy for strengthening basic research capacity is going to be more important in 21st century.

  • This study is conducted to apply the insight of Johnson and Libecap(1982) to Korea's coastal vessel fishing. According to Johnson and Libecap(1982) the differences in fishing ability are largely attributed to acquired knowledge and innate skills. Since those skills are unlikely to be readily transferable assets, economic rents exist in the fishery, even under open access conditions. Therefore the paper tries to examine whether the acquired information from fishing experience and innate skill could also have an effect on catch variation of coastal vessel fishing in Kyung-Nam province. To do so, the paper is performing the analysis by establishing econometric model. Results show us that the acquired information from fishing experience have a significant effect on catch variation, but the innate skill does not.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze theoretically and empirically spillover effects of fishery quota on related markets through their demand curves. Theoretically, the spillover effects of a change in quota can be captured through the directly distorted market alone by computing surpluses associated with the new and old equilibrium. This study estimates empirically demand functions in the context of both the partial equilibrium and general equilibrium. The spillover effect can be computed from the difference between these two estimates. The econometric methodology to estimate the demand curves in the context of general equilibrium is presented and illustrated. The empirical result of fishery markets shows that spillover effects transmitted across other markets are not small and approximately account for 43.3% of the partial equilibrium welfare effects.

  • Investigations were made on the status of women groups on processing activities of agricultural products for the Hyogo prefecture in Japan. The data were analyzed with the Hideyosi for Windows(Version 1.19) and the Econometric View for Quantative Micro Softwere(Version 2.0). The results indicats that many rural women groups have their own experience on the activities of processing agricultural products and many other women groups have gained such experience from the management and establishment of the restaurants and direct sales stores. This kind of systems has influenced the activation of each rural district. Further development of the processing of agricultural products by rural women groups in the future demands better cooperation among diverse groups involved in these establishment centers and consumers. In addition, it is necessary to attract young people and train and upgrade them for successive consumers. (Korean J of Human Ecology 2(1) : 68∼79, 1999)
