To improve the growth inhibitory activity against the shoot and root of rice plant (Oryza sativa L) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli), a series of N-substituted phenyl-3,4-dimethylmaleimdes derivatives as substrates were synthesized and then their the inhibitory activities of protoporphyrinogen oxidase (1.3.3.4), protox were measured. The quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) between structures and the inhibitory activities were studied quantitatively using the 2D-QSAR method. And also, molecular sharp similarity between the substrate derivatives and protogen, substrare of protox enzyme were studied. The activities of the two plants indicated that barnyard grass had a higher activity than the rice plant and their correlation relationships have shown in proportion for each. Accordingly, the results of SARs suggest that the electron donating groups as $R_2=Sub.X$ group will bind to phenyl ring because the bigger surface area of negative charged atoms in the substrate molecule derivatives may increase to the higher the activity against barnyard grass. Based on the molecular shape similarity, when the derivatives and protogen, subsbrate of protox enzyme were superimposed by atom fitting, the similarity indices (S) were above 0.8 level but the correlation coefficients (r) between S values and the activities showed not good.

This study was conducted to investigate the ability for weed control of the shoot extract of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) and developing a sustainable weed management in organic farming. When the dried shoot powder was mixed with soil and treated with 2 cm above the soil surface, the germination for Echinochloa crus-galli, Digitaria cilialis, Abutilon theophrasti and Amaranthus retroflexus was inhibited maxium 40%. The growth inhibition of germinated seedlings in the A. theophrasti and A. retroflexus was maxium 30% while it was less than 30% in the E. crus-galli and D. cilialis. Shoot extracts at rates above $25mg\;ml^{-1}$ was effective to inhibit germination of D. cilialis, A. theophrasti and A. retroflexus. The shoot extract concentration required for 50% of germination inhibition was $60mg\;ml^{-1}$ in the E. crus-galli, while it was less than $10mg\;ml^{-1}$ in the D. cilialis, A. theophrasti and A. retroflexus. For the foliar application, 11 adjuvants were tested at 0.5% and DOS70, TM15 and TDE7 were most effective adjuvants for the shoot extracts. DOS70 was most effective and provided up to 60% of weed control efficacy for the tested four weed species. Though herbicidal efficacy of sorghum shoot was not enough to give a proper weed control, it can be expected that long term use of sorghum shoots can provide gradual decrease in weed seeds and weed density.
This study was conducted to develop a foliar applied herbicide mixture covering wide spectrum weeds in dry direct seeded rice. Uniform precision central composite design(UPCCD) was employed to evaluate the effect of herbicide mixture among cyhalofop-butyl(cyhalofop), bispyribenzoxim and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl(pyrazosulfuron) having different weed control spectrum and to determine the best application rates of the three herbicide mixtures. The partial additive effect was observed in the mixture of cyhalofop and bispyribenzoxim with pyrazosulfron against Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv var crus-galli L., attributed to the negative interaction between cyhalofop and bispyribenzoxim system. Additive effect was observed in the mixture of bispyribenzoxim and pyrazosulfuron against Cyperus serotinus R. and Aneilema keisak H. but cyhalofop had no effect on these weeds. The most appropriate rate of the mixture of cyhalofop with bispyribenzoxim and pyrazosulfuron was 100 : 12 : 10g ai/ha exhibiting $ED_{90}$ against three weeds such as E. crus-galli, C. serotinus and A. keisak.
Common thistle contains water-soluble substances that are phytotoxic to neighboring plant species. A series of aqueous extracts from leaves, stems, roots and flowers of common thistle (Cirsium pendulum Fisch.) were assayed against alfalfa (Medicago sativa) seedlings to determine their allelopathy, and the results showed highest inhibition in the extracts from flowers and leaves, and followed by stems, and roots. The extracts at 40 g dry tissue $L^{-1}(g\;L^{-1})$ applied on filter paper in a Petri-dish significantly inhibited root growth of test plant by 87%. Methanol extracts at 100 g $L^{-1}$ from leaves inhibited root growth of alfalfa and barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) by 89 and 98%, respectively. Hexane and ethylacetate fractions of common thistle reduced alfalfa root growth more than did butanol and water fractions. Incorporation into soil with the leaf residues at $100g\;kg^{-1}$ inhibited shoot fresh weights of barnyardgrass and eclipta (Eclipta prostrate) by 88 and 58%, respectively, showing higher sensitivity in grass species. These results suggest that common thistle plants had allelopathic potential for eco-friendly vegetation management, and that especially their activities were differently exhibited depending on plant part.
Compositae plants are known to contain biologically active substances that are allelopathic to agricultural crops as well as weed species. Aqueous extracts from leaves of Xanthium occidentale were assayed against alfalfa (Medicago sativa) to determine their allelopathic effects, and the result showed that the extracts applied onto filter paper significantly inhibited seed germination as well as root growth of alfalfa. Untreated seeds germinated in 60h, but extract concentrations greater than 30g $\textrm{L}^{-1}$ delayed seed germination. The extracts significantly inhibited seed germination of alfalfa, and $\beta$-amylase activity of alfalfa and barley seeds during 24-36 hours after treatment. Aqueous extracts of 40 g $\textrm{L}^{-1}$ from X. occidentale were completely inhibited the hypocotyl and root growth of alfalfa. Aqueous leaf extracts showed the highest inhibitory effect and followed by root and stem extracts. Early seedling growth of both alfalfa and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) was significantly reduced by methanol extracts. By means of high-performance liquid chromatography, chlorogenic acid and trans-cinnamic acid were quantified as the highest amounts from water and EtOAc fractions, respectively. BuOH and EtOAc fractions of X. occidentale reduced alfalfa root growth more than did hexane and water fractions. The findings of the bioassays for aqueous or methanol extracts reflected that the inhibitory effect of extract was closely related to the level of responsible allelochemicals found in plant extracts.
This study was conducted to determine the herbicidal activity of allelochemicals and identify herbicidal compounds in bulbs of Lycoris chinensis var. sinuolata. Methanol extract was purified by a series of silica gel flash column chromatography and HPLC. The final HPLC gave two active fractions and an herbicidal compound was obtained. By GC/MS analysis, the herbicidal compound was identified as montanine ($O^2$-methyl pancracine), an isoquinoline alkaloid. Montanine showed 100% of growth inhibition on the shoot and root of barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) seedlings at $50\;{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ as compared with the control.
The role of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in the phytoremediation of heavy-metal-contaminated soils is important in overcoming its limitations for field application. A plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium, Serratia sp. SY5, was isolated from the rhizoplane of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) grown in petroleum and heavy-metal-contaminated soil. This isolate has shown capacities for indole acetic acid production and siderophores synthesis. Compared with a non-inoculated control, the radicular root growth of Zea mays seedlings inoculated with SY5 can be increased by 27- or 15.4-fold in the presence of 15 mg-Cd/l or 15 mg-Cu/l, respectively. The results from hydroponic cultures showed that inoculation of Serratia sp. SY5 had a favorable influence on the initial shoot growth and biomass of Zea mays under noncontaminated conditions. However, under Cd-contaminated conditions, the inoculation of SY5 significantly increased the root biomass of Zea mays. These results indicate that Serratia sp. SY5 can serve as a promising microbial inoculant for increased plant growth in heavy-metal-contaminated soils to improve the phytoremediation efficiency.
This study was conducted to investigate the absorption and translocation of pretilachlor [2-chloro-2, 6-diethyl-N-(n-propoxyethyl)-acetanilide] in plants and to evaluate the mobility in soil using the $^{14}C-or$ non-labelled compound in laboratory. Rice plant(Oryza sativa L.) was very tolerant to pretilachlor. Echinochloa crus-galli P. Beauv. was completely controlled by pretilachlor at 60g a.i./10a. At the 120g a.i./l0a, growth of Cyperus serotinus Rottb. and Sagittaria pygmaea Miq. was inhibited by 75% and 25%, respectively. The growth inhibition depended on absorbed amount of $^{14}C-pretilachlor$. The greatest concentration of $^{14}C$ was found in E. crus-galli, whereas the lowest was determined in rice plant. The rate of absorption and translocation in E. curs-galli was faster than in rice plan. Pretilachlor moved to 6cm deep in sandy clay loam, clay loam and loam soils, but to 10cm in sandy loam soil. In the soils herbicide-treated layer was found 0 to 2cm profile.
A series of synthesized N-(2-fluoro-4-chloro-5-alkyloxyphenyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2-arylthio-5-oxo-2,5-dihydropyrrole derivatives as substrates were found to selectivity significantly with both rice plant (Oryza sativa L.) and weeds, barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) and bulrush (Scriptus juncoides) for those herbicidal activities at a rate of 0.1 kg/ha with post emergence under submerged conditions. The structure activity relationships (SARs) on herbicidal activity of $SR_{2}$=2-arylthio substituents on the pyrrole ring were analysized. From the results, the relative contribute orders of the $SR_{2}$ with phenyl group on the activity are meta > para > ortho-substituents. Among these compounds, the $R_{1}=propargyl$ (IA) subsrituents, $1{\sim}12$ showed higher activity than the $R_{1}$=2-chloro-2-propenyl (IB) substituents, $13{\sim}16$. The $SR_{2}$ groups of IA substituents shown that the optimal steric constant, $(Es)_{opt.}=3.25$ and m-phenylthio substituents were found to be -contribute the activity against barnyard grass. But the herbicidal activity of IB substituents against bulrush would depend upon the molar refractivity, $M_{R}$ constant of $SR_{2}$ group.
To select indicator insects, the abundance of which is one of the major criteria for the evaluation of agricultural environment, was designated and monitored in the three sites (Hongcheon A, B, and Yangpyeong) from 2001 to 2003. Characteristics of rice cultivation are usual cultivation with 2 or 3 times sprayed chemical agents per year in Hongcheon A site, duck cultivation with non-sprayed chemical agent, green manure and mowing in Hongcheon B site, and pond snail with non-sprayed chemical agent, green manure and mowing in Yangpyeong site. Dominant floral species are Digitaria ciliaris (Retz.) Koel., Persicaria thunbergii (Siebold & Zuccarini) H. Gross, Echinochioa crus-galli (L.) Beauvois, and Humulus scandens (Lour.) Merr. in Hongcheon A site, Digitaria ciliaris (Retz.) Koel., Persicaria thunbergii (Siebold & Zuccarini) H. Gross, and Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauvois in Hongcheon B site, and Digitaria ciliaris (Retz.) Koel., Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv., and Persicaria langiseta (De Btuyn) Kitagawa in Yangpyeong site. Degree of green naturality (DGN) was higher in Hongcheon B site (2.0) and Yangpyeong site (3.6) than in Hongcheon A site (1.6). Number of species and individual of insects collected in the three sites were abundant on August and September. The species diversity was higher in Hongcheon B and Yangpyeong than in Hongcheon A. And Coleoptera was dominant in the all sites. The dominance index (DI) was the lowest, but diversify index (H'), evenness index (E) and richness index (RI) were the highest in Hongcheon B site. Based on three results, indicator insects for the evaluation of agricultural environment were selected as Dolichus halensis in Hongeheon A site, as Pheropsophus. javanus and Polionemobius mikado in Hongcheon B and Yangpyeong sites.
