  • Whole flow fields of a room air conditioner (RAC) have been visualized by a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique to analyze the flow structure by various inlet and outlet angles, and to control an eccentric vortex which affects an efficiency and noise of the RAC. A test model with 5 stages of a cross flow fan has been manufactured and a transparent acryl has been installed at the side of the test model for the PIV experiment. The inlet and outlet flows and the flow inside the cross flow fan have been analyzed by varying the inlet grill angles and outlet blade angles. The movement of the eccentric vortex has been investigated experimentally by developing the measurement technique for the inner flow field of the cross flow fan, and the relationship between the control of the eccentric vortex and the inlet and outlet angles has been confirmed in this study.

  • The computational flow analysis using LES technique was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics of a RAC chassis consisting of a rear-guider, a stabilizer and a cross-flow fan. The commercial SC/Tetra software was used in this analysis. In view of the results so far achieved, the distribution trends of static pressure and velocity vector of central region except the edges of a CFFan are similar regardless of the number of revolution, and an eccentric vortex exists around the bottom blade of a CFFan. Also, a reverse flow is found in the region between stabilizer and CFFan. Moreover, near the edges of a CFFan, an eccentric vortex is separated to two vortexes. Also these vortexes increase the velocity near a rear-guider, and guide the flow near a rear-guider into stabilizer inlet. Therefore, the reverse flow region is formed in the bottom of a CFFan.

  • The influence of eccentric(=staggeredness) ratio between stationary upstream circular cylinders on heat transfer characteristics of a heated downstream circular cylinder installed in a channel was investigated experimentally. In order to enhance the heat transfer rate of the heated downstream cylinder surface, we have changed the configuration of upstream cylinder. As a result, we were able to obtain local time-averaged convective heat transfer enhancement of the heated cylinder by the relative replacement of upstream cylinder. This is basically attributed to the mean flow structure change, such as flow separation, vortex shedding, and recirculation of the upstream cylinder including the reattachment and new thermal boundary developed at the downstream cylinder which are the results of the increase of the staggeredness ratio.

  • Internal and inlet flows of a cross-flow fan have been visualized using a particle image velocimetry(PIV) to analyze a relationship with a performance of a room air conditioner(RAC). A test model which has a geometric similarity with the real RAC has been manufactured for the experiment and the flow characteristics have been analyzed with various flow rates and inlet grill angles for the cross-flow fan. The experimental results using the PIV technique have been compared with the existing numerical results. Also, a location and movement of an eccentric vortex which can affect the performance and noise of the RAC has been investigated by the PIV with various flow rates and inlet grill angles.

  • One of noticeable features in the cross flow fan is that a working fluid passes through impeller blade twice without distinction between the inlet and exit angles. Also, it does produce higher circumferential velocity than other types of blade at the same flow rate in accordance with the application of the forward curved shape. However, a design theory for the cross-flow fan has not yet been formed owing to an eccentric vortex, which is the remarkable characteristics, occurred in a cross-flow fan. Furthermore, the eccentric vortex, which is difficult to control of the size and position, is the important cause of performance decrease. In this study, experiments are carried out to estimate the similarity of the cross-flow fan with various scales and rotational velocity changes. Pressure coefficients to flow coefficients with various scales of the cross-flow fan are plotted to research the application of the general similarity law of the turbomachinery in the cross-flow fan with Archimedes spital, which is the important factor haying an effect on it.

  • The computational flow analysis using LES technique was introduced to investigate the flow field improvement of an indoor RAC chassis consisting of a rear-guider, a stabilizer and a cross-flow fan. This unsteady three-dimensional numerical analysis was carried out by the commercial SC/Tetra software. The edge blocks were adopted in this study as a tool for the flow field improvement of an indoor RAC. In view of the results so far achieved, the edge blocks cause the center of an eccentric vortex to be stable along all length of a cross-flow fan, and then, the static pressure and the velocity vector show a stable distributions. In consequence, because the edge blocks eliminate a reverse flow near the edges, an exhausting flow becomes to be stable and uniform.

  • In this study, performance, flow characteristics and noise of a cross-flow-fan system, used in indoor unit of the split-type air conditioner, were predicted by computational simulation. Triangular elements were used to mesh the calculation domain and quadrilateral elements were attached to the blade surfaces and walls to enhance the simulation quality. The unsteady incompressible Wavier-Stokes equations were solved using a sliding mesh technique on the interface between rotating fan region and the outside. Two stripes of velocity stream inside the cross-flow-fan were shown - the one was due to the eccentric vortex and the other was due to the normal entrance flow. As the flow rate increased, the center of the eccentric vortex moved toward the inner blade tip and rear-guide, and the exiting flow still had velocity variation along the stabilizer, which can increase the noise level. The acoustic pressure was calculated by using Lowson's equation. From the calculated acoustic pressure, it was found that the trailing edge is a dominant of acoustic generation.

  • The present work has carried out experimental study on a cross-flow fan system with a simplified vortex wall scroll casing. A cross-flow fan test rig was constructed to obtain pressure rise and volume flow rate for various fan operating conditions. The performance estimation is using a wind tunnel with a motor driven damper for flow rate control and flows are quantitatively visualized by light scattering system with a pulsed laser. Min focus on the visualization is finding a eccentric vortex inside a fan which is a major factor reducing fan efficiency. Comprehensive engineering data are prepared for industrial applications and show a good agreement with a prior work by experimental measurements.
