  • We evaluated the usability of two kinds types of recently commercialized e-books through an analysis of their protocols, compared the time required to read an e-book with that for a paper book, and compared text display sizes that were easy to read for aged and young readers, under identical conditions. This showed clear problems with the usability of e-books for aged and young readers. It was found that it took longer for aged readers to read text in an e-book than for young readers, and that the size of text that aged readers found easy to read was different than for young readers.

  • This study investigated global and local characteristics of eye movement while 30 college students read easy and difficult Korean texts. It was found that readers who read the difficult text fixated longer for about 217ms and made shorter saccades of about 3.7 characters while readers who read the easy one fixated for about 190ms and made saccades of about 4.8 characters. Single fixation times and gaze durations in the difficult text were longer than those in the easy one(227ms vs. 195ms; 266ms vs. 210ms). In both easy and difficult texts, the effects of word frequency and eojeol length were found. In addition, the differences in fixation times according to word frequency and length were larger in the difficult text.

  • While studies aimed at detecting and analyzing indels or single nucleotide polymorphisms within human genomic sequences have been actively conducted, studies on detecting long insertions/deletions are not easy to orchestrate. For the last 10 years, the availability of long read data of human genomes from PacBio or Nanopore platforms has increased, which makes it easier to detect long insertions/deletions. However, because long read data have a critical disadvantage due to their relatively high cost, many next generation sequencing data are produced mainly by short read sequencing machines. Here, we constructed programs to detect so-called unmapped regions (UMRs, where no reads are mapped on the reference genome), scanned 40 Korean genomes to select UMR long deletion candidates, and compared the candidates with the long deletion break points within the genomes available from the 1000 Genomes Project (1KGP). An average of about 36,000 UMRs were found in the 40 Korean genomes tested, 284 UMRs were common across the 40 genomes, and a total of 37,943 UMRs were found. Compared with the 74,045 break points provided by the 1KGP, 30,698 UMRs overlapped. As the number of compared samples increased from 1 to 40, the number of UMRs that overlapped with the break points also increased. This eventually reached a peak of 80.9% of the total UMRs found in this study. As the total number of overlapped UMRs could probably grow to encompass 74,045 break points with the inclusion of more Korean genomes, this approach could be practically useful for studies on long deletions utilizing short read data.

  • This study presents a novel DNA part characterization technique that increases throughput by combinatorial DNA part assembly, solid plate-based quantitative fluorescence assay for phenotyping, and barcode tagging-based long-read sequencing for genotyping. We confirmed that the fluorescence intensities of colonies on plates were comparable to fluorescence at the single-cell level from a high-end, flow-cytometry device and developed a high-throughput image analysis pipeline. The barcode tagging-based long-read sequencing technique enabled rapid identification of all DNA parts and their combinations with a single sequencing experiment. Using our techniques, forty-four DNA parts (21 promoters and 23 RBSs) were successfully characterized in 72 h without any automated equipment. We anticipate that this high-throughput and easy-to-use part characterization technique will contribute to increasing part diversity and be useful for building genetic circuits and metabolic pathways in synthetic biology.

  • We developed a two-dimensional numerical simulator which can analyze the electrical as well as optical characteristics and evaluate the detection performances of self-signal processing infrared detectors. It solves the poisson equation and the electron, hole current continuity equations including the optical generation and recombination models. To speed up convergency rate. the Newton algorithm is used. Automatic triangular grid generator make it easy to simulate the devices with the various read-out geometries. This simulator can show the variation of spatial resolution which is caused by the transit velocity and transit time dispersion in bifurcate and horn geometries respectively. Also, we calculated the responsivity, noise, and detectivity in respect of the applied electric field and background field-of-view. The results obtained from simulation correspond to those of experiments, and it is verified that horn read-out geometry has the superior spatial resolution and detection performance to bifurcate geometry.

  • In conventional methods for measuring snow height, a graduated pole is installed on ground in an area of interest and the snow height is manually read from the pole. Recently, automated snow height measurement systems have been introduced to improve the conventional methods. The automated measurement systems, however, are quite expensive since they use the reflection of ultrasonic waves or laser beams. In addition, it is not easy to move the location of the automated measure systems. This paper proposes a snow height measurement system equipped with image sensors and wireless communication capability via a USN and the Internet. The proposed system has a resolution of 5 cm and easy to deploy without difficulties, which can be usefully used to monitor unforseen local snowfalls.

  • In this paper, a method how to make Programmable Logic Array (PLA) design and inspection of circuit relative to recent 64bit microprocessor simple and easy was discussed. A design method using Random Access Memory (RAM), Read Only Memory (ROM) and PLA has been settled down in Very Large Scale Integrated Circuit (VLSI) and logical design, modifying circuit and inspection are easy in PLA so it holds fairly good advantages in the aspect of performance and cost. It is expected PLA will also occupy an important position as a basic factor in designing VLSI in the future.

  • The metacognitive experience of the ease or difficulty with which new, external information can be processed, referred to as 'processing fluency,' has been shown to influence a wide range of human judgments including truth judgments, familiarity judgments, risk perception, evaluation, and preference (see Alter and Oppenheimer 2009 for a review). The current research explores the possibility of a consumer's product innovativeness judgment based on the difficulty of processing new information. In specific, this study examines if the inferential link between (dis)fluency-(un)familiarity can feed into the perception of innovativeness. This study also explores how a consumer's processing motivation can moderate the consumer's reliance on processing fluency in judgments and how the influence of fluency can vary depending on judgment task orders. In an experiment, participants rated a new product's innovativeness and then indicated their product attitude (or vice versa depending on the judgment task order condition) after reading a product review article that was printed in either an easy-to-read or a difficult-to-read font (for fluency manipulation). The findings show that low need for cognition individuals infer higher product innovativeness when processing product information is difficult rather than easy, consistent with the common assumption that 'new information is more difficult to process than familiar information.' The findings also suggest that once low fluency is attributed to innovativeness, it may no longer lead to a negative response to the product. High need for cognition individuals' judgments on product innovativeness are not affected by fluency. The findings also demonstrate a judgment task order effect on the use of fluency in judgments (e.g., Xu and Schwarz 2005). This study provides the first evidence that an individual's fluency experience can be used as a source of information in product innovativeness judgments especially under low processing motivation conditions. The findings can help marketers better understand the malleability of consumer judgments and perceptions of product characteristics (e.g., product innovativeness) by demonstrating an interesting interplay of processing fluency, processing motivation, and judgment task-related contextual factors.
