Dokdo, a group of 33 small and rocky Islets, in the East Sea have been administered by Korea for years since 1953 and are currently occupied by Korean Police Unit. Located about 217Km off the eastern border of Korea and 87Km east of UIleung Island in North Gyeongsang Province. Situated in the East Sea of Korea, Dokdo itself has valuable strategic implications for Korea as well as another countries such as Russia, Japan, U.SA etc. The first historical testimonies to Dokdo were in Korean documents referring to it as a part of an independent island district known as Ulleung Island(Usanguk), which was incorporated into Silla Kingdom in 512 A.D. in '1454 Sejong Authentic History'. Historically, since at least 1881, the island has been called Dokdo by Koreans, meaning 'Rock Island' or 'Lonely Island'. Also Korea, which regained a full sovereignty and have exercised it for decades continuously, keeps a small police detachment on the Island. That is, Dokdo is under effective control of Korea until today. Therefore Dokdo, which is a problem that is related to our territory and sovereignty, is clearly a cluster of Islands of Korea.
In May 2023, a free-living marine nematode species from the genus Parapinnanema was identified in the subtidal zone of Ulleungdo Island, the East Sea, Korea. Specimens were collected using the Smith-McIntyre Grab. These specimens exhibited close similarities to Parapinnanema imbricatum from the sublittoral of Moneron Island, particularly in terms of general characteristics, such as the detailed structure of the buccal cavity, the complex and ringed structure of the cuticle, the copulatory apparatus, spinneret, and the female genital system. However, the Korean specimens of Parapinnanema imbricatum also displayed distinctive features compared to the original description, including a relatively elongated body (3,317-4,339 ㎛ vs. 3,100-4,200 ㎛) and a narrower body width (66-77 ㎛ vs. 71-85 ㎛). Additionally, the diameter of the head was relatively shorter(24-29 ㎛ vs. 28-36 ㎛). This paper offers a comprehensive morphological description, along with illustrations and DIC photomicrographs, of P. imbricatum from Korean waters.
Geographically Cheju Island is located in the southmost part of Korea. Cheju Province, the largest. island in Korea, consists of one major island, Cheju, and other minor islands including Chuja Island. The province is located in around 140 km from Mokpo on the north, about 272 km from Pusan. Tsushima Island of Japan on the northeast, and Shanhai of the China across the East China Sea to the west.(omitted)
This paper covers the issues including geopolitical effects of sea power on sea space in East Asia and its nature in a perspective of the past and the present. This paper analyzes the significance of Sea Power which is emphasized in Mahan's Theory of Insular Dominance and grasps the geopolitical nature of Sea Power. Along with this awareness, it deals with the problem of designated strategic phenomenon that is spreading to the Pacific Ocean with the concept of the Island Chain in China in the 21st century. Around the turn of 20th century, Japan materialized the policy of Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere which was planned to expand power sphere in sea space in the East Asia based on sea power and China took shape of the concept of Island Chain in the 21st century, which has divided sea space in East Asia. Under the circumstance that China's policy of island chain faced the resistance from countries in the East Asia as well as the USA, the question about whether Korea's policy of depending on sea power is valuable even in the 21st century has been raised.

Thirteen decapod crustaceans of Dokdo Island were identified and classified based on samples collected around Dokdo Island from May 1999 to November 2004. Of the 13 species, 7 were unrecorded from Dokdo Island: Axiopsis princeps, Pagurus angustus, Pagurus japonicus, Pagurus nigrivittatus, Pagurus spina, Portunus trituberculatus, and Hemigrapsus penicillatus. Of these 7 species, Pagurus nigrivittatus and Pagurus spina were new to the Korean decapod fauna. However, P. spina was only reported as the type series from the Pacific coast of northern Japan. Its geographic range now extends to the East Sea. To date, 25 decapod crustaceans (1 caridean, 1 thalassinidean, 11 anomurans, and 12 brachyurans) have been reported from Dokdo Island.

Sea level variations and sea surface circulations in the Korean seas were observed by Topex/Poseidon altimeter data from 1993 through 1997. In sea level variations, the West and South Sea showed relatively high variations with comparison to the East Sea. Then, the northern and southern area in the West Sea showed the range of 20∼30cm and 18∼24cm, and the northern west of Jeju island and the southern west of Tsushima island in the South Sea showed the range of 15∼20cm and 10∼15cm, respectively. High variations in the West Sea were results to the inflow in sea surface of Yellow Sea Warm Current (YSWC) and bottom topography. Sea level variations in the South Sea were due to two branch currents (Jeju Warm Current and East Korea Warm Current) originated from Kuroshio Current (KC). In sea surface circulations, there existed remarkably three eddies circulations in the East Sea that are mainly connected with North Korea Cold Current (NKCC), East Korea Warm Current (EKWC) and Tushima Warm Current (TWC). Their eddies are caused basically to the influence of currents in sea surface circulations; Cyclone (0.03 cm/see) in the Wonsan bay off shore with NKCC, and anticyclone (0.06 cm/see) in the southwestern area of Ulleung island with EKWC, and cyclone (0.01 cm/see) in the northeastern area of Tushima island with TWC, respectively.

High concentration of chlorophyll a occurred around the Ulleung Warm Eddy off Ulleung Island in the East Sea of Korea in spring season. The abnormal distributions of chlorophyll a were captured by satellite remote sensing and measured field data. The temporal and spatial scale of the abnormal distributions were around 20days and 50km diameter off Ullung Island. The anomalies were quantified b)'estimated chlorophyll a derived from OCM and SeaWiFS ocean color data from 2000 to 2004. The origin of abnormal hish concentrations was estimated by this study. It was that suspended material discharged from the Nakdong River and the coastal water located in the southeastern part of Korean Peninsula moved to northeastern coast, and then moved to off Ullung island, The high chlorophyll a concentrations including inorganic materials were accumulated by anticyclonic eddy such as the Ullung Warm Eddy around Ullung island in the East Sea of Korea in spring season.

In order to understand the tidal current and mean flow at the west channel of Yeoja Bay in the South Sea of Korea, numerical model experiments and vorticity analysis were carried out. The currents flow north at flood and south at ebb respectively and have the reversing form in the west channel. Topographical eddies are found in the surroundings of Dunbyong Island in the east of the channel. The flood currents flow from the waters near Naro Islands through the west channel and the coastal waters near Geumo Islands through the east channel. The ebb currents from the Yeoja Bay flow out along the west and the east channels separately. The south of Nang Island have weak flows because the island is located in the rear of main tidal stream. Currents are converged at ebb and diverged at flood in the northwest of Jeokgum Island. Tidal current ellipses show reversing form in the west channel but a kind of rotational form in the east channel. As the results of tide induced mean flows, cyclonic and anticyclonic topographical eddies at the northern tip but eddies with opposite spin at the southern tip are found in the west channel of Yeoja Bay. The topographical eddies around the islands and narrow channels are created from the vorticity formed at the land shore by the friction between tidal currents and the west channel.
Monthly mean chlorophyll concentration in the East Sea was estimated from the ocean color observed by the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) on Nimbus-7 satellite which had performed various remote sensing missions from 1979 to 1986. The areas of high chlorophyll concentration were found in the sea between Siberia coast and Sakhalin Island, in the Donghan Bay and in the Ulleung Basin. In the southwestern East Sea, especially in the area near Ulleung Island, the yearly maximum chlorophyll concentration occurred in December. The chlorophyll concentration in Ulleung Basin in December was about two times higher than during spring bloom in April. The early winter bloom occurred in the warm side of the front that was formed between warm water from the East China Sea and nutrition rich cold water from the northern East Sea.
