  • The monthly mean sea levels at 48 stations located at the East and Yellow Seas coasts of Korea, Russia and Japan are processed to investigate seasonal sea level variations. The strong seasonal variations are found to be at the west coast of Korea (42.1 cm in Kunsan), in the region of the Korea strait and near the southern part of Primorye (30-33 cm); the weak ones near the southwestern coast of the Sakhalin Island (10-12 cm). Practically for the whole study area except the southwest Sakhalin, the general picture of the seasonal sea level changes is alike: the mean sea level rises in summer-autumn and falls in winter-spring. The spectral analysis of the records also shows that the seasonal oscillations strongly dominate in the sea level variations, more than 80% or total energy in the southern part of the investigated region and 50-70% in the northern part relate to these oscillations. The annal peak significantly prevails in spectra of the monthly sea levels for the majority of stations, the semiannual peak is also well manifested, but the seasonal peaks of higher order (corresponding to the periods of four and three months) reveal only at some records. The maximal amplitudes of annual component by a least square method are found at the Yellow Sea coast of Korea (20-21 cm) and also near the Japanese coast of the korea Strait (19-19 cm). The semiannual component has the maximal amplitudes (3-4 cm) near the south and southwestern coasts of the Sakhalin Island. The annual range of the sea levels is much weaker here than in the other regions, the relative investment of the seasonal oscillations in total energetic budget is only 35-40%, annual ($A_1$) and semiannual ($A_2$) components have nearly the same amplitude (seasonal factor $F=A_1/A_2=0.9-1.2$). On the basis of the present examination on sea level changes together with the results of Tomizawa et. al.(1984) the whole investigated area may be divided into 10 subregions, 2 of them are related to the Yellow Sea and Western part of the Korea Strait (Y1, Y2), the other ones (E1-E8) to the East Sea.

  • Typhoons occur intensively between July and October, and the sea level is the highest during this time. In particular, the mean sea level in summer in Korea is higher than the annual mean sea level about 14.5cm in the west coast, 9.0 to 14.5cm in the south coast, and about 9.0 cm in the east coast. When the rising the sea level and a large typhoon overlap in summer, it can cause surges and flooding in low-lying coastal areas. Therefore, accurate calculation of the surge height is essential when designing coastal structures and assessing stability in order to reduce coastal hazards on the lowlands. In this study, the typhoon surge heights considering the summer mean sea level rise (SH_m) was calculated, and the validity of the analysis of abnormal phenomena was reviewed by comparing it with the existing surge height considering the annual mean sea level (SH_a). As a result of the re-analyzed study of typhoon surge heights for BOLAVEN (SANBA), which influenced in August and September during the summer sea level rise periods, yielded the differences of surge heights (cm) between SH_a and SH_m 7.8~24.5 (23.6~34.5) for the directly affected zone of south-west (south-east) coasts, while for the indirect southeast (south-west) coasts showed -1.0~0.0 (8.3~12.2), respectively. Whilst the differences between SH_a and SH_m of typhoons CHABA (KONG-REY) occurred in October showed remarkably lessened values as 5.2~ 14.2 (19.8~21.6) for the directly affected south-east coasts and 3.2~6.3 (-3.2~3.7) for the indirectly influenced west coast, respectively. The results show the SH_a does not take into account the increased summer mean sea level, so it is evaluated that it is overestimated compared to the surge height that occurs during an actual typhoon. Therefore, it is judged that it is necessary to re-discuss the feasibility of the surge height standard design based on the existing annual mean sea level, along with the accurate establishment of the concept of surge height.

  • This study discusses the engineering characteristics and distribution of marine clay in Pohang by providing evidence that Pohang area has been upheaving in connection with the changes of sea level and geographical development in the Babt Coast. It is estimated that the sea level of the East Coast about 10,000 years ago had been 25 meters below than that of the present. The corroborative fact is that the marine clay deposited below the sea level due to the changes of the crust in Pohang is usually found above the sea level. Judging from their OCR values of leas than 0.77 and Bu/po'ratio of less than 0.14 at the depth of 7.8 meters below the ground level, marine clays of Dohu 1-dong and Jangsung-dong in Pohang City are presumed to be in a state of underconsolidation. However, more sophisticated measures and analysis are needed to prove it.

  • The mechanism of cold core eddy formation was investigated using boundary conditions between the East China coastal cold water and the Kuroshio Warm Current, wind data related to the monsoon which was measured by QuikSCAT, and the bottom topography of the East China Sea. When winds blow from the southeast at an intensity comparable to that in the winter period in 1999 and 2003, the warm Kuroshio and Tsushima Current became stronger, and temperatures were considerably higher than those of the extended cold water of the coast of the East China. At that time, the cold water was captured by warm water from the Kuroshio and the Tsushima Current. This facilitated the formation of mesoscale cold core eddies with diameter of 150km in the East China Sea in May, 1999 and February, 2003. The cold core eddy which was detected by NOAA, SeaWiFS and QuikSCAT satellites. The East China Sea is considered to be important not only as a good fishing ground but also nursery and spawning area for many kinds of fishes. Therefore, it would be worth studying spatio-temporal variations of the cold core eddy in the environmental conditions of the northwestern East China Sea using systematic remote sensing techniques.

  • Gijang Sea is located on the southeastern coast of Korea. This study establishes a basic system to identify optimal sites for the wave power generation. To achieve this goal, the field measurements were made at the field site in front of Dong-am fishing port at Gijang. In addition, we analyzed the offshore wave data at the Donghae buoy operated by Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) and compared the data with the wave characteristics in Gijang Sea. The main results were as follows. In winter, the wave direction in Gijang Sea ranged between east and south($90{\sim}180^{\circ}$). The main wave direction was east($90^{\circ}$). The Significant wave heights and periods were under 2 m and $5{\sim}15$ sec, respectively. A comparison of water depth and wave direction constitutes one(condition) of the important parameters for selecting the optimal site for the wave power generation.

  • A simple stratification/mixing model has been developed for shelf waters of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. The results are summarized in the form of maps of stratification parameter which utilized the estimates of tidal dissipation from non-linear two-dimensional tidal model of the region. Ultimate aim of this study is to evaluate the applicability of the tidal mixing criteria to the Yellow Sea especially for the offshore region near Taean Peninsula in the west coast of Korea using hydrographic data and computed stratification parameter.

  • Kweon et al. (2004) proposed the calculation method of Expected Overtopping Probability (EOP) that considers the occurrence frequency distribution of real sea tide. The method was applied for the comparison of the EOP of Mukho and Busan sea. They showed that the tide occurrence frequency had a great effect on the EOP and the value becomes smaller as the standard deviation of the frequency comes bigger. The present study following Kweon et al.'s method estimates the EOP characteristic of the crest elevation located on East, South, and West sea. The study shows that the EOP becomes smaller following East, South, West sea in order.

  • Seasonal variations of water mass distributions in the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and the adjecent seas of Cehju Island, are investigated. A common seasonal variation over these whole areas is shown. Warm and saline waters are extended northwestward into the Yellow Sea in winter and retreated back southeastward to the East China Sea in summer. Barotropic numerical model results suggest that monsoon winds could drive such seasonal variations. Upwind flows play an important role in the processes. In the numerical model results, upwind flows are shifted to China. It is due to energy dissipations by complicated coast lines and shallow bottom topographies in the northern part of the Yellow Sea. The shifted routes of upwind flows agrees well with that of the southward extensions of the Yellow sea Bottom Cold Waters in summer.

  • Two new records of marine nematodes, belonging to the family Ironidae de Man, 1876, are reported based on the specimens collected from intertidal sediments from the west coast of Korea. Conilia sinensis is characterized by a relatively long body length, a well-developed buccal cavity with three claw-like teeth, the presence of a single spicule with transverse striations, the presence of rib-shaped telamons, and single precloacal supplement. Pheronous donghaiensis is distinguished from other species of the genus by a well-developed buccal cavity with four claw-like solid teeth and minute denticles, relatively short and thick spicules with the central septum, the presence of 8-9 curved tubular-shaped precloacal supplements, and a sharp pointed tail with three small tubular supplements arranged into two rows in males. In this report, we provide a taxonomic description and illustrations of two unrecorded species of the family Ironidae by differential interference contrast microscopy. This is the first taxonomic report on the species of the family Ironidae from Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the long-term variability of sea surface temperature (SST) and cluster analysis derived from in-situ data in the coastal oceanographic observation 8 stations (Sokcho, Jumunjin, Donghae, Jukbyeon, Pohang, Janggigab, Ulgi, Gampo) of the East Sea during 1971-2013. As a result of cluster analysis, SST variations in each area could be divided into two groups, which was a group A of Sokcho, Jumunjin, Donghae, and group B of Jukbyeon, Pohang, Janggigab, Ulgi, Gampo. The SST and SST anomalies at Sokcho, Jukbyeon, Pohang and Gampo during 1971-2013 showed the increase-trend with the variations of decadal-scale. Annual SST values also increased remarkably after 1988. The increases of SST for 43 years showed $2.26^{\circ}C$ at Sokcho, $1.99^{\circ}C$ at Jukbyeon, $1.11^{\circ}C$ at Pohang and $0.89^{\circ}C$ at Gampo. In particular, the SST variations of the northern areas were higher than those of southern areas. The seasonal SSTs increased the order of Sokcho-Jukbyeon-Pohang-Gampo in fall and winter and that of Jukbyeon-Sokcho-Pohang-Gampo in spring and summer.
