Species diversity and distribution of the genus Colpomenia (Scytosiphonaceae, Phaeophyceae) along the coast of China

  • The marine brown algal genus Colpomenia has a worldwide distribution, with five species reported in Korea and Japan. However, no studies to date attempted to identify the number of species and geographical distribution of Colpomenia along Chinese coast. To fill the biodiversity knowledge gap, we analyzed 63 mitochondrial cox3 and 62 mitochondrial atp6 sequences of Colpomenia specimens collected from 30 localities along the Chinese coast. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference trees suggest the presence of at least three Colpomenia species (i.e., C. peregrina, C. claytoniae, and C. sinuosa) in China. C. peregrina and C. claytoniae are documented for the first time. C. sinuosa was only found in the South China Sea and its distribution didn't overlap with that of C. peregrina which was found in the Yellow-Bohai Sea and the East China Sea. C. claytoniae appears to be confined to three isolated islands in the East and the South China Sea, where it occurs in sympatry with, respectively, C. peregrina and C. sinuosa. Future study can focus on comparing eco-physiological differences of Colpomenia species in response to environmental variables and exploring possible genetic hybridization / introgression at inter-specific contact zones.

Caprellids (Amphipoda, Caprellidae) from the East Sea in Korea (한국 동해 해역의 바다대벌레류 (단각목))

  • This study on Korean capreilids (Amphipoda, Capreiiidae) was based on the materlais collected from 23 locailties in the coast of the East Sea and the Ulrung Island. 17 species of genus Caprella were identified. Among them, 3 species are newly reported from Korea: Caprella cristibrachium Mayer, 1903, C. linearis (Linnaeus, 1767) and C. mixta Mayer, 1903. 6 species are new records from the East Sea: Caprella brevirostris Mayer, 1903, C. decipiens Mayer, 1890, C. equilibra Say, 1818, C. gigantochir Mayer, 1903, C. tsugarensis Utinomi, 1947 and C. verrucosa Boeck, 1872. As a result, Korean caprellid fauna consists of 5 genera, 30 species.

  • A new gastrotrich species of the genus Dendrodasys (Dactylopodolidae) is described on the basis of specimens collected from sublittoral fine sandy bottoms at Uljin, East Sea and at Gujwa, the northeastern coast of Jeju Island, South Korea. Dendrodasys duplus is characterized by a triangular head with lateral lobes extending outward, two pairs of pestle organs posterior to the lateral cephalic lobes, a pair of anterior adhesive tubes, the absence of dorsal, lateral and ventral adhesive tubes, large posterior adhesive tubes arising from the anterior third of the caudal peduncle, and paired testes of different lengths. The genus Dendrodasys is recorded for the first time in East Asia.

  • The urban pollution if affected by local environmental, so it is necessary to consider area characteristics such as emission source and meteorological phenomena, in studying urban air pollution. Ulsan is laocated on south-east coast and has many industrial facilities, so many people have concerned about air pollution. This study contain conducting numerical simulation of air pollutant concentration considered land and sea breeze in Ulsan area with the numerical model.

Decapod Crustaceans of Dokdo Island, Korea

  • Thirteen decapod crustaceans of Dokdo Island were identified and classified based on samples collected around Dokdo Island from May 1999 to November 2004. Of the 13 species, 7 were unrecorded from Dokdo Island: Axiopsis princeps, Pagurus angustus, Pagurus japonicus, Pagurus nigrivittatus, Pagurus spina, Portunus trituberculatus, and Hemigrapsus penicillatus. Of these 7 species, Pagurus nigrivittatus and Pagurus spina were new to the Korean decapod fauna. However, P. spina was only reported as the type series from the Pacific coast of northern Japan. Its geographic range now extends to the East Sea. To date, 25 decapod crustaceans (1 caridean, 1 thalassinidean, 11 anomurans, and 12 brachyurans) have been reported from Dokdo Island.

  • Mass mortalities of the farmed sea squirt, Halocynthia roretzi, occurred in August, 2006 along the Gyeongbuk coasts of the East Sea without any pathological symptom. Suspecting the No. 10 typhoon, Wukong, which had passed over the relevant locations in the middle of August, 2006 as a culprit of the mortalities, we compared water temperature stratifications of the affected coasts before and after the typhoon. Just prior to the typhoon, cold waters lower than $15^{\circ}C$ were stratified at depths deeper than 10m probably by a persisting upwelling of cold bottom waters. The typhoon enforced water off-coast waters into coasts for 5 days, replacing the cold waters at depths $10{\sim}20m$ which can be justified by Ekman Spiral Effect. The results were an increment of water temperature by $10^{\circ}C$ and more at depths where sea squirts were suspended. The sudden elevation of water temperature might drive the sea squirts under abnormal stress to mass mortality.

On The Seasonal Variations Of Surface Current In The Eastern Sea Of Korea (August 1979 - April 1980)

  • The seasonal variations of surface current patterns in the Japan Sea were drawn out from the results of drift bottle experiments, current measurements and hydrographic observations during 1979∼1980. The North Korean Cold Current(NKCC) and the East Korean Warm Current(EKWC) were common features of circulation in the eastern sea of Korea. The intrusion of NKCC along the Korean coast became strong in summer(average velocity of 47.4cm/sec off Jumunjin and 23.4cm/sec near Jugbyeon) when the Tsushima Current was strong. But there was no indication of the NKCC in November 1979. Dynamic topography(August & November 1979) and satellite picture(November 1979) seemed to show the topographic steering of EKWC beginning off Janggigab. Drift bottles arrived at the Japaness coast were affected significantly by the strong Tsushima Current in summer and by the predominant northwesterlies in winter instead of weak current.

A Study of the Trace Elements in Sea-weed (Dried Laver) (한국산 김중의 미량금속 함량 조사연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the contents of heavy metals such as iron, copper, lead, cadmium, magnesium, platium in connection with water pollution in sea weed (dried laver) collected from the west, south, south- west, and east coasts of Korea. The results of the study are as follows; Iron was shown the highest value (1.280ppm) in the wild laver from the south coast. Copper was detected in larger qauntities (0.169 ppm) in green laver than in any other kinds of laver observed in this study. Lead was detected in larger quantities (0.195ppm) in the usual laver and green laver from the south-west coast as compared with the other coasts. Although cadmium and platium was also detected from every kind of laver, the concentrations were not over the allowance of the residual.

Maturation and Spawning of the Flathead Flounder Hippoglossoides dubius off the coast of Gangwon Province, East Sea of Korea (동해 강원연안 홍가자미(Hippoglossoides dubius)의 성숙과 산란)

  • Flathead flounder Hippoglossoides dubius is a commercially important fish in the coastal waters of Gangwon Province, which is its spawning ground and breeding habitat. A total of 1,669 gonads were sampled monthly from February 2011 to May 2013 to investigate ecological characteristics, such as variations in maturation and spawning by gonad index, visual maturity stage, histological observations and oocyte diameter. Males were numerically dominant over females in the fishing grounds year round. The spawning season was from January to April, and the peak was from February to March. Oocyte number as a measure of fecundity was between 27,372 and 915,209 eggs with a length range of 26.0-48.7 cm TL, while the largest oocyte grew to 0.9-1.4mm in egg diameter during its spawning season. The relationship between fecundity and total length was $F=0.0016TL^{5.2539}$. The smallest mature lengths of the females and males were 28.4 and 22.6 cm respectively, and the 50% mature lengths of females and males were 32.9, 26.9 cm respectively.
