Based on the distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) technique, plastic optical fibers (POFs) are attractive candidates to measure deformations of geotechnical structures because they can withstand large strains before rupture. Understanding the mechanical interaction between an embedded POF and the surrounding soil or rock is a necessary step towards establishing an effective POF-based sensing system for geotechnical monitoring. This paper describes a first attempt to evaluate the feasibility of POF-based soil deformation monitoring considering the POF-soil interfacial properties. A series of pullout tests were performed under various confining pressures (CPs) on a jacketed polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) POF embedded in soil specimens. The test results were interpreted using a fiber-soil interaction model, and were compared with previous test data of silica optical fibers (SOFs). The results showed that the range of CP in this study did not induce plastic deformation of the POF; therefore, the POF-soil and the SOF-soil interfaces had similar behavior. CP was found to play an important role in controlling the fiber-soil interfacial bond and the fiber measurement range. Moreover, an expression was formulated to determine whether a POF would undergo plastic deformation when measuring soil deformation. The plasticity of POF may influence the reliability of measurements, especially for monitored geo-structures whose deformation would alternately increase and decrease. Taken together, these results indicate that in terms of the interfacial parameters studied here the POF is feasible for monitoring soil deformation as long as the plastic deformation issue is carefully addressed.
Coulomb's theory has traditionally been used for the estimation of active earth pressure acting on rigid walls. However, many experimental data show that active earth pressures on rough, rigid walls are nonlinearly distributed. This is due to the arching effects produced by friction between the wall and backfill materials when the wall translates away from the backfill. Although there are analyses that take arching into consideration f3r a horizontal backfill surface and a vertical rigid wall, these analyses were derived for homogeneous backfill. Therefore, it is not possible to use these analyses for a caisson backfilled with crushed rock and sand, a common type of rigid wall for harbor structures. In this study, a new formulation for calculation of the nonlinear active earth pressure acting on a caisson backfilled with crushed rock and sand is proposed considering both internal friction angles and unit weights of the crushed rock and sand.

This paper investigates the caharactheristics of the earth pressure magnigue and distribution in jointed rockmass for a safe and economic design and construction of earth retaining structures installed in rock stratum. For this purpose, this study will first investigate the limitations and problems of the existing earth pressure studies and then to overcome them th study will conduct the discontinuum numerical parametric studies based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM), which can consider the joint characteristics in rock stratum. The controlled parameters include rock type and joint conditions (joint shear strength and joint angle), and the magnitude and distribution characteristics of earth pressure have been investigated considering the interactions between the ground and the retaining structures. In addition, the comparison between the earth pressures induced in rock stratum and Peck's earth pressure for soil ground has been carried out. From the comparison, it is found that the earth pressure magnitude and distribution in jointed rockmass has been highly affected by rock type and joint condition and has shown different characteristics compared with the Peck's empirical earth pressure. This result would hereafter be utilized as an important information and a useful data for the assessment of earth pressure for designing a retaining structures installed in jointed rockmass.
The Rankine(1857)'s earth pressure and the Hong and Yun(1995a)'s earth pressure was applied to analyze the lateral displacement of diaphragm wall applied to the Top-Down construction method using the computer program, which is a common design program for diaphragm wall. The lateral displacement estimated by the computer program was compared with the lateral displacement measured by inclinometer. The Rankine's earth pressure has been widely used to design the diaphragm wall in the analysis of computer program. As the result of comparison, the lateral displacement of diaphragm wall was predicted differently according to the applied earth pressures. The behavior of lateral displacement predicted by the Rankine's earth pressure was different with displacement measured by inclinometer and the lateral displacement at the bottom part was overestimated. However, the lateral displacement predicted by the Hong and Yun's earth pressure is similar to the behavior and maximum value of real displacement. Therefore, the Hong and Yun's earth pressure is more suitable than the Rankine' earth pressure to design the diaphragm walls applied to the Top-Down Construction Method.
If an active displacement occurs on a wall with finite size, the ground behind the wall forms shapes of 3-dimensional wedges and 3-dimensional active earth pressure are applied on the wall. In the previous studies, shapes of 3-dimensional wedges were measured and the resultant of 3-dimensional active earth pressure has been calculated. In this study, the magnitude and the distribution of 3-dimensional active earth pressure depending on the size of a rectangular wall, which was defined by the aspect ratio (h/w), that is, the ratio between the height and the width of wall, were measured and compared with previous 3-dimensional models. The result shows that, the horizontal displacement (S) of the wall is approx 0.12% of the height of wall (h). The resultant 3-dimensional active earth pressure is similar to that of Karstedt (1982). The distributions of earth pressures on the wall are parabolic shape. The peak earth pressure was measured at the 0.5~0.55 depth from the ground surface. The reduction factor of 3-dimensional active earth pressure against the 2-dimensional earth pressure (${\alpha}$) depending the aspect ratio (h/w) is presented by the diagram.

In the present study, an analytical solution method is proposed for the seismic design of cantilever sheet pile walls and anchored sheet pile walls used in harbor construction. Seepage pressures, together with a change in magnitudes of effective horizontal soil pressures, are included in the proposed solution method. Also, the Mononobe-Okabe analysis as well as the Westergaard and Matsuo-Ohara theory of hydrodynamic pressures is used in the proposed method. Further, the choice of values for safety factors is examined for the seismic design of anchored sheet pile walls, and the effects of various parameters(dredge line slope, differential in water levels, anchor position, and wall friction angle) on embedment depth, anchor force, and maximum bending moment are analyzed for anchored walls in dense sand deposits. In addition. the tables that could be used for preliminary seismic design of anchored walls in dense sands are presented. The proposed method deals with the sheet pile walls with free earth support.
Existing cut-and-cover tunnels are designed regardless of cut-slope under the assumption that the overburden weight of backfill soil acts on tunnel arch and the earth pressure at rest acts on tunnel walls. However, actual earth pressures acting on the tunnel lining depend on open-cut size composed of cut-slope and cut-width, and thus the tunnel lining shows a different structural behavior. This study investigated the effect of cut-slope on structural behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnel lining as follows; Firstly, a comprehensive numerical analysis method using FLAC2D code was used and verified by field measurements of tunnel profile. Secondly, based on the verified numerical analysis technique, earth pressure acting on the lining, and displacement and sectional force developed on the lining were estimated with various shapes of cut-slopes$30^{\circ}\;, 456{\circ},\; 60^{\circ},\; and\;75^{\circ}%). Numerical analysis results indicate that the steeper cut-slope shows the more displacement and moment of the tunnel lining.
This paper presents the measured performance of in-situ walls using the measured data collected from various deep excavation sites in urban area. A variety of in-situ wall systems from 57 sites were considered, including H-pile walls, soil cement walls, cast-in-place pile walls, and diaphram walls. The examination included lateral wall movements as well as apparent earth pressure distributions. The measured data were thoroughly analyzed to investigate the effects of various components of in-situ wall system, such as types of wall and supporting system, on the lateral wall movement as well as on the apparent earth pressure distribution. The results wee then compared with the current design/analysis methods, and information is presented in chart formes to provide tools that can be used for design and analysis. Using the measured data, a semi-empirical equation for predicting deep excavation induced maximum lateral wall movement is suggested.

The present study was made based on the zero extension line theory and the well-known Mononobe-Okabe's to determine the dynamic earth pressures acting on the retaining walls. The zero extension line theory, which was proposed by Roscoe et al., assumes the coincidence between the loci of failure and the zero extension lines in soil mass. ln order to compute the dynamic earth pressure developed by an earthquake, it was assumed that for the vertical retaining walls with no surcharge, the backfill materials are dense and cohesionless sandy soils, there are no changes in soil parameters during earthquake, and the horizontal earthquake intensity is considered. The effects of horizontal earthquake intensity, internal friction angle of soil, wall friction angle and dilation angle, on the earth pressure coefficients were analysed. Final1y, the presented theories were successfully compared with the Mononobe-Okabe's as well.
In case of the lateral movement accurring at soft ground where a row of piles are installed, the crown failure at external arch zone of soil arching is firstly developed, and the cap failure at wedge zone in front of piles is lastly developed. Therefore, the lateral earth pressure acting on a row of piles due to soil movement should be calculated in each condition of crown and cap failures around piles. A theoretical equation of crown failure can be proposed using a cylindrical cavity expansion theory. The theoretical equation of crown failure is mainly affected by two factors. One is related to soil properties such as internal friction angle, cohesion and horizontal pressure, and the other is related to pile factors such as diameter, installation interval. Meanwhile, the yield range of lateral earth pressure is established in the estimation of theoretical equation based on crown and cap failures around piles. The theoretical values based on crown and cap failures are compared with the experimental values. The experimental values are located in the range proposed by theoretical values. Thus, it is confirmed that the theoretical values proposed in the study are very reasonable.
