  • In this study, the fifteen month behavior of two geosynthetic reinforced walls which was constructed on the shallow weak ground was measured and analyzed. The walls were backfilled with clayey soil obtained from the construction site nearby, and the safety factors obtained from general limit equilibrium analysis were less than 1.3 in both wall. The measured and analyzed data were horizontal earth pressures, strain of reinforcements, and excess pore water pressures. The used reinforcements were nonwoven geotextile, woven geotextile and geogrid. Although the length of reinforcement was only 30% of wall height and the safety factors of the walls were less than 1.3, the walls were constructed without any problems on the such weak ground. The analysis results showed that the maximum strain of reinforcements were negligible and the strain was between 2.3 and 6.0% according to tensile characteristic of the reinforcements. The excess pore water pressure was not changed due to the rainfall and the horizontal earth pressures in upper and lower part of the walls were larger than the active and the rest pressure.

  • It is very important in designing civil engineering structures that the quantification of geological informations must be carried out in terms of importance. In this study, the geological informations are quantified and evaluated using analytic hierarchy process (AHP). A professional group was organized with 30 people in the field of civil engineering, transport, and geology. On the assumption that the civil engineering structure is linear such as highway or railroad, a survey of the group in terms of geological and hydro-geological elements has found that the hierarchy structure is composed of four levels. And fault structure is a primary factor which causes the stability of a linear civil engineering structure. The importance of geological items are arranged with fault (0.456), foliation/bedding plane(0.l65), lineation(0.144), ground water(0.124), and rock type(0.111).

  • The purpose of this study is to make and validate landslide susceptibility map using artificial neural network and GIS in Kangneung area. For this, topography, soil, forest, geology and land cover data sets were constructed as a spatial database in GIS. From the database, slope, aspect, curvature, water system, topographic type, soil texture, soil material, soil drainage, soil effective thickness, wood type, wood age, wood diameter, forest density, lithology, land cover, and lineament were used as the landslide occurrence factors. The weight of the each factor was calculated, and applied to make landslide susceptibility maps using artificial neural network. Then the maps were validated using rate curve method which can predict qualitatively the landslide occurrence. The landslide susceptibility map can be used to reduce associated hazards, and to plan land use and construction as basic data.

  • In earth pressure balance (EPB) shield TBM tunnelling, the application of soil conditioning which improves properties of the excavated muck by additives injection, is generally used for enhancing the performance of TBM. Therefore it is important to apply the soil conditioning in the numerical model which simulates excavation performance of TBM equipment, but related studies on a method that simulates soil conditioning are insufficient to date. Accordingly, in this study, an laboratory pressurized vane test apparatus was devised to evaluate the characteristics of conditioned soil. Using the apparatus, the vane shear tests were performed on foam-conditioned soil with different shear rates, and the test was numerically simulated with discrete element method (DEM). Finally, the contact properties of particles in DEM were determined by comparing the results of test and analysis, and it indicates that the applicability of pressurized vane test and DEM model for reproducing soil conditioning in TBM excavation model with DEM.

  • In the case of the existing method of underground pipe construction, the difficulty of the bedding compaction of pipe causes reducing the compaction efficiency and the stability of the underground facilities and conclusively damaging the structures. One of the methods to solve these problem is using the flowable fills as a backfill material. Therefore, in this study, numerical analysis of the underground pipe was performed in order to evaluate the behavior of pipe according to backfill mixtures. To estimate the deformation characteristic of the underground pipe, the displacement of the main part of the pipe, ground settlement and vertical earth pressures were measured in different backfill mixtures and maintaining the other conditions constantly. As a result of numerical analysis, using the flowable fills as the backfill material is better than using sand in reducing the ground settlement, the pipe deformation and the vertical earth pressure aspect.

  • After industrialization has been started, mankind needs and consumes more resources. Now, the resources depletion is a serious problem in the Earth. However, there are infinite resources in the Space. Especially, the Moon is the closest planet and has much resources, including Helium-3 and rare earths, which are needed to human being in the future. Humanity needs to reside on the moon to harvest these resources. For the resident, much resources, such as food, construction, and industrial materials, are needed. However, to transport these resources to the Moon from the Earth, an astronomical cost should be consumed. Thus, research is underway to support human activities by procuring resources locally. This is called In-Situ Resources Utilization (ISRU), which is the essential technology for the space development. In this paper, the reason why ISRU is essential and the its status are introduced and future research projects will be explained.

  • The purpose of this research is to introduce the new temporary earth retaining wall system using landslide stabilizing piles. This system is a self-supported retaining wall (SSR) without installing supports such as tiebacks, struts and rakers. The SSR is a kind of gravity structures consisting of twin parallel lines of piles driven below excavation level, tied together at head of soldier piles and landslide stabilizing piles by beams. In order to investigate applicability and safety of this system, a series of experimental model tests were carried out and the obtained results are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the measured data from seven different sites on which the SSR was used for excavation were collected and analyzed to investigate the characteristic behavior lateral wall movements associated with urban excavations in Korea. It is observed that lateral wall movements obtained from the experimental model is in good agreement with the general trend observed by in site measurements.

  • The supply of high quality filling materials for pavement base course or reclamation is getting harder. So, there is an attempt to use soft mudstones as an earth filling material in Pohang area. But the engineering properties of the soil deposit placed with soft mudstones have not been clearly evaluated yet. We investigated the water absorption and softening, the slaking behavior and the geological mechanism in order to obtain an effective way of estimating the magnitude of land subsidence and the reduction of soil strength. The applicability of soft mudstones is examined by a variety of laboratory tests and pilot-scale field tests. In addition, it is necessary to consider the environmental characteristics of soft mudstones as a reclaiming material, Consequently, the results from the current study can be used to prevent any construction defects due to the careless use of soft mudstones for the pavement base course or reclamation.

  • This study assesses forest fire susceptibility in Gangwon-do, South Korea, which hosts the largest forested area in the nation and constitutes ~21% of the country's forested land. With 81% of its terrain forested, Gangwon-do is particularly susceptible to wildfires, as evidenced by the fact that seven out of the ten most extensive wildfires in Korea have occurred in this region, with significant ecological and economic implications. Here, we analyze 480 historical wildfire occurrences in Gangwon-do between 2003 and 2019 using 17 predictor variables of wildfire occurrence. We utilized three machine learning algorithms—random forest, logistic regression, and support vector machine—to construct wildfire susceptibility prediction models and identify the best-performing model for Gangwon-do. Forest and soil map data were integrated as important indicators of wildfire susceptibility and enhanced the precision of the three models in identifying areas at high risk of wildfires. Of the three models examined, the random forest model showed the best predictive performance, with an area-under-the-curve value of 0.936. The findings of this study, especially the maps generated by the models, are expected to offer important guidance to local governments in formulating effective management and conservation strategies. These strategies aim to ensure the sustainable preservation of forest resources and to enhance the well-being of communities situated in areas adjacent to forests. Furthermore, the outcomes of this study are anticipated to contribute to the safeguarding of forest resources and biodiversity and to the development of comprehensive plans for forest resource protection, biodiversity conservation, and environmental management.

  • Rock mass classification results have a great influence on construction schedule and budget as well as tunnel stability in tunnel design. A total of 3,526 tunnels have been constructed in Korea and the associated techniques in tunnel design and construction have been continuously developed, however, not many studies have been performed on how to assess rock mass quality and grade more accurately. Thus, numerous cases show big differences in the results according to inspectors' experience and judgement. Hence, this study aims to suggest a more reliable rock mass classification (RMR) model using machine learning algorithms, which is surging in availability, through the analyses based on various rock and rock mass information collected from boring investigations. For this, 11 learning parameters (depth, rock type, RQD, electrical resistivity, UCS, Vp, Vs, Young's modulus, unit weight, Poisson's ratio, RMR) from 13 local tunnel cases were selected, 337 learning data sets as well as 60 test data sets were prepared, and 6 machine learning algorithms (DT, SVM, ANN, PCA & ANN, RF, XGBoost) were tested for various hyperparameters for each algorithm. The results show that the mean absolute errors in RMR value from five algorithms except Decision Tree were less than 8 and a Support Vector Machine model is the best model. The applicability of the model, established through this study, was confirmed and this prediction model can be applied for more reliable rock mass classification when additional various data is continuously cumulated.
