In this study, the four types of improvement methods (increase self weight and reducing sliding force etc.) were proposed depending on install location with compaction grouting to improve seismic performance of existing port structure and optimal methods by analyzing the effects of improvement (stability, constructability and economy) by theoretical and numerical methods. From the dynamic time history analysis for artificial seismic waves, the results indicated that the horizontal displacement after improvement decreased compared to before improvement, however the displacement reduction effect among improvement methods was not significantly different. Slope stability based on the strength reduction method and the limit equilibrium analysis method, it is confirmed that the passive pile method is more safe than other methods. It is due to the shear strength at the failure surface is increased. In addition, the analysis of constructability and economy showed that the reduction of earth pressure method (type 02) and the passive pile method (type 03) are excellent. However, in the case of the passive pile method is concerned that there is a shortage of design cases and the efficiency can be reduced depend on various constraints such as ground conditions.
This study analysed student teachers' notable questions about the earth science contents in the elementary science textbooks. The contents of notable questions were defined as ‘notable question contents 1' and 'notable question contents 2'. Both the question contorts are contents about which the number of questions is above three times and from two times to three times as much as the mean number of questions per page of each unit respectively. The results are as follows. First, question contents 1 are found as 'clouds observation', 'geological strata formation' and so on. Question contents 2, 'rainfall measurement', 'moon's movement during one night' and so on are found. Second, the number of interrelationships of main terms in questions increased in each question of question contents 1, but 4 term-patterns are found more in question contents 2 than question contents 1. Third, high interrelationship patterns of terms in question contents 1 are 'coal and petroleum-generation', 'metamorphosis-heat and pressure', 'metamorphosis-heat and pressure-metamorphic rocks', 'planet-sun-comet-revolution' and in question contents 2. 'constellation plate-use', 'dryness and wetness hygrometer-principle', 'seismograph-principle-earthquake', 'earth rotation axis-tilting-occurrence', 'dryness and wetness hygrometer-principle-humidity' and so on. The sources of questions analysed in this study are estimated as the content construction system of textbooks, or students' general questions about the earth science contents. If this is the former, the problems in texts and illustrations in textbooks should be articulated and resolved. And if the latter, the elementary science curriculum has to be reconsidered in view of scientific literacy in earth science.
In the case of two-dimensional analysis generally applied in the analysis of Earth Retaining Wall, mutual interference occurs due to earth pressure, when the excavation width is small, and in the section where the excavation width is small, and the resulting influence makes it difficult to secure reliability in the horizontal displacement of the retaining wall when performing 2-dimensional analysis in a section with a small excavation width. This study performed two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element analyses on excavation depth (H) and excavation width (B) under various conditions for the H-pile earth wall, in the geological conditions of clayey soil, sandy soil, and weathered rock, and examined the relationship between excavation width and horizontal displacement according to each condition, to identify the boundary of the excavation width, which is the range of mutual interference caused by earth pressure. As a result, it was possible to clearly distinguish the analytical boundary according to the excavation width only in the clayey soils with relatively large horizontal displacement. It is concluded that it is reasonable to perform a 3D finite element analysis, which is similar to the actual behavior, if the excavation scale (B/H) is 2.0 or less, with the digging width less than 12 m at a digging depth of 10 m or less, and with the the one less than 24 m at a digging depth of 10 m or more, and that 2-dimensional finite element analysis may be used in cases where the excavation width is greater than 12 m when the excavation scale (B/H) is 2.0 or more and the excavation depth is 10 m or less, and the excavation width is greater than 24 m at an excavation depth of 10 m or more.

The growth of cities requires the construction of new tunnels close to the existing ones. Prediction and control of ground movement around the tunnel are important especially in urban area. The ground respond due to EPB (Earth Pressure Balance) pressure are investigated using the finite element method by ABAQUS in intersection of the triplet tunnels (Line 2, 3 and 4) of Mashhad Urban Railway in Iran. Special attention is paid to the effect of EPB pressure on the tunnel face displacement. The results of the analysis show that in EPB tunneling, surface settlement and face displacement is related to EPB pressure. Moreover, it is found that tunnel construction sequence is a great effect in face displacement value. For this study, this value in Line 4 where is excavated after line 3, is smaller than that line. In addition, the trend of the displacement curves are changed with the depth for all lines where is located in above and below, close to and above the centerline tunnel face for Line 2, 3 and 4, respectively. It is concluded that: (i) the surface settlement decreases with increasing EPB pressure on the tunnel face; (ii) at a constant EPB pressure, the tunnel face displacement values increase with depth. In addition, this is depended on the tunneling sequence; (iii) the trend of the displacement curves change with the depth.
This paper is the continuation of our previous paper, which we refer to as numerical analysis of phase behavior and flow properties in an injection tubing during gas phase CO2 injection. Our study in this paper show the results during supercritcal CO2 injection under the same project. Geological CO2 storage technology is one of the most effective method to decrease climate change due to high injectivity and storage capacity and economics. A demonstration-scale CO2 storage project was performed in a deep aquifer in the Pohang basin, Korea for a technological development in a large-scale CO2 storage project. A problem to consider in the early stage design of the project was to analyze CO2 phase change and flow characteristics during CO2 injection. To solve this problem, injection conditions were decided by calculating injection rate, pressure, temperature, and thermodynamic properties. For this research, we simulated and numerically analyzed CO2 phase change from liquid to supercritical phase and flow characteristics in injection tubing using OLGA program. Our results provide discharge pressure and temperature conditions of CO2 injection combined with a pressure of an aquifer.
Gravity changes due to variations of groundwater level were measured at a ground water monitoring well, which is located at Kum-san, Korea, from November 2008 to September 2009 using Portable Earth Tide (PET) gravimeter. Groundwater level was monitored simultaneously with gravity observations. To extract gravity information from groundwater, we reduced gravity effect from atmospheric surface pressure, earth tides and its loading effect, polar motion and meter drift. In addition, in June 4, 2009, there was a pumping test at he observation well, and groundwater level and gravity variations were observed together successfully. Observation of gravity along with groundwater level is potentially useful for monitoring of aquifer water mass balance and water resources.
A small-scale reinforced earth wall was constructed in a laboratory to investigate the effect of wall rigidity and of construction sequence on the wall. A full continuous wall facing and a discrete wall facing were designed and constructed for tests. These two different facing systems should adapt different construction procedures due to their different facing shapes. The model wall was built with geo-grid reinforcement, sand, and facings on rigid surface. The model wall was instrumented with earth pressure gages, LVDTs, and strain gages. The experimental results have shown differences in wall behavior related to construction sequence and types of wall facing. It is found in this study that the reinforced earth wall built with full continuous facing is safer than the reinforced earth wall built with the discrete wall facing.
The design of fabric reinforced retaining wall structure was discussed in this article. It was confirmed that the reinforced retaining earth wall which was designed by new theoretical formulae developed this time was stable structurally and economically. The plastic fabric filter which was placed in layers behind the facing element reduced the lateral earth pressure on the wall elements in comparison with a conventional retaining earth walls. The reinforcing characteristics of earth wall was governed by the spacing of fabric layers, effective length of fabrics, particle distribution and compaction, and thus it is essential that, in the construction field, the reinforcing strips should be selected in order to develop the maximum friction forces bet.eon soil and fabric filters. The maximum tensile stress developed from the reinforcing strips was appeared at a little far distance from the back of skin element and it was not well agreed with the Rankine's theory but distributed well as a symmetrical shape against the point of the maximum tensile stress. The total length of the different layers should be sufficient so that the tension in the fabric strip could be transferred to the backfill material. Also the total stability of reinforced earth wall should be checked with respect to a failure surface which extended blond the different lathers.

Various earth retaining wall methods were used on the domestic construction sites and a cast in place pile (C.I.P) method was mostly applied at deep excavation. Because of a lot of shortcomings in the C.I.P method, a new method using PHC-W earth retaining wall was developed. The earth retaining wall method using PHC-W piles has a lot of advantages including that it is safer than other earth retaining wall methods due to uniform quality and high rigidity. PHC-W was designed to effectively resist lateral earth pressure by alternating cross section of PHC pile. And increment of bending moment and shear strength were verified through KS F 4306 tests, and were increased by 42% and 98% more than KS standards.
This study build finite element analysis (FEA) models describing the bending events of coiled tubing (CT) at the wellhead and trips into the hole, accurately provide the state of stress and strain while the CT is in service. The bending moment and axial force history curves are used as loads and boundary conditions in the diametrical growth models to ensure consistency with the actual working conditions in field operations. The simulation diametrical growth results in this study are more accurate and reasonable. Analysis the factors influencing fatigue and diametrical growth shows that the internal pressure has a first-order influence on fatigue, followed by the radius of the guide arch, reel and the CT diameter. As the number of trip cycles increase, fatigue damage, residual stress and strain cumulatively increase, until CT failure occurs. Significant residual stresses remain in the CT cross-section, and the CT exhibits a residual curvature, the initial residual bending configuration of CT under wellbore constraints, after running into the hole, is sinusoidal. The residual stresses and residual bending configuration significantly decrease the buckling load, making the buckling and buckling release of CT in the downhole an elastic-plastic process, exacerbating the helical lockup. The conclusions drawn in this study will improve CT models and contribute to the operational and economic success of CT services.
