State-of-Charge Balancing Control of a Battery Power Module for a Modularized Battery for Electric Vehicle

  • This paper proposes a State-of-Charge (SOC) balancing control of Battery Power Modules (BPMs) for a modularized battery for Electric Vehicles (EVs) without additional balancing circuits. The BPMs are substituted with the single converter in EVs located between the battery and the inverter. The BPM is composed of a two-phase interleaved boost converter with battery modules. The discharge current of each battery module can be controlled individually by using the BPM to achieve a balanced state as well as increased utilization of the battery capacity. Also, an SOC balancing method is proposed to reduce the equalization time, which satisfies the regulation of a constant DC-link voltage and a demand of the output power. The proposed system and the SOC balancing method are verified through simulation and experiment.

전기자동차 운행을 위한 태양광발전소 수요 예측 (Prediction of Demand for Photovoltaic Power Plants for Electric Vehicle Operation)

  • Currently, various policies regarding ecofriendly vehicles are being proposed to reduce carbon emissions. In this study, the required areas for charging electric vehicle (EV) batteries using electricity produced by photovoltaic (PV) power plants were estimated. First, approximately 2.4 million battery EVs, which represented 10% of the total number of vehicles, consume approximately 404 GWh. Second, the power required for charging batteries is approximately 0.3 GW, and the site area of the PV power plant is 4.62 ㎢, which accounts for 0.005% of the national territory. Third, from the available sites of buildings based on the region, Jeju alone consumes approximately 0.2%, while the rest of the region requires approximately 0.1%. Fourth, Seoul, which has the smallest available area of mountains and farmlands, utilizes 0.34% of the site for PV power plants, while the other parts of the region use less than 0.1%. The results of this study confirmed that the area of the PV power plant site for producing battery-charging power generated through the supply of EVs is very small. Therefore, it is desirable to analyze and implement more specific plans, such as efficient land use, forest damage minimization, and safe maintenance, to expand renewable energy, including PV power.

  • E-infrastructural economy for ICT Living-Labs is a need for economic and cultural changes in various types of cars in accordance with the supply of the electric car. Depending on the number of cases by analyzing the supply and demand of electric vehicles among Korea and Northern Europe countries. it was indirectly proved that it makes economic growth. The research design is analyzed with the data and how to respond quickly to focus on the possibility of potential changes to the infrastructure realization and commercialization of government enterprises or electric cars through the ICT Living-Labs in Nordic countries. The data indicates that the leading commercialization emphasize on the development of the electric economic convergence and scalability for electric vehicle. When It shows the time of the infrastructure as ICT Living-Labs being delayed, it lowered growth target results for the development of the electric car industry in the future. All this is from the reason of opening the E-convergence economy over time. It is required that Korea should prepare E-convergence economy. Public regional energy should be present through the consistent selection of development for energy linking E-economy and E-trans distribution. Korea needs to be many difficulties in building the E- infrastructure for ICT Living-Labs. Unlike the Northern Europe it is to prepare the active support of both government and business. The role of the government discovers that the power generation through the quick selection of the industry, as well as to connect with the growth of the smart cities with the EVs industry.

A Study on EV Charging Scheme Using Load Control

  • It is necessary to charge electric vehicles in order to drive them. Thus, it is essential to have electric vehicle charging facilities in place. In the case of a household battery charger, the power similar to that consumed by a household with a basic contract power of 3kW is consumed. In addition, many consumers who own an electric vehicle will charge their vehicles at the same time. The simultaneous charging of electric vehicles will cause the load to increase, which then will lead to the imbalance of supply and demand in the distribution system. Thus, a smart charging scheme for electric vehicles is an essential element. In this paper, simulated conditions were set up using real data relating to Korea in order to design a smart charging technique suitable for the actual situation. The simulated conditions were used to present a smart charging technique for electric vehicles that disperses electric vehicles being charged simultaneously. The EVs and Smart Charging Technique are modeled using the Electro Magnetic Transients Program (EMTP).

The Role of Innovative Energy Public Firms' Channels according to Shale Gas for E-Convergence Economy.

  • Purpose - The E-convergence economy is requested with the economic change of the diverse energy supplies, according to the exploits of Shale gas. By analyzing the electric energy supply and demand in accordance with the various cases, it has proved indirectly to create a convergence economy. Research design, data, and methodology - The research design would make realize its potential change with which government or companies have focused on the energy objection between Shale gas and Electric vehicles. Results - The paper suggests that Shale gas has expanded with the emphasis on the Electrical convergence economy or EVs. Due to these results, they also show why it should not be delayed in the development of shale gas and electric vehicles at the same time. Conclusions - All this is from the reason of opening the E-convergence economy over time. It is required that Korea should prepare E-convergence economy.   • The rapidly growing demand for electric power systems in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) require simpler, cost-effective, and higher performance components. In this paper, a novel power conversion system for hybrid electric vehicles is proposed for these needs. The proposed power conversion system reduces the conversion system cost while preserving same functionality. The proposed power conversion system can boost multi-sources to drive a traction motor and to store energy at the same time reducing number of switching components. In this paper, all operational modes of the proposed converter are explained in detail and verified by a computer simulation first. Then, the topology and operational modes are experimentally verified. Based on the results, the feasibility of the proposed multi-mode single leg power conversion system for EV and HEV applications is discussed.

  • Recently, the demand for fuel efficient electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) has been growing globally. Due to the increased number of switching devices in the electrified vehicles, the probability of the semiconductor device failure is much higher than in other application areas. A sudden failure in one of the power switches and insufficient power management ability in the systems not only decreases system performance, but also leads to critical safety problems. In this paper, novel switch open circuit fault detection method is proposed, and the proposed approach is verified by experiments.

Stochastic Integrated Generation and Transmission Planning Incorporating Electric Vehicle Deployment

  • The power industry is currently facing many challenges, due to the new environment created by the introduction of smart grid technologies. In particular, the large-scale deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) may have a significant impact on demand for electricity and, thereby, influence generation and transmission system planning. However, it is difficult to deal with uncertainties in EV charging loads using deterministic planning methods. This paper presents a two-stage stochastic decomposition method with Latin-hyper rectangle sampling (LHRS) to solve the integrated generation and transmission planning problem incorporating EV deployment. The probabilistic distribution of EV charging loads is estimated by Latin-hyper rectangle sampling (LHRS) to enhance the computational performance of the proposed method. Numerical results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Conversion-Alloying Anode Materials for Na-ion Batteries: Recent Progress, Challenges, and Perspective for the Future

  • Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been rapidly expanding from IT based applications to uses in electric vehicles (EVs), smart grids, and energy storage systems (ESSs), all of which require low cost, high energy density and high power density. The increasing demand for LIBs has resulted in increasing price of the lithium source, which is a major obstacle to wider application. To date, the possible depletion of lithium resources has become relevant, giving rise to the interest in Na-ion batteries (NIBs) as promising alternatives to LIBs. A lot of transition metal compounds based on conversion-alloying reaction have been extensively investigated to meet the requirement for the anodes with high energy density and long life-time. In-depth understanding the electrochemical reaction mechanisms for the transition metal compounds makes it promising negative anode for NIBs and provides feasible strategy for low cost and large-scale energy storage system in the near future.

  • 청정에너지에 대한 수요가 증가함에 따라 리튬이온배터리의 소비가 꾸준히 늘어날 것으로 예상된다. 따라서 전세계적으로 리튬의 안정적 공급이 중요한 문제가 되고 있다. 저품위 광석, 점토, 해수 그리고 폐리튬이온배터리 등과 같은 다양한 자원으로부터 리튬의 회수를 위한 공정과 기술들이 개발되어져 왔지만, 대부분의 리튬은 간수와 스포듀민 광석으로부터 상업적으로 생산되고 있다. 특히, 휴대폰과 전기자동차(EVs)를 포함한 여러 분야에서 발생하고 있는 사용 후 리튬이온배터리에 대한 재활용 기술들의 상용화는 많은 잠재력을 가지고 있다. 본 고찰은 폐리튬이온배터리에 대하여 새롭게 개발된 리튬 회수 공정과 더불어 광물과 간수를 이용하기 위한 상용공정 및 최신 기술들을 소개한다. 아울러 미래의 리튬 공급이 기술적인 관점에서 논의된다. 저품위 광석으로부터 리튬 회수를 위하여 개발되고 있는 최신공정들은 주로 건식+습식 제련에 기반을 둔 접근방법에 초점을 두고 있으며, 단지 몇몇 방법들만이 안정화 되었다. 리튬이온배터리의 소비(현재 생산되는 리튬의 56%)에 비교하여 리튬의 낮은 재활용율(1% 미만) 때문에 2차 자원의 처리는 굉장한 기회로서 앞을 내다보는 것일 수 있다. 또한 탄소경제, 환경과 에너지에 대한 우려를 생각해 볼 때, 습식제련공정이 이러한 이슈를 해결할 수 있을 것이다.
