Pheromone Biosynthesis Activating Neuropeptide (PBAN) in Insects (곤충의 페로몬 생합성 활성화 신경펩타이드(PBAN))

  • Neuropeptides produced in neurosecretory cells are the largest group of insect hormones. They regulate various physiological functions, such as fat body homeostasis, feeding, digestion, excretion, circulation, reproduction, metamorphosis, and behavior throughout all life stages. The PRXamide peptide family (X, a variable amino acid) is a well-characterized neuropeptide component with a common amino acid sequence, PRXamide (NH2), at the C-terminal end conserved across Insecta. The PRXamide peptides are classified into three subfamilies, each having diverse biological roles in insects: (1) pyrokinin (PK) includes the pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide (PBAN) and the diapause hormone (DH), (2) the capability (CAPA) peptides, and (3) the ecdysis-triggering hormone (ETH). PBAN as a member of PK subfamily was first identified to stimulate pheromone biosynthesis in moths three decades ago. Since then, PBAN peptides have been extensively studied by various research groups from a broad spectrum of arthropods. In this paper, we briefly review insect PBAN molecules with emphasis on gene structure and expression, signal transduction, physiological mechanism in sex pheromone biosynthesis, and application for pest management.

Feasibility of Natural Attenuation for TCE Anaerobic Reductive Dechlorination Using Microsized Corn-Oil Droplet as an Activator (Microsized Corn-Oil Droplet (MOD)의 Trichloroethylene (TCE) 생물학적 탈염소화 분해 자연저감 완효성 촉진제 적용성 평가)

  • Recently, enhanced in situ bioremediation using slow substrate release techniques has been actively researched for managing TCE-contaminated groundwater. This study conducted a lab-scale batch reactor experiment to evaluate the feasibility of natural attenuation for TCE dechlorination using microsized corn-oil droplet (MOD) as an activator considering the following three factors: 1) TCE dechlorination in the presence or absence of MOD; 2) TCE dechlorination in the presence or absence of inactivator of native microbial activity; and 3) MOD concentration effects on TCE dechlorination. Batch reactors were constructed using site groundwater and soil in which Dehalococcoides bacteria were present. Without MOD, TCE was decomposed into dichloroethylene (DCE). However, other by-products of TCE dechlorination were not detected. With MOD, DCE, vinyl chloride (VC), and ethylene (ETH) were sequentially observed. This result confirmed that MOD effectively supplied electrons to complete dechlorination of TCE to ETH. However, when an excess of MOD was provided, it formed unfavorable conditions for anaerobic digestion because dechlorination reaction did not proceed while propionic acid was accumulated after DCE was generated. Therefore, if an appropriate amount of MOD is supplied, MOD can be effectively used as a natural reduction activator to promote biodegradation in an aquifer contaminated by TCE.

Effects of Phenolic Compounds of Persimmon Leaves on Antioxidative System and Miscellaneous Enzyme Activities Related to Liver Function in Ethanol-Induced Hepatotoxicity of Rats (감잎의 Phenolic Compounds가 에탄올을 투여한 흰쥐의 항산화계 및 기타 효소활성에 미치는 영향)

  • To investigate antioxidative effects of phenolic compounds separated from persimmon leaves(PL)(Diospyros kaki Thunb.) on the ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity in rat, Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 100-150 g were divided into 5 groups; control group(CON), PL(70 mg/kg) administered group(PEl), ethanol(5 mL/kg, 25%) administered group(ETH), PL(70 mg/kg) and ethanol administered group (PE2), and PL(140 mg/kg) and ethanol administered group(PE3), respectively. The antioxidative activity of persimmon leaves decreased in order of ethylacetate>interphase materials>n-butanol>chloroform>n-hexane>water fraction. The growth rate and feed efficiency ratio decreased by ethanol were gradually increased to the adjacent level of CON by administering PL. The serum activities of ALT, alkaline phosphatase and lactic acid dehydrogenase elevated by ethanol were decreased significantly. It was also observed that the activities of SOD, catalase, and GSH-Px of rat liver increased by ethanol were markedly decreased in PL administered group as compared to ETH. The GSH content of liver was decreased by ethanol, but that was increased in PE1 and PE2 compared with ETH as a dose-dependant manner. These results suggested that phenolic compounds separated from persimmon leaves have a possible protective and relievable effect on the ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity in rats.

Herbs and Botanicals as Feed Additives in Monogastric Animals

  • Animal feed additives are used worldwide for many different reasons. Some help to cover the needs of essential nutrients and others to increase growth performance, feed intake and therefore optimize feed utilization. The health status of animals with a high growth performance is a predominant argument in the choice of feed additives. The use of feed additives is more and more questioned by the consumers. Therefore, the feed industry is highly interested in valuable alternatives which could be accepted by the consumers. Probiotics, prebiotics, enzymes and highly available minerals as well as herbs can be seen as alternatives. Herbs, spices and their extracts (botanicals) have a wide range of activities. They can stimulate feed intake and endogenous secretions or have antimicrobial, coccidiostatic or anthelmintic activity. A major field of application of herbs is the protection of animals and their products against oxidation.

NONTHERMAL COMPONENTS IN THE LARGE SCALE STRUCTURE

  • I address the issue of nonthermal processes in the large scale structure of the universe. After reviewing the properties of cosmic shocks and their role as particle accelerators, I discuss the main observational results, from radio to $\gamma$-ray and describe the processes that are thought be responsible for the observed nonthermal emissions. Finally, I emphasize the important role of $\gamma$-ray astronomy for the progress in the field. Non detections at these photon energies have already allowed us important conclusions. Future observations will tell us more about the physics of the intracluster medium, shocks dissipation and CR acceleration.

Parmeter Optimization for Calculation of Proton Chemical Shift in Protein

  • The magnetic anisotropy effects of peptide group in structured protein on proton chemical shift have been investigated using trialanine modeling. The structure dependent part of chemical shift of C${\alpha}$H of the second amino acid residue was assumed to come purely from the magnetic anisotropy effects of C=O and C-N bonds of peptide in the direct neighborhood and thus to be dependent on and $\psi$ angle of this dipeptide. A set of dipeptide models with different and $\psi$angles were generated and from these models the chemical shift values were calculated using known algorithm to emphasize the role of parameters used in the equation. Comparison of sets of different parameters resulted in an optimized parameters which could reproduce the statistical chemical shift values observed in proteins with respect ot the secondary conformation.

Solution Structure of Bovine Pancreatic Trypsin Inhibitor using NMR Chemical Shift Restraints

  • The solution structure of bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor(BPTI) has been refined by NMR chemical shift data of C${\alpha}$H using classical molecular dynamics simulation. The structure dependent part of the observable chemical shift was modeled by ring current effect, magnetic anisotropy effect from the nearby groups, whereas the structure independent part was replaced with the random coil shift. A new harmonic function derived from the differences between the observed and calculated chemical shifts was added into physical force field as an pseudo potential energy term with force constant of 250 kJmol-1 ppm-2. During the 1.5 ns molecular dynamics simulation with chemical shift restraints BPTI has accessed different conformation space compared to crystal and NOE driven structure.

The Effect of Environmental Factors on Phage Stability and Infectivity on Their Host Bacteria: a Case Study for an Escherichia coli Phage (T7), a Listeria Phage (A511), and a Salmonella Phage (Felix O1)

  • The effectiveness of phage biocontrol depends on the activity of bacteriophage in a given environment. In order to investigate the infectivity and the stability of bacteriophages in representative environments, three virulent phages, Listeria phage A511, Salmonella phage Felix O1, and Escherichia coli phage T7, were subjected to different temperatures, pHs and salt concentrations (NaCl). Phage infectivity was also determined in the presence of divalent cations ($Mg^{2+}$ or $Ca^{2+}$). As a result, three phages exhibited a wide range of survival rates under various environments. Phage infectivity was directly correlated with bacterial growth under the applied conditions. One exception was Felix O1 that did not kill Salmonella grown in low pH (4.5). The failure was attributed to defective adsorption of Felix O1. This finding is significant as it provides an explanation for the inefficient phage biocontrol. Therefore, such information is crucial to improve phage biocontrol of pathogens.

  • Despite the fact that the phenomenal success of the classical model in phonology in terms of a small set of binary atomic primitives has encouraged the use of criterical features in the characterization of syntactic and semantic categories, cognitive linguists have recently found many evidences against it and proposed a valid alternative like prototype approach to classical model of linguistic categorization. In this paper the examples with prototype effects are shown in phonology, morphology, and syntax. In phonology there is no clear-cut borderline in initial sounds such as / r, m, n, v, ${\eth}$, z, w. j, b. d, g / and between vowels and consonants. In morphology family resemblance is shown between strong verbs and past tenses. In syntax there is no borderline among various kinds of sentences such as declarative, command, WH-question, yes-no question, etc.
