EPS의 압축성을 이용한 토압저감효과에 관한 연구 (Research on the Load Reduction Effect Using EPS)

  • 최근 30년간 EPS 블록은 전 세계적으로 그 사용량이 증가하고 있으며, 국내$.$외적으로 EPS 블록의 적용 분야가 확장되고 있는 추세에 있다. 그 대표적인 사례로 EPS 블록의 압축성에 따른 아칭효과를 이용한 옹벽, 교대, 매설관등 지반구조물에 작용하는 토압 저감 분야를 들 수 있다. EPS 블록은 경량성에 기인한 우수한 시공성과 밀도 변화에 따른 균질한 공학적 특성을 가지고 있으며, 또한 압축재로서 최적의 재료적 특성을 갖추고 있다. 일반적으로 EPS 블록은 밀도가 낮은 경우 동일한 하중 아래에서 보다 압축성이 우수한 경향을 보이나, 밀도가 10kg/$\textrm{m}^3$ 이하인 경우 발포 비드간 결합력이 약하여 쉽게 파괴되는 성질이 있으므로 지반공학적으로 이용할 때에는 10kg/$\textrm{m}^3$ 이상의 제품을 이용하는 것이 바람직한 것으로 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 지반구조물의 하중 저감을 위한 아칭재로서의 EPS 블록의 현장 적용성 평가를 위하여 콘크리트 옹벽과 콘크리트 박스 암거를 대상으로 현장시험시공을 수행하였으며, 현장시험시공 결과 아칭재인 EPS 블록을 사용할 경우 기존의 이론적인 토압에 비하여 콘크리트 옹벽의 경우 약 20% 정도, 콘크리트 박스 암거의 경우 약 45∼53% 정도인 것으로 평가되었다.

  • Thermal insulation performance of new insulation packaging made of recycled PET nonwoven (thickness : 10 mm) was verified by conducting comparative experiment with an EPS box (thickness : 25 mm) and a double wall corrugated box (thickness : 7 mm). Three ice packs (300 g) were positioned 200 mm above the bottom inside each box, all of which are placed side by side and temperature change of 2 points (5mm under middle icepack and 130 mm under middle icepack) was recorded by data logger (GL-840, Graphtec) for 16 hours under the environment of 29℃. The new packaging box showed 75% higher insulation performance than the EPS box and 180% higher than the corrugated box. In order to figure out the reason for insulation performance difference among boxes, thermal conductivities of each box material were measured using heat flow meter (HFM436 lamda, Netzsch). U-value (thermal conductivity divided by thickness) of EPS was lower than recycled pet nonwoven by 57%, which seemed to be opposite to the result of insulation test of boxes. This was explained by high water vapor transmission rate of EPS (6 times higher than PET insulation) and air pocket effect of PET insulation.

  • A marine microorganism, strain 96CJ10356 produced exopolysaccharide, designated as EPS-R. To optimize culmize culture conditions for the production of EPS-R, carbon and nitrogen sources, mineral salts, temperature, and pH were exmined. From this study, STN medium for the production of EPS-R was suggested as follows; sucrose 20g, typtone 10g, NaCl 10g, MgSO45g, CaCl21g, KH2PO4 76mg, K2HPO4 83mg, FeCl2 5mg, MnCl2 1mg, NaMoO4 1mg, and ZnCl2 1mg per liter at pH 7.0. About 9.23g/L of EPS-R was obtained from STN medium after cultivation for 120h at $25^{\circ}C$ in a 5-liter jar fermentor with an aearation rate of 0.17 vvm. Apparent viscosity and flocculation activity of the culture broth were increased with the production of EPS-R and the maximal values were 415 cP and 1400 unit/mL against 0.5% activated carbon, respectively.

신선식품용 재사용 EPE박스와 EPS박스에 대한 전과정 환경영향평가 (Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of Reusable and Disposable Distribution Packaging for Fresh Food)

  • In this study, we conducted a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) of two different products, considering reusable and single-use packaging for fresh food distribution. For reusable packaging, we utilized expanded polyethylene (EPE), while for comparison, a disposable box made of widely used expanded polystyrene (EPS) was selected. We comprehensively analyzed the environmental impacts of production, transportation, reprocessing (for reused boxes), and disposal across 18 impact categories. Upon analyzing the actual reuse of 300 rounds of fresh food, the cumulative global warming potential (GWP) values for the EPE box were found to be 280.21 kg carbon dioxide (CO2) eq, demonstrating a significant 75% reduction compared to those of the EPS box. Furthermore, it was observed that the GWP values for the EPE boxes became equivalent to those of the EPS boxes after 12 rounds of reuse. In conclusion, reusable packaging shows substantial potential to contribute to the reduction of environmental burdens, aligning well with global environmental requirements for sustainable food distribution and related industries.

  • The effects of packaging conditions on freshness extension of cucumber were investigated during 24-day storage temperatures $18^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$. The storage life of cucumbers was influenced by both packaging methods (corrugated cardboard vs EPS box) and temperatures during storage. The fresh weigh, vitamin C content and Chlorophyll of cucumbers were decreased, while yellowing of cucumber peel was increased during storage. The change of vitamin C content was influenced by both packaging method and temperature during storage. The EPS box and low temperature were revealed to be effective treatments to extend the storability or cucumber fruit.

한국과 유럽의 신선식품용 EPS박스에 대한 전과정 환경영향평가 (Environmental Impact Assessment of EPS Box for Fresh Food in Korea and Europe)

  • Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is the most commonly used fresh food refrigeration insulation in Korea and Europe. Moreover, as the use of disposable packaging materials has increased significantly along with non-face-to-face delivery services since the COVID-19 crisis, social issues related to waste disposal are also being raised. Therefore, in this study, the life cycle of EPS boxes for fresh food is focused on the factors that have a large difference between incineration and landfill including recycling in Europe and Korea in the disposal process after use, and raw materials and energy in the manufacturing process, which account for a large portion of the environmental impact value. We tried to compare the environmental impact of evaluation. Overall, the raw material production stage, box manufacturing stage, and packaging stage have similar processes in Europe and Korea, but unlike Europe, Korea, which lacks landfills and incineration facilities, has focused on expanding the recycling rate. It was necessary to do an environmental impact assessment. Data affecting the environment were derived based on 2019 and 2020 data for Korea and 2017 and 2020 data for Europe. In order to predict the future environmental impact assessment, assumptions about the disposal rate in 2025 and 2030 were introduced and evaluated. As a result of this study, it was found that the raw material production stage of EPS boxes, which have similar processes in both Korea and Europe, has the greatest effect on the global warming effect of Korean EPS boxes. However, Korea, which has a relatively high recycling rate in the disposal process compared to incineration and landfill, showed better environmental performance than Europe in most impact indicators except freshwater eutrophication. In particular, Korea has increased the overall recycling rate compared to Europe by replacing various recyclable materials such as building materials and sundries with XPS (extruded polystyrene) recycled materials. In conclusion, it was found that increasing the recycling rate rather than incinerating and landfilling EPS boxes for fresh food in the domestic EPS industry has relatively less environmental load compared to Europe.

뒷채움 시공시의 다짐토압 특성 (Characteristics of Developed Earth Pressure by Backfill Compaction)

  • 콘크리트 구조물과 토공의 인접부인 구조물 뒷채움의 구조적 연속성을 위해서는 뒷채움 시공이 중요하다. 뒷채움부의 구조적 연속성을 증가시키기 위해서는 양질의 뒷채움재 사용과 대형 진동다짐장비에 의한 정밀다짐이 효과적이다. 그러나 정밀다짐시에 발생하는 과도한 토압에 의해 암거 구조물에 구조적 결함이 발생할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 다짐재와 다짐방법을 변화시키면서 2개소의 암거를 건설하였다. 뒷채움재로는 선택층재와 노상토재를 사용하였다. 뒷채움 다짐시에 큰 다짐에너지를 얻기 위하여 대부분의 경우 총중량 11~12톤의 다짐롤러를 2000rpm 에서 2400rpm의 주파수로 적용하였다. 노상토를 사용하여 뒷채움 시공을 하는 경우에는 충격완화재를 설치하여 동적 수평하중에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 충격완화재로는 EPS재와 타이어 칩을 사용한 패널들을 사용하였으며, 뒷채움 시공시에 이들 충격완화재를 암거의 외벽체에 부탁하였다. 본 논문에서는 콘크리트 암거의 뒷채움 시공시에 발생하는 동적지응력 특성을 기술하였다. 계측 결과, 다짐하중에 의한 수직토압과 수평토압의 크기는 다짐재료, 다짐 측정깊이 및 다짐방법에 의존하고 있었다. 뒷채움 다짐시에는 정적토압계수 보다 큰 동적토압계수$(\DeltaK_{dyn}=\DeltaK\sigma_h\DeltaK\sigma_v)$를 나타내고 있어 동적토압에 의해 암거에 유해한 영향을 줄 수 있다. 충격완화재 EPS(t=10cm)와 고무계(t=5cm)는 암거 벽체에 작용하는 동적 수평토압을 경감시키는데 효과적인 것을 알았다.

콘크리트 암거에서의 뒷채움 다짐에 의한 동적토압 (Dynamic Earth Pressure of Concrete Culverts During Compaction of Backfill)

  • It is important to pay careful attention to construction backfill for the structural integrity of concrete box culvert. The stability of the surrounding soil is important to the structural performance of most culverts. Good compaction by the dynamic compaction roller with big capacity is as effective as good backfill materials to increase the structural integrity of culvert. However structural distress of the culvert could be occur due to the excessive earth pressure by dynamic compaction load. In this study, 16 box culverts were constructed with various compaction materials and construction methods. Three types of on-site soils such as subbase, subgrade and roadbed materials were used as backfill materials in the test program. Compaction methods were adapted based on the site conditions. In most cases, dynamic compaction rollers with 10 to 16 ton weights were used and vibration speed were applied from 2400 to 2500 rpm for the great compaction energy. Some backfill compactions with good quality soils were carried out to examine the effect of EPS(Expanded Polystyrene) panels with changes of compaction thickness. This paper presents the main results of the research conducted to access the engineering performance of the backfill materials. The characteristics of earth pressures are discussed. It is observed that subgrade and roadbed materials are needed more careful compaction than subbase materials. It is shown that EPS panels are effective to mitigate dynamic lateral earth pressure on the culverts. It is also obtained that the dynamic pressure depends on the soil properties. In addition, the coefficient of dynamic earth pressure (K$\sub$dyn/=ΔP$\sub$H/ ΔP$\sub$V/) during compaction is discussed.

  • 콘크리트 암거와 같은 지중구조물의 뒷채움시에 부등침하를 줄이기 위해서는 양질의 뒷채움 재료사용과 대형진동 다짐장비를 이용한 정밀한 다짐을 실시하는 것이 중요하다. 또한 효과적인 정밀 다짐은 진동 롤러의 강한 진동을 함께 구조물부에 근접하여 다지는 것이 필요하다. 그러나, 이와 같은 다짐방법은 과도한 충격하중 발생으로 구조물의 벽체균열 발생을 유발할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 콘크리트 암거의 뒷채움 시공을 위하여 충격완화재의 종류와 다짐방법을 변화하여 다짐시의 구조물에 발생하는 다짐토압을 현장계측을 통하여 분석하였다. 타이어칩과 발포 폴리 스틸렌을 사용한 패널들을 뒷채움 다짐시공전 암거 벽면에 부착하였다. 충격완화재 Type A(Rubber)와 Type B(EPS)의 성능 비교를 위한 실내시험 결과 Type A는 Type B보다 작은 탄성계수와 큰 재료감쇠를 가지고 있어 보다 큰 충격완화효과를 기대할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 다짐장비는 대부분 큰 다짐에너지를 위하여 고주파수인 30Hz를 적용하였다. 현장계측 결과로부터 다짐하중에 의한 동적 수평토압의 크기는 다짐장비의 가진여부, 측정깊이, 다짐장비 이격거리 및 다짐방향에 의존하고 있었다. 암거의 동적 수평토압 측정결과로부터 롤러 다짐장비를 콘크리트 구조물에 직각방향으로 다짐작업을 실시하는 것이 수평방향으로 다짐하는 것 보다 다짐효과를 증가하는 것으로 나타났다.

  • ISO 13784-1 sandwich panel tests were conducted by FILK, KICT in Korea and SP in Sweden. Sandwich panels composed of steel sheets, EPS and glass wool supplied by FILK were tested. And in parallel, the same materials were tested using ISO TS17431 model box tests at GBRC and TUS in Japan.
