Liquid Crystal Aligning Capabilities on the Photopolymer Based Maleimide (Maleimide계 폴리머를 이용한 액정배향특성)

  • A new photoalignment material PMI5CA, poly{N-(phenyl)maleimide-co-3-[4-(pentyloxy) cinnamate]propyl-2-hydroxy-1-methacrylate}, was synthesized and the electra-optical (EO) characteristics in the vertical-aligned (VA) liquid crystal display (LCD) photo-aligned on the photopolymer surface were studied. Excellent voltage-transmittance(V-T) characteristics in the VA-LCD photoaligned with polarized UV exposure of oblique direction on the pohotopolymer surfaces for 1 min can be achieved. The transmittance of the VA-LCD photoaligned on the photopolymer surface decreased with increasing UV exposure time. We suggest that the decrease of transmittance in the VA-LCD photoaligned on the photopolymer surface is attributed to the dissociation of the ester linkage in the photodimerized cinnamate structure with increasing UV exposure time

Electro-optical Characteristics of Twisted Nematic(TN)-LCD using New Ion Beam Equipment (새로운 이온빔장치를 사용한 Twisted Nematic-LCD의 전기광학특성)

  • We studied liquid crystal (LC) alignment with ion beam (IB) on polyimide and electro-optical characteristics of twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) on the polyimide surface using obliquely ion beam (IB) exposure with new IB type equipment. A good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure on the polyimide surface was observed. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on polyimide surface. Also, the EO characteristics of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on a polyimide (PI) surface with ion beam exposure using new type IB equipment is same or more superior than ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on a polyimide (PI) surface with ion beam exposure using Kaufman-type Ar ion gun.

  • There are various types of explosives, and each explosive has different characteristics such as water resistance, energy required for detonation, and crushing power, so understanding the characteristics of explosives is important for safe use and performance improvement. Computer simulation is used indirectly along with various experiments to understand the characteristics of explosives, and a state equation is used to express the explosive detonation process through computer simulation. In this study, the explanation of JWL EOS, which is mainly used among the state equations of explosives, and the cylinder expansion experiment to calculate the coefficient of JWL EOS were implemented as ANSYS AUTODYN and compared and analyzed with the actual experimental results. As a result, an error rate of around 20% occurred, and it was found that the overall change pattern of pressure and energy was consistent with the previously published experimental results.

  • Assembly of hybrid mesophases through the combination of amphiphilic block copolymers, acting as structuredirecting agents, and silicon sources using low acid catalyst concentration regimes is a versatile strategy to produce large quantities of high-quality ordered large-pore mesoporous silicas in a very reproducible manner. Controlling structural and textural properties is proven to be straightforward at low HCl concentrations with the adjustment of synthesis gel composition and the option of adding co-structure-directing molecules. In this account, we illustrate how various types of large-pore mesoporous silica can easily be prepared in high phase purity with tailored pore dimensions and tailored level of framework interconnectivity. Silica mesophases with two-dimensional hexagonal (p6mm) and three-dimensional cubi (Fm$\overline{3}$m, Im$\overline{3}$m and Ia$\overline{3}$d) symmetries are generated in aqueous solution by employing HCl concentrations in the range of 0.1−0.5 M and polyalkylene oxide-based triblock copolymers such as Pluronic P123 $(EO_{20}-PO_{70}-EO_{20})$ and Pluronic F127 $(EO_{106}-PO_{70}-EO_{106})$. Characterizations by powder X-ray diffraction, nitrogen physisorption, and transmission electron microscopy show that the mesoporous materials all possess high specific surface areas, high pore volumes and readily tunable pore diameters in narrow distribution of sizes ranging from 4 to 12 nm. Furthermore, we discuss our recent advances achieved in order to extend widely the phase domains in which single mesostructures are formed. Emphasis is put on the first synthetic product phase diagrams obtained in $SiO_2$-triblock copolymer-BuOH-$H_2O$ systems, with tuning amounts of butanol and silica source correspondingly. It is expected that the extended phase domains will allow designed synthesis of mesoporous silicas with targeted characteristics, offering vast prospects for future applications.

The Effects of Curl-up Exercise using XCO on Trunk Muscle Activation in Healthy Adults

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of curl-up using XCO® on trunk muscle activation in healthy adults. Methods: This study design was a single-blind randomized controlled trial. Twelve participants were enrolled in this study. The subjects were instructed to perform curl-up exercise in STCU (straight curl-up), LTCU (left twist curl-up), RTCU (right twist curl-up), TWCU (twist curl-up), and PPCU (power push curl-up). Electromyography was used to assess the percent maximal voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC) of the rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (EO), internal oblique (IO), and erector spinae (ES) muscles. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA with a repeated measure. The statistical significance level was set to α=0.05 Results: The IO showed significant differences in the main effect of the group and the interactions between the group and exercise (p<0.05). In particular, the IO represented the interactions between group and exercise in the RTCU and PPCU (p<0.05). The RA, EO, and ES did not show significant interactions between the group and exercise (p>0.05). The RA, IO, and EO showed significant differences in the main effect of the group (p<0.05). The EO showed a significant difference in the main effect of exercise (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that XCO® can be used to increase the muscle activation of the internal oblique, which is the lumbar stabilizing muscle, when XCO® is combined in the curl-up exercise with rotation. In the future, research on the intensity, frequency, and duration of XCO® exercise will be needed according to the individual characteristics and preferences.

Size Effect of Concrete Compressive Strength Considering Dried Unit Weight of Concrete (콘크리트의 기건단위질량을 고려한 콘크리트 압축강도의 크기효과)

  • Since the size effect law announced currently has been based on the normal weight concrete, for light weight concrete having different fracture characteristics, its application is questionable. Accordingly, in this study, a model equation to predict the effect of dried unit weight of the concrete on size effect of its compressive strength was developed and a database using existing research results was created. After determining the experimental constants of prediction models of Ba${\check{z}}$ant based on nonlinear fracture mechanics, Kim and Eo, and this study using the database, their results are mutually compared. Finally, it was found that the prediction model of this study considered dried unit weight of concrete predicted well the test results for light weight concrete than that of the models of Ba${\check{z}}$ant and Kim and Eo.

  • Photoreflectance (PR) measurents have been performed on $In_xGa_{1-x}As/GaAs$ grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Bandgap $(E_0)$ of $In_xGa_{1-x}As$ epilayer measured from PR was separated as heavy-hole $(E_0(HH))$ and light-hole $(E_0(LH))$ by strain effect. The compositions and the strains of epilayer were obtained from the energy value of $E_0(HH)$ and from energy difference of $E_0(HH)$ and $E_0(LH)$, respectively. In addition, the PR signal of $E_0(LH)$ was diminished below 160 K. The interface electric field (E) of InGaAs/GaAs was increased from $0.75{\times}10^5$ V/cm to $2.66{\times}10^5$ V/cm as In composition increased, which was calculated from Franz-Keldysh oscillation (FKO) peaks. As the temperature dependence of the PR signal at x=0.09 sample, we obtained Varshni and Bose-Einstein coefficients.

Review of the Scientific Name for Two Species of Genus Pampus (Stromateidae) in Korea (한국산 병어속(병어과) 어류 2종의 학명 검토)

  • This study compared the morphological and molecular characteristics of the two Pampus spp. in Korea, Japan and China to clarify the long-confused taxonomic status of the two Korean pomfrets named as "Byeong-eo" and "Deok-dae". Among them "Byeong-eo" was identified as Pampus punctatissimus in having the following morphological traits: patch of wavy ridges extending beyond the anterior tip of the pectoral fin, the groove on the lower ridge of gill cover absent, and the number of vertebrae 34. On the other hand, "Deok-dae" was identified as Pampus argenteus in having the following morphological traits: patch of wavy ridges not reaching to the anterior tip of the pectoral fin, the groove on the lower ridge of gill cover reaching to the lower jaw, and the number of vertebrae 38~42. In addition, "Byeong-eo" almost corresponded to P. punctatissimus from Japan in the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences (genetic distance=0.1%), while "Deokdae" showed genetic distance of 0.3% when compared to P. argenteus from China. Our comprehensive results suggest the validify of P. punctatissimus for "Byeong-eo", and P. argenteus for "Deok-dae".

Utilization of End-of-Life Care Rooms by Patients Who Died in a Single Hospice Unit at a National University Hospital in South Korea

  • Purpose: For the dignity of patients nearing the end of their lives, it is essential to provide end-of-life (EoL) care in a separate, dedicated space. This study investigated the utilization of specialized rooms for dying patients within a hospice unit. Methods: This retrospective study examined patients who died in a single hospice unit between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2021. Utilizing medical records, we analyzed the circumstances surrounding death, the employment of specialized rooms for terminally ill patients, and the characteristics of those who received EoL care in a shared room. Results: During the 1,825-day survey period, deaths occurred on 632 days, and 799 patients died. Of these patients, 496 (62.1%) received EoL care in a dedicated room. The average duration of using this dedicated space was 1.08 days. Meanwhile, 188 patients (23.5%) died in a shared room. Logistic regression analysis revealed that a longer stay in the hospice unit was associated with a lower risk of receiving EoL care in a shared room (odds ratio [OR]=0.98, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.97~0.99; P=0.002). Furthermore, a higher number of deaths on the day a patient died was associated with a greater risk of receiving EoL care in a shared room (OR=1.66, 95% CI 1.33~2.08; P<0.001). Conclusion: To ensure that more patients receive EoL care for an adequate duration in a private setting, additional research is necessary to increase the number of dedicated rooms and incorporate them into the hospice unit at an early stage.

Lithium ion Transport Characteristics of Gel-Type Polymer Electrolytes Containing Lithium p-[Methoxyoligo(ethyleneoxy)] benzenesulfonates (리튬 p-[메톡시 올리고(에틸렌옥시)]벤젠설폰산염으로 제조된 젤형 고분자 전해질의 리튬 이온 운반 특성)

  • Lithium p-[Methoxyoligo(ethyleneoxy)] benzenesulfonates (LiEOnBS) with different repeating unit of ethylene oxide were synthesized and were used for preparing gel-polymer electrolytes. The conductivities and lithium ion transference number were measured as a function of Li-salt concentration and repeating unit of ethylene oxide of the LiEOnBS. The maximum conductivity of the resulting gel-polymer electrolyte was found to be 4.89${\times}$10$\^$-4/ S/cm (LiEO7.3BS, 0.5 M) at 30$^{\circ}C$. The lithium ion transference number (t$\sub$Li$\sub$+//) measurement were performed by means of the combination do polarization and ac impedance methods in gel-polymer electrolytes. Lithium ion transference number was measured to be in the range of 0.75∼0.92 for the LiEOnBS containing gel-polymer electrolytes. The maximum t$\sub$Li$\sub$+// was obtained to be 0.92 for the 0.1 M LiEOnBS containing polymer electrolytes. The synthesized LiEOnBS showed single ion transport like characteristics when n was large than 3.
