  • The connecting rod bearing, which is subjected to periodical dynamic loading, is an impoRant component of the reciprocating engine. In the operation of this bearing, significant parameters are the oil film thickness and the film pressure. Peak film pressures of 20-30 MPa are not uncommon. So the elastic deformation of the bearing housing can have a significant effect on the bearing performance. In this study, a numerical analysis of connecting rod bearing is investigated. Elastic deformation of the bearing housing is considered in the analysis. Separate hydrodynamic and structural analysis are coupled through a direct iterative process. It is shown that as the result of the elastic deformation of the bearing housing, the eccentricity ratio is increased, and the minimum value of the minimum film thickness and the maximum value of the maximum film pressure are decreased. The variations of rotational speed and cylinder pressure affect the minimum film thickness and the maximum film pressure variations of the connecting rod bearing.

  • In this study, the simulation of rolling contact fatigue based on stress analysis is conducted under Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication state. To predict a crack initiation life accurately, it is necessary to calculate contact stress and subsurface stresses accurately. Contact stresses are obtained by contact analysis of a semi-infinile solid based on the use of influence functions and the subsurface stress field is obtained using rectangular patch solutions. And a numerical algorithm using Newton-Rapson method was constructed to calculate the Elastohydrodynamic lubrication pressure. Based on these stress values, several multiaxial high-cycle fatigue criteria are used and the critical loads corresponding to fatigue limits are calculated.

  • This paper presents a high-speed performance analysis of ball bearings with ceramic balls under thrust loads. The sliding velocity profiles between a ball and raceways were obtained by the 3-D quasi-dynamic equations of motion including both centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment derived by vector matrix algebra. The friction at the contact areas was obtained by the Bair-Winer's non-Newtonian rheological model and the Hamrock-Dowson's central film thickness in EHL analysis. The nonlinear equations were solved by the Newton-Raphson method and the underrelaxation iterative method. The friction torques and ball behaviors with various loads, ball materials, and contact angles were predicted by this model. It was shown that the friction torque was sensitive to thrust load and contact angle, and that the friction torque and the pitch angle of the bearing with ceramic balls are smaller than those of the bearing with steel balls.

  • This paper presents a study of the elastohydrodynamic lubrication of elliptical contacts where lubricant entrainment coincides with the major axis of the Hertzian contact ellipse. A finite difference method and the Newton-Raphson method are applied to analyze the problem. Film contours and pressure distributions are compared with the results for lubricant entrainment coincides with the minor axis. Variations of the minimum and central film thicknesses with the radius ratio are also examined. Therefore, the present numerical scheme can be used generally in the analysis of the EHL of elliptical contacts where the lubricant entraining vector did not coincide with either of the principal axis of the conjunction.

  • The numerical analysis of elastohydrodynamic lubrication for the ball and roller bearings is performed in order to study the effect of the number of rolling elements and the shaft load on the minimum film thickness. A finite difference method and the Newton-Raphson method are used in the analysis. For a given shaft load, the maximum load of rolling element is determined along with the number of rolling elements. And then the minimum film thickness is calculated for several rolling bearings. The shape of film thickness and the pressure distribution are also studied.

  • A numerical analysis of elastohydrodynamic lubrication of elliptical contacts with both rolling and spinning has been carried out. A finite difference method with non-uniform grid systems and the Newton-Raphson method are applied to solve the problems. The velocity vectors resulting from combined spinning and rolling/sliding motion lead to asymmetric pressure distributions and film shapes. Pressure distributions, film contours and variations of the minimum and central film thicknesses are compared with various spin-roll ratios. Reduction of the minimum film thickness under spinning is remarkable whereas the central film thickness is relatively less. The spin motion have large effect on variations of the minimum film thickness with load parameter which are small in pure rolling/sliding cases. Therefore present numerical scheme can be used in the analysis of general elliptical contact EHL problems and further studies are required.

  • A new numerical solution of the elastohydrodynamic lubrication(EHL) problem of an axially profiled cylindrical roller is presented. A finite difference method and the Newton-Raphson method are used to solve the nonlinear system equations. A non-uniform grid system is adopted to reduce the number of grid points and to obtain accurate solution. For two different types of profiles which have similar elastostatic pressure distribution, the EHL results show large differences. Especially the difference in film shape is larger than in pressure distribution. Therefore, the magnitude of the minimum film thickness should be a major criteria to design the axial profile of the roller. Variations of the minimum film thickness with dimensionless parameters show considerably different behavior from those of infinite solution and show a good agreement with the experimental data in literatures. Present numerical scheme can be used generally in the analysis of three-dimensional EHL problem.

  • Point contact film thickness in elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) is analyzed by image processing method for the images from an optical interferometer with monochromatic incident light. Interference between the reflected lights both on half mirror Cr coating of glass disk and on super finished ball makes circular fringes depending on the contact conditions such as sliding velocity, applied load, viscosity-pressure characteristics and viscosity of lubricant under ambient pressure. In this situation the film thickness is regarded as the difference of optical paths between those reflected lights, which make dark and bright fringes with monochromatic incident light. The film thickness is computed by numbering the dark and bright fringe orders and the intensity (gray scale image) in each fringe regime is mapped to the corresponding film thickness. In this work, we developed a measuring technique for EHL film thickness by dividing the image patterns into two typical types under the condition of monochromatic incident light. During the image processing, the captured image is converted into digitally formatted data over the contact area without any loss of the image information of interferogram and it is also interpreted with consistency regardless of the observer's experimental experience. It is expected that the developed image processing method will provide a valuable basis to develop the image processing technique for color fringes, which is generally used for the measurement of relatively thin films in higher resolution.

  • Tapered roller bearings are widely used in high axial-load and radial-load applications. In this study, a numerical analysis is performed to study a finite line contacts EHL problem between a tapered roller and raceway in tapered roller bearings. Converged solutions are obtained for moderate load and material parameters using a finite difference method with non-uniform grids and the Newton-Raphson method. The contours and sectional plots of pressure distribution and film shape are compared. The pressure distribution and film shapes near both ends of the roller are very different from those in the central part and are transversely asymmetric. The maximum pressure and absolute minimum film thickness always occur at the small end of the roller.
