It is in its infancy to use bacteria as a novel biotechnology for leaching precious and heavy metals from raw materials. The objective of this study was to investigate biogeochemical processes of iron leaching from magnetite reduction by iron-reducing bacteria isolated from intertidal flat sediments, southwestern part of Korea. Microbial leaching experiments were performed using commercial magnetite, Aldrich magnetite, in well-defined mediums with and without bacteria. Water soluble Fe production was determined by ICP analysis of bioleached samples in comparison to uninoculated controls, and the resulting precipitated solids were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The extent of iron leaching from magnetite in the aerobic conditions (Fe = 107 ppm) was higher than that in the anaerobic environments (Fe = 94 ppm). In the anaerobic conditions, Fe(III) in commercial magnetite was also reduced to Fe(II), but no secondary mineral phases were observed. Amorphous iron oxides formed in the medium under aerobic conditions where there was sufficient supply of oxygen from the atmosphere. SEM observation suggests that the reduction process involves dissolution-precipitation mechanisms as opposed to solid state conversion of magnetite to amorphous iron oxides. The ability of bacteria to leach soluble iron and precipitate amorphous iron oxides from crystalline magnetite could have significant implications for biogeochemical processes in sediments where Fe(III) in magnetite plays an important role in the largest pool of electron acceptor as well as the tool as a novel biotechnology for leaching precious and heavy metals from raw materials.

An ordinary paddy variety Hwaseong and a high-yielding variety Samgang were taken under investigation to test the effect of top dressing of newly formulated three compound fertilizers on rice plants for at sprouting heads. The fertilizer formulate used were C. F. I (14-0-14; $NO_3-N$ and $NH_4-N$) and C. F. II (14-0-14; $NH_4-N$ only) and C. F. III (14-0-14 + OM 10%; $NO_3-N$ and $NH_4-N$). A field experiment was conducted on a plot of Gyuam series. The following results were obtained: 1. Effects of compound fertilizers at sprouting heads a. Hwaseong variety exhibited 5-10% yielding increases on the plots with application of 2nd compound fertilizer (I) and (II) compared to straight fertilizer of (I) and (III). Fertilization with 2nd and 3rd compound fertilizers gave the best result when they are done 15 days before heading. A yield increase of 3-5% was achieved when the fertilization was done 20 days before heading in the case of Samgang variety, but no beneficial effect was observed with an application 10 days before heading. b. Rate of barren grains was at the minimum in the compound fertilizer (II) plots of both Hwaseong and Samgang varieties. c. Content of $NO_3-N$ in soils and grain yield appeared to be positively correlated($r=0.618^*$) 2. Effects of heading fertilizers on artificially reduced conditions of soil a. No significant difference in Eh values were measured among reduced paddy soils. The compound fertilizer of (II) presented the best result in yield increases regardless of rice variety. b. Rate of barren grains in both varieties was observed at the minimum on the application of compound fertilizer of (II). c. No great difference of mineral contents was detected among plants from different treatments.
A gene for cellulolytic xylanase of Bacillus circulnns ATCC21365 was cloned on pUC 19 in Eschwichia coli. The recombinant plasniid pXLI80 contained an 1.8 id, inselt composed of0.5 kb and 1.3 kb PslI fragments derived from B, circulans. The 0.5 kh fragment in the upstream region of 1.3 kb one was confirmed lo be indispensable for not only expression but also hyperexpression of the cloned gene. The transformant overproduced the xylanase 135 times greater than that produced by the orlginal B circulnns. The optimum pH and temperature of the cloned enzyme we]-e pH 5.2 and $60^{\circ}C$, respectively. Heal pretl-eatment at TEX>$55^{\circ}C$C for 1 Indid not cause inhibition of the activity of this enzyme. The elm.ynie could hydl-olyre CMC and lichenan as well as xylan to produce xylose(or GI), xylohiose(or G2) and xylolnose(or G3) as inah products. Hence We defined the cloned enzyme as a cellulolytic xylanase. The SDS-PAG electrophoretic mobility and zyiiogram of this enzyme derived from whole cell extracts or c~~lture supematants or E. coli(pXL180) indicated a molecular weight of 45,000 and nonprocessing of the enzyme in the peilplasln of E. coli.
The existing methods to analyze the heterogeneous porous media based on the similar media concept are the microscopic Miller similitude(MiS), the macroscopic Miller similitude(MaS) and the Warrick similitude(WS). The inter-relationship is found such that MiS ⊂ MaS ⊂ (⊂:subset). The proposed method is based ont eh assumption that the scale variables $\alpha$=w and the moisture content is dimensionless by introducing the effective degree of saturation instead of the degree of saturation into WS. The method, without the loss of generality in view of the inspectional analysis, can explain the heterogeneity of the media by using the scale variable $\alpha$ only. The media of $\alpha$=1 (average of $\alpha$) means the equivalent media corresponding to the heterogeneous media, while the standard deviation of $\alpha$ may explain the degree of the heterogeneity of the media under consideration. The hydraulic conductivity of the media with $\alpha$>1 is greater than that of the equivalent media, and the effective moisture content of the media with $\alpha$>1 is also greater. Based on these properties of the scale variable $\alpha$, the ideal vertical one-dimensional heterogeneous porous media is generated by using the technique of random number generation.
Major ions and nitrogen isotopic analyses were performed to determine the geochemical characters and to identify the source of nitrate of the shallow groundwater around agricultural field in the Youngdong area. The pH value of groundwater ranges from 60. to 8.2 (pH 7.2, mean). The average of EC, Eh and DO is 369 ${\mu}S/cm$ (70~729 ${\mu}S/cm$), 165.6 mV (29~383.2 mV), 4.3 mg/L (1.8~8.0 mg/L) respectively. The ion concentraion of groundwater was in the order of $Ca^{2+}$>$Na^{2+}$>$Mg^{2+}$>$K^{2+}$ and ${HCO_3}^-$>${NO_3}^-$>${SO_4}^{2-}$>$Cl^-$>$F^-$. Most of groundwater is Ca-$HCO_3$ type. The groundwater was affected by water-rock interaction in the shallow depth. Some groundwater is Ca-Cl or Na-$HCO_3$ (2.5%) type that was due to agricultural activities. The $NO_3$_N concetration of grondwater range from 10.2 mg/l to 26.9 mg/l, which show that this area is under nitrate pollution. ${\delta}^{15}N-NO_3$ value of the groundwater is the origins of are a combination of animal wastes and man-made fertilizers.

This study was investigated occurrence and distribution patterns of UV filters in Nakdong River basin (mainstream, tributaries and sewage treatment plant (STP) effluents). 5 (EHS, BP-3, 4-MBC, BZC and EHMC) out of 7 UV filters were detected in 5 out of 20 sampling sites (mainstream and tributaries), 7 UV filters were not detected in mainstream samples, and the EHS, BP-3, 4-MBC, BZC and EHMC concentration levels in tributary samples were ND~60.8 ng/L, ND~72.1 ng/L, ND~57.2 ng/L, ND~60.1 ng/L and ND~85.2 ng/L, respectively. 5 (EHS, BP-3, 4-MBC, BZC and EHMC) out of 7 UV filters were detected in effluents of 11 STPs around the Nakdong River basin. The EHS, BP-3, 4-MBC, BZC and EHMC concentration levels in 11 STP effluents were ND~89.3 ng/L, ND~90.8 ng/L, ND~88.1 ng/L, ND~118.5 ng/L and ND~104.4 ng/L, respectively. According to the sampling season, distribution patterns and detected concentrations of 5 UV filters were similar in June and September 2014, but change ranges of distribution patterns and detected concentrations of 5 UV filters were highly variable in April and November 2014.
Rice cultivation in paddy field affects the global balance of methane ($CH_4$) as a key greenhouse gas. To evaluate a potential use of by-product gypsum fertilizer (BGF) in reducing $CH_4$ emission from paddy soil, $CH_4$ fluxes from a paddy soil applied with BGF different levels (0, 2, 4 and $8Mg\;ha^{-1}$) were investigated by closed-chamber method during rice cultivation period. $CH_4$ flux significantly decreased (p<0.05) with increasing level of BGF application. $8Mg\;ha^{-1}$ of BGF addition in soil reduced $CH_4$ flux by 60.6% compared to control. Decreased soil redox potential (Eh) resulted in increasing $CH_4$ emission through a $CO_2$ reduction reaction. The concentrations of dissolved calcium (Ca) and sulfate ion (${SO_4}^{2-}$) in soil pore water were significantly increased as the application rate of BGF increased and showed negatively correlations with $CH_4$ flux. Decreased $CH_4$ flux with BGF application implied that ${SO_4}^{2-}$ ion led to decreases in electron availability for methanogen and precipitation reaction of Ca ion with inorganic carbon including carbonate and bicarbonate as a source of $CH_4$ formation under anoxic condition. BGF application also increased rice grain yield by 16% at $8Mg\;ha^{-1}$ of BGF addition. Therefore, our results suggest that BGF application can be a good soil management practice to reduce $CH_4$ emission from paddy soil and to increase rice yield.
Fully cholesteryloxycarbonated and (8-cholesteryloxycarbonyl) heptanoated disaccharide derivatives were synthesized by reacting cellobiose, maltose, and lactose with cholesteryl chloroformate or 8- cholesteryloxycarbonylheptanoyl chloride, and their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were investigated. All the cholesteryloxycarbonated derivatives (CH1DSs) formed enantiotropic cholesteric phases, whereas all the (8-cholesteryloxycarbonyl) heptanoated derivatives (CH8DSs) exhibited monotropic cholesteric phases with left-handed helicoidal structures whose optical pitches (${\lambda}m's$) decrease with increasing temperature. All the CH1DSs, contrast with the CH8DSs, did not display reflection colors over the full cholesteric range, suggesting that the helicoidal twisting power of the cholesteryl group highly depends on the length of the spacer joining the cholesteryl group to the disaccharide chain. The thermal stability and degree of order in the mesophase and the temperature dependence of the ${\lambda}m$ observed for EH8DSs were entirely different from those reported for the cholesterol-bearing dimers and triplet and the (8-cholesteryloxycarbonyl) heptanoated polysaccharide derivatives. The results were discussed in terms of the difference in the number of the mesogenic units per mole of repeating unit and the flexibility of the main chain.
In order to examine the efficacy of concurrent vaccination with live and killed Newcastle disease(ND) vaccines two types of each live($B_1$ and LaSota) and killed(gel and oil) vaccines of all commercial origin were administered either alone or simultaneously to day-old broiler chicks having maternal antibody. Live vaccines were given by conjuntival instillation in volumes of 25${\mu}\ell$ containing $10^{6.0}$ to $10^{6.3}$ median embroy infective dose(EH)) while killed vaccines were given in 0.3$m\ell$ volumes subcutaneously at the back of the neck Hemagglutination inhibition(HI) antibodies were determined at weekly intervals until 8 weeks of age and protection rate was determined at 4 and 8 week of age by challenge inoculation with virulent ND virus(NDV). During the 8 weeks experimental period concurrent administration of live and oil vaccine produced the highest level of HI antibody and the most satisfactory protection, whereas concurrent rent vaccination with live and gel vaccine induced poor immune responses. There was no noticeable difference in the efficacy between the live vaccines, Bl and LaSota when simultaneously administered with oil vaccine. Except for oil vaccine, single administration of either live or killed vaccine at day-old produced less than 50% protection at 4 and 8 weeks postvaccination(PV). Oil vaucine alone induced 80% and 70% protection at 4 and 8 week PV, respectively. Concurrent vaccination caused on visible side reaction like respiratory symptoms and did not negatively influence the growth rate of birds until the end of experiment.

I followed the results of Lee and Min(1996) for classification of the months of cold and warm winter. The winter of 1992 and 1984 recorded extraordinary cold and warm. Study of the Synoptic Climatology on the January's cold and warm winter is below: (1) Climatology's characteristic. Temperature of extremely high temperature month is higher compared with extremely low temperature month. Also precipitation is more than over low temperature month compared with extremely high temperature month. (2) In circulation of 500hPa surface. (1) Extremely high temperature month At 500hPa, negative geopotential height anomalies in high latitude, three trough developed over eastern Canada. In midlatitude, a deep trough persisted in the central North Pacific and conspicuous positive height anomalies showed over northwestern Europe, Where a blocking anticyclone developed. It had been warmer than normal since last year in Korea due mainly to positive height anomalies stretched from central Siberia (2) Extremely low temperature month Appeared the strong meridional circulation and negative height anomalies showed from Far East to the Mid-Pacific and appeared ridge in the west of the North America and Atlantic. Alutien Low shows negative deviation during 1984. In northern hemisphere shows negative deviation. Therefore, we can show that the surface pressure distribution and height distribution of 500hPa level are closely connected with each other as parts of general circulation. (3) The characteristics of the general circulation pattern of the 500hPa (1) Extremely high temperature month is high than extremely low temperature month1984 in Zonal index (2) The majority type is S type in 500hPa level circulation of extremely high temperature month but extremely high temperature month is M type (3) The wave number in 500hPa all shows 3 wave. So can not distinguished by only predominant wave number pattern.
