Effect of EGR Rate on Combustion and Emission Characteristics in a Single-cylinder Direct Injection Diesel Engine with Common-rail (직접분사식 커먼레일 단기통 디젤엔진에서 EGR율에 따른 연소 및 배기특성)

  • The purpose of this work is an experimental investigation of combustion and emission characteristics in DI diesel engine applied high EGR rate as a method of low-temperature combustion. In order to analyze the effect of EGR rate variation, a single-cylinder DI diesel engine was operated under various EGR rate conditions. In addition, injection timing was variously controlled to investigate the effect of injection timing in DI diesel engine using the cooled-EGR system. The NOx emissions were decreased in accordance with the increase of EGR rate. On the contrary, soot emissions were generally increased under applied EGR conditions. However, soot emissions were decreased in a few injection timings under high EGR rate conditions. The EGR results show that the ignition delay were increased by decreased oxygen concentrations in combustion chamber under the high EGR rate.

  • The direct injection (DI) diesel engine has become a prime candidate for future transportation needs because of its high thermal efficiency. However, nitrogen oxides (NOx) increase in the local high temperature regions and particulate matter (PM) increases in the diffusion flame region within diesel combustion. Therefore, the demand for developing hybrid system consist of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and aftertreatment system as well as diesel particulate filter (DPF) or lean NOx trap (LNT) should be applied. The variation of EGR rate due to the malfunction of EGR valve can affect not only the combustion stability of engine but also the performance of aftertreatment system. In this research, 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine was used to investigate the combustion and emission characteristics for various operating conditions with EGR. While the fuel consumption was increased with increase of EGR rate, NOx emission was improved by maximum 90% at low speed, low load operating condition. To achieve combustion stability and reliability of aftertrearment system with minimum penalty in fuel consumption and emissions, the fault diagnosis of EGR malfunction must be employed.

Genetic Association Study of the Common Genetic Variation of Early Growth Response 3 Gene With Bipolar Disorder in Korean Population (Early Growth Response 3 유전자와 양극성 장애 간 유전연합 연구)

  • Objectives The early growth response 3 (EGR3) gene located in chromosome 8p21.3 is one of the susceptibility loci in many psychiatric disorders. EGR3 gene plays critical roles in signal transduction in the brain, which is involved in neuronal plasticity, neuronal development, learning, memory, and circadian rhythms. Recent studies have suggested EGR3 as a potential susceptibility gene for bipolar disorder (BPD). However, this requires further replication with an independent sample set. Methods To investigate the genetic role of EGR3 in Korean patients, we genotyped six single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the chromosome region of EGR3 in 1076 Korean BPD patients and 773 healthy control subjects. Results Among the six examined SNPs of EGR3 (rs17088531, rs1996147, rs3750192, rs35201266, rs7009708, rs1008949), SNP rs35201266, rs7009708, rs1008949 showed a significant association with BPD (p = 0.0041 for rs35201266 and BPD2, p = 0.0074 for rs1008949 and BPD, p = 0.0052 for rs1008949 and BPD1), which withstand multiple testing correction. In addition, the 'G-C-C-C' and 'G-C-G-C' haplotypes of EGR3 were overrepresented in the patients with BPD (p = 0.0055, < 0.0001, respectively) and the 'G-T-G-C' haplotype of EGR3 was underrepresented in patients with BPD (p = 0.0040). Conclusions In summary, our study supports the association of EGR3 with BPD in Korean population sample, and EGR3 could be suggested as a compelling susceptibility gene in BPD.

  • The effect of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of exhaust gas emissions, and SFC are experimentally investigated by four-cylinder, four-cycle and direct injection marine diesel engine. In order to reduce the soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to intake system of the engines, a soot removal system of a cylinderical-type scrubber is specially designed and manufactured for the experimental system. (1) SFC is increased in downward convex curve style with increasing excess air ratio, it is increased with increasing EGR rate at the same excess air ratio. (2) NOx emission is reduced in downward convex curve style with increasing excess air ratio, it is reduced with increasing EGR rate at the same excess air ratio. (3) Soot emission is decreased in downward convex curve style with increasing excess air ratio, it is reduced with increasing EGR rate at the same excess air ratio. (4) CO emission is increased in nearly straight line style with increasing excess air ratio, it is increased with increasing EGR rate at the same excess air ratio. (5) HC emission is not constant tendency with increasing excess air ratio, it is increased with increasing EGR rate at the same excess air ratio.

Early Growth Response-1 Plays a Non-redundant Role in the Differentiation of B Cells into Plasma Cells

  • Early growth response (Egr)-1 is a $Cys_2-His_2-type$ zincfinger transcription factor. It has been shown to induce survival and proliferation of immature and mature B cells, respectively, but its role in the differentiation of B cells into plasma cells remains unclear. To examine the effects of Egr-1 deficiency on the activation of B cells, naive B cells from $Egr1^{-/-}$mice and their wild-type (WT) littermates were activated to proliferate and differentiate, and then assayed by FACS. Proportions of cells undergoing proliferation and apoptosis did not differ between $Egr1^{-/-}$ and WT mice. However, $Egr1^{-/-}$ B cells gave rise to fewer plasma cells than WT B cells. Consistently, $Egr1^{-/-}$ mice produced significantly lower titer of antigen-specific IgG than their WT littermates upon immunization. Our results demonstrate that Egr-1 participates in the differentiation program of B cells into plasma cells, while it is dispensable for the proliferation and survival of mature B cells.

  • EGR(Exhaust gas recirculation) provides an important contribution in achieving the development targets of low fuel consumption and low exhaust emission levels on gasoline engine for hybrid vehicles while allowing stoichiometric fuelling to be retained for applications using the three-way catalysts. However, the occurrence of excessive cyclic variation with high EGR normally prevents substantial fuel economy improvements from being achieved in practice. Therefore, the optimum EGR rate in gasoline engine for hybrid vehicles should be carefully determined in order to achieve low fuel consumption and low exhaust emission. In this study, 2 liters gasoline engine with E-EGR system was used to investigate the effects of EGR with optimum EGR rate on fuel economy, combustion stability, engine performance and exhaust emissions. As the engine load becomes higher, the optimum EGR rate tends to increase. The increase in engine load and reduction in engine speed make the fuel consumption better. The fuel consumption was improved by maximum 5.5% at low speed, high load operating condition. As the simulated EGR variation on a cylinder is increased, due to the increase in cyclic variation, the fuel consumption and emissions characteristics were deteriorated simultaneously. To achieve combustion stability without a penalty in fuel consumption and emissions, the cylinder-to-cylinder variations must be maintained under 10%.

Early Growth Response 1 Induces Epithelial-to-mesenchymal Transition via Snail (Egr-1-Snail 작용에 의한 epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition 유도)

  • The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays an essential role in embryogenesis and is involved in tumor metastasis and invasion; it significantly contributes to tumor progression and aggressiveness. The EMT is characterized by a loss of epithelial cell polarity as a result of the reduced expression of epithelial E-cadherin, a hallmark of the EMT, and the acquisition of mesenchymal-like cell morphology. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as $O_2{^-}$, $H_2O_2$, and $OH^-$ have been demonstrated to induce the EMT; although Snail is involved in ROS-induced EMT by transcriptionally repressing E-cadherin, its mechanism is not fully understood. In this study, we examined the effects of early growth response 1 (Egr-1) overexpression in noninvasive breast tumor cell line MCF-7 cells. Upon Egr-1 overexpression, MCF-7 cells lost epithelial cell polarity and became more spindle-shaped, indicating that Egr-1 may induce EMT. We found that Snail is implicated in Egr-1 induced EMT. We further demonstrate that the Egr-1-Snail axis is activated by ROS and plays a critical role(s) in ROS-induced EMT.

Factor Analysis on Exhaust Gas Emissions of Small DI Diesel Engine (직접분사식 소형 디젤엔진의 배기배출물에 대한 인자분석적 고찰)

  • This study analyzed the effect of four control factors, RPM, load, EGR rate and cooling water temperature on the exhaust emissions of the small DI diesel engine. The amount of NOx and smoke emissions were measured through experiments for three levels of four control factors according to orthogonal array table, and the effect of four factors on NOx and smoke emissions was analyzed quantitatively. The main results obtained in this study are summarized as follows: 1. RPM, load and EGR rate have a great influence on NOx and smoke emissions, and the effect of cooling water temperature is negligible. 2. As RPM and load increases NOx emission increases and decreases sharply as the EGR rate increases. 3. Smoke emission decreases or increases randomly according to RPM and load, but increases sharply in proportion to the EGR rate. 4. EGR rate has the greatest effect on NOx and smoke emissions by more than 60% of contribution to variance, especially in the case of NOx emission, EGR rate represents a significant result even under the confidence level of 99% on ANOVA.

  • The static and dynamic behaviour of VGT and EGR systems has a significant impact on overall engine performance, fuel economy and exhaust emissions. This is because they define the state and composition of the air charge entering the engine. This work focused on the effect of the aperture ratio of VGT and EGR on the emission and flow characteristics under partial loads conditions. The investigation carried out using 2 liter PCCI 4 cylinder diesel engine with VGT and EGR. The result of this study shows that smoke increases with increasing EGR rate and NOx decreases with increasing EGR rate. It was also found that the residual gas contents greatly impact on soot emission under partial load condition. Finally, it can be concluded that VGT and EGR aperture ratio can greatly impact not only on soot and NOx but also air charging.

Effect of EGR Rate and Injection Timing on the Characteristics of Exhaust Emissions in Light-duty Diesel Engine (Cooled EGR 시스템의 EGR률과 연료분사시기가 소형 디젤엔진의 배기 배출물 특성에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Cooled EGR system is widely used to reduce NOx emissions in diesel engine. But when EGR rate was increased, combustion stability was worsened and PM level was increased. So determining optimized control point of EGR rate is important. In order to determine this point, it is important to figure out the effect of EGR system on the exhaust emissions. In this research, NOx and PM emissions were analyzed with various coolant temperature supplied to the EGR cooler at several positions such as downstream of turbocharger, upstream and downstream of DPF. Effects of some variables such as EGR rate, hot / cooled EGR and change of injection timing were estimated. And $CO_2$ emissions were measured at exhaust and intake manifold to calculate EGR rate at each engine operating condition. Also combustion analysis was performed in each engine operating conditions. In the result of this study, there was trade-off between NOx emissions and PM emissions. When EGR rate was increased, combustion pressure was decreased and COV of IMEP was increased.
